This is my first travelogue to this forum. Please be open to share your suggestion.

My heartiest courtesy to ADC and BlackPearl for such detailed travelogue which helped me to plan my trip.

I have visited many places and closely interacted with the localities. What I have always felt is that a well blend of people, food, scenic beauty and cozy weather together makes the place perfect to release accumulated dearth of pleasure in our daily routine. However, Arunachal is a place which has taken me aback by its natural beauty, with picturesque valleys and charming lakes alone. It is truly a place to rejuvenate and reinvigorate your senses, and fill in fresh air within. The colourful flowers and greenery seems to entice me to take a break from the hustles and bustles of our life. The valleys in the isolated and barren lands give us peace equivalent to meditation and sooth the eyes, tired of staring at the laptop screen day after day, with its colorful bushes.



Let me reminisce a little, and relive those wonderful days.

2nd October, 2015, a national holiday, being on a Friday, and 12th October Mahalaya, a state holiday, being the next Monday, we were allured to compile weekends and some planned leaves, and design a trip plan for 11 days. We had already learnt a lot about the icy mountains and tedious roads of Western Arunachal from friends who have already made road trips to the place; hence we made a list of essentials accordingly. Our Bolero was stuffed with all car utility to avoid any halt owing to manageable breakdowns. As for ourselves, we were ready with cooking utensils, cereals, packed victuals, a small gas stove, water, a large umbrella, solar light, medical kit, clothing, etc.





Permissions:

The requisite permission known as ILP (Inner Line Permit) was obtained from Arunachal Bhawan situated in Salt Lake, Kolkata well in advance. No separate permission is required for vehicle in Arunachal, and the permission to visit Bumla has to be obtained once you reach Tawang in Arunachal. Obtaining an ILP is very simple as you need to submit a photo copy of a Voter Id Card, duly attested by a gazette officer and two passport size color photographs. The cost of the form is INR 10.00 and permission charge is INR 40.00 for a total of 6 people.



The permission for Bumla is needed to be obtained from the DC office. After getting the permission from DC, the set of documents has to be submitted to the Brigadier of Tawang to complete the total process of permit. Usually, the DC office collects the permission forms after 10:00 AM and delivers the permit at around 3:30 PM. The Brigadier issues the permit after 8:00 PM if the documents are submitted by 6:00 PM. You can collect the final permit on the same day after 8:00 PM or next day in between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM.




Day 0 and Day 1 (October 1st and 2nd 2015) Kolkata - > Alipurduar

We started at 8:30 PM to avoid local traffic at daytime, and driving for a long stretch is easier for driver and car both. We had a plan to transverse through NH34 to reach Dalkhola. Meanwhile, a friend who travelled the same route the earlier day advises us to not take NH-34 till Behrampore, as the traffic on the road is very uncertain. Hence, the last minute decision was to reach Farakka via Bolepore-Kuli, and to make this possible, we had to travel an extra 60 KM. While crossing Bolpore, we had to cross a tunnel and we got stuck at the entrance point as numerous trucks were passing by from the opposite bay. A Bolero pickup driver , who was behind us, came to our aid, and guided us across the tunnel as our giant dared to roar at a monster and forced it to stop and give way.

Farakka


While we reached Farakka it was already dawn, and so had to face traffic jam till Dalkhola. The road condition was so bad, that there were number of truck breakdowns on the way, which added to our miseries. Local commuters (TATA Magic) carried the passengers half way, and left them as they could not reach their destination because of the pot-holes created on the road.







Finally, after crossing all these hurdles, we reached Dalkhola at 12:30 PM. We took a long break, had our lunch and then started off for Siliguri at 2:00 PM.
On our way, we decided to go beyond Siliguri as we had nothing to do there, and moving ahead would help us to make up for the time we had lost owing to the road condition and the bad traffic we faced that day. We took the bypass at Siliguri towards Alipurduar, and reached there at 9:30 PM. It was late enough, and we all were tired after travelling for 25 hours and 790 KM. We freshened up, had a quick dinner and hit the bed for a deep sleep.

Day 2 (October 3rd 2015) Alipurduar -> Bhalukpong

The next day looked forward to yet another long journey, as we targeted to enter Bhalukpong. The total distance to be travelled was around 500 KM. We left at 8:00 AM; the day was sunny and was delightful to travel. On our way, we stopped at a bridge to glance at the river brimming with water, and making way towards small hills. Though it was a highway with good road conditions, the driver had to be ever alert as he may face another vehicle coming from the opposite direction in the same lane. The people out there are too casual to obey the highway norms, and crossed the roads as they felt like. Apart from this there is nothing much to say about this day. We reached Tejpur at around 5:30 PM.

We were not sure whether we would be allowed to enter Bhalukpong after 6:30 PM. So we called up some of the local travel agents to ascertain the same. A friendly travel agent confirmed over phone that we can enter Bhalukpong after 6:00 PM if we had the ILP. Hearing this, we were overjoyed, and stopped for a tea break at Tejpur. Few local people warned us that the way beyond Tejpur is completely a forest area and is of high risk. They also advised us to pass through the forest in group of busses. However, we could not find any bus on the way to accompany us. We sat hooked to our seats, being fully alert, staring at the road, and keeping our GPS aligned to mark the curves in advance to minimize the risk.
I was continually glancing over the rear view mirrors to check if any unwanted vehicle was following us. We drove to cover the 50 KM lonely road in just 45 minutes.

At Bhalukpong check gate, we took a breath of relief. We were asked to produce the ILP and vehicle papers there. After the checking was over, we asked the officer if we could go to Tippi. He advised us to rather stay back at Bhalukpong, as all the hotels and market places were situated therein. As Tippi was only 5 km away we decided to explore the place. Tippi was not that interesting, and neither was there any good place to stay. So, we had to drive back to search for a hotel at Bhalukpong. At the outskirts, we saw hotel (Hotel Salu) which seemed decent enough, and hence we checked in.
The ambiance of the hotel was good with small huts built in the open space. There was a river flowing adjacent to the hotel, after climbing down the stairs, where we sat to admire the moon at night. In this hotel we also tried a local dish ‘Chicken boiled with bamboo shoots’ which had a pungent smell but was good to taste.

Day 3 (October 4th 2015) Bhalukpong -> Bomdila -> Dirang


The last two days were mainly the travelling section of the trip. After spending a wonderful night at Bhalukpong, we wanted to enjoy the beauty of Arunachal. So, we started early in the morning to capture that beauty on the go, in our camera. Just as we left the hotel, we were guided to visit the Orchid garden nearby.

Unfortunately, the main yard was closed for the day. However, we could glance at the orchids from a distance. Next, we moved ahead for a few miles, and were stunned by the presence of Kans grass (kash phul) blossoming on the banks of Kameng River. The presence of the river, surrounded by the Kans grass, gave the valley a new look indicating the onset of the Puja season. We admired the place for some time and captured the memories in camera.








Moving ahead for some more odd miles, we saw a hanging bridge at Gelling on the same river. We could see the river originating from the hills here, and splashing over the rocks in the urge to move ahead.

Our next break was at Bomdila, where we stopped to visit the Bomdila Monastery, one of the most prominent centres of the Lamaistic faith of Mahayana Buddhism. The monastery is situated at an elevated height from where one can relish the view of the wide valley of Bomdila. The monastery was being renovated at the moment. As the monastery was situated on top of the hill, there was an open space with provision to have tea under an umbrella. One can enjoy the sunset with a cup of tea or coffee sitting there, viewing the colourful valley of Bomdila. There was another monastery above the Bomdila monastery, but the monks said that the roads are too rough, and we’d have to trek to reach there. Hence we aborted the plan, as we were already hungry and time for lunch was getting over. I will try to upload a video of our Bolero, climbing the hill to reach the Bomdila monastery.

Day 3 continued ...

From there, we stepped down and took the road towards Dirang. About 2-3 KM ahead of Dirang, we saw the Nyingmapa Monastery and decided to pay a visit. This is the place from where one can see the river Dirang flowing across the valley serving as a source of life for the people. The city of Dirang, also seen as patches of cultivation, could be easily identified from the monastery. The children of the monastery wandered all around enjoying the evening by playing over the cart, practising some football kick and running with friends. Girls spent time taking care of their siblings. There was a butter lamp temple which was locked but we peeped inside and saw hundreds of lamps filled with butter. Each and every monastery in Arunachal has a butter lamp temple where hundreds of lamps are lightened to pay homage to Lord Budhdhha.

Nyingmapa Monastery - Dirang

Dirang is a beautiful hill station in west Kameng district beside Dirang Chu. Dirang is a pleasant place to enjoy the apple and kiwifruit orchards. As we spent a long time in the monastery, we were already late, and it was dark. Hence, we decided to search for a hotel and we also had a plan for a picnic in the back of our mind. We checked in to the hotel (Hotel Snow Lion), where the owner was humble enough to allow us to use the parking area for cooking. We cooked our dinner beneath the roof of sparkling starts and the day finished gazing at the clear dark glittering sky.

Day 4 (October 5th 2015) Dirang -> Sela Pass -> Jaswant Garh -> Tawang

The next day, we started off for Tawang. This was the last destination in Arunachal where we were going to stay. The altitude is 10,000 ft., hence, we anticipated it to be quite cold there. Around 25 KM from Dirang, we stopped to enjoy the spectacle of the colourful valley of Arunachal. The blue sky, the meandering roads and the villages in the green valleys were a feast for the eyes. There was a bit of snow too on some of the mountains.

As we were approaching Sela Pass, the percentage of vegetation was decreasing and we could see the trees with almost no leaves standing at ‘attention mode’.

Day 4 continued ...

Sela Pass is the most popular pass in Arunachal, the appropriately pronunciation of which is SE LA, where ‘SE’ means mountain and ‘LA’ means pass. Sela Pass is actually the start of Tawang district at an altitude of 13,680 ft. At Sela Pass, we took some rest at the army cafeteria for a while. From there, when we moved ahead to look at Sela Lake, we could not believe at what we saw. The water was crystal clear, and because of the reflection of the blue sky, it appeared as if the lake is filled with blue water. The mountains surrounded the lake as if to safeguard it.We expected it to snow at Sela Pass, but fortunately or unfortunately this time we had a sunny day to enjoy the beauty.

























It is said that Sela Pass has 101 lakes around it. We visited some of them. The most famous one is the Sela Lake which is also called as Paradise Lake because of its exotic beauty. As we moved further upwards, we could see ice covered peaks which is my wife’s personal favourite. Traveling further ahead, we reached Jaswant Garh built in the memory of Jaswant Singh, who served as a brave soldier in 1962 Nuranag battle. Jaswant Garh is a religious place for the soldiers, as the place provides them courage to face challenges. After having hot coffee at Jaswant Garh we moved towards Nuranang Falls.






















Nuranang was a local lady who had helped Jaswant Singh during the war of 1962. In her honor, the fall was given the name Nuranang. Around a few KMs from there, we saw a place full of flowers. The colorful flowers hooked us to the place.

Day 4 continued ...

While leaving Dirang, we had enough spare time in hand, and hence, we decided to drive casually halting at places with picturesque beauty; and this provision made us tread towards an unknown destination by just following a sign board, which indicated towards a hot spring. No distance was maintained, but there was only one road. The place was quite isolated, and hence we could hardly find anyone to check with. In search of the hot spring, we reached a village with very thin population. The most attractive part of the village was the meandering fire path covered with sweet colourful flowers in both sides and green vegetation. I have no words to describe our delight visiting the place. The picture of the place will explain more than words. We wondered who had planted so many flowers all around. The countable houses were all locked and it seemed that people have gone out for work. The fire path was only enough for one bolero to pass at a time. We got down to have a closer look at the flowers and breathe in the breezy air within.

I am not sure whether this place was mentioned or not by anyone who had visited Arunachal earlier, it is a must visit during spring. To visit this place, you need to take a left turn from Kitpi and drive for 10 KM. Kitpi is around 10-12 KM before Tawang on your way to Tawang freom Sela Pass. However, we could not find out the hot spring, and so decided to return to the road leading to Tawng.










It was already late as we reached Tawang. It was getting dark, and hence it was required that we search for a hotel soon. The roads within the city are very steep, so it is required to apply the extra skill of driving and get the booster work at the right time. We checked in to a hotel and decided to have the dinner early as the market closes at 8:00 PM. After dinner, we went to the roof of the hotel to take some pictures of the Tawang valley and Tawang monastery. This was all for that day as we had had to give some time to our visuals to settle down in our memories.

Day 5 (6th Oct 2015) Tawang -> PTSO Lake -> Y Junction -> Tawang War Memorial -> Tawang

Tawang is a town situated at an elevation of approximately 3,048 meters (10,000 ft). The town once served as the district headquarters of West Kameng district, and became the district headquarters of Tawang district when it was formed from West Kameng. It is also the get way to most of the places of utmost relevance. One has to stay in Tawang to cover Bumla, Sangetsar Lake and Zimithang/Zemithang. Also, the requisite permission for Bumla is obtained from Tawang. In Tawang, the must visit places are the Tawang Monastery, Ani Gompa, War Memorial and Urgelling Monastery. Tawang monastery is the largest monastery in India and was built in association with the fifth Dalai Lama. The monastery is visible from all places of the city, and is lighted up at night. Tawang monastery was given the name “Galden Namgay Lhatse” meaning “Celestial Paradise on a clear night”, as the white building of the monastery shines at night when there’s a clear sky.

We paid visit to the D.C. office early in the morning, to get the permissions for Bumla. We waited for the officer to arrive, and filled the forms in the meantime. The permission is obtained in the afternoon the same day within 4:30 PM. And the same has to be submitted to the Tawang Brigadier at War memorial to obtain the signature and the military clearance. For other places apart from Bumla, no permission is required and the permission granted is valid for a single day. We submitted the forms and left to visit Sangetsar Lake, as the tourist vehicle drivers said that we can visit the lake and return within 4-5 hours. The owner of the hotel had earlier mentioned that there are numerous splendid lakes on the way to Bumla. Sangetsar Lake and Bumla have a common road till Y junction, and at Y junction, one way goes to Bumla and the other goes to Sangetsar Lake, where Sangetsar lake being nearer than Bumla. We travelled uphill along the beautiful curves and steep roads. On the way, we encountered a number of not so renowned small lakes. However, these could not be ignored as it will grasp your attention with their glittering water. The day being sunny, it added to the glamour of the lakes, making them shine like diamonds. Just a few kilometers before Y junction we came across a lake named as PTSO Lake. Being a bigger one, this lake has found a name for itself. We thought of spending time at this lake while returning from Sangetsar Lake. We moved ahead and reached Y Junction where there was a military cafeteria to comfort the tourists going to Bumla or Sangetsar Lake. We refreshed ourselves here, with some Momos and Pakoras.

Y junction is at a height of 14615 feet and hence one can estimate that the level of oxygen was quite low, as a result of which, my wife and a friend started suffocating. We have learn in our North Sikkim trip that camphor can help with normal breathing at a higher altitude. Though we did not have camphor with us but the army officials tried their level best to comfort us and offered us medicines. Conditions stabilized after a while. Still, I decided to abandon the idea of going to Sangetsar Lake. After spending almost 1 and ½ hour at Y junction we decided to return, and spend some time at PTSO Lake.

Day 5 continued ...

The lake had been decorated with small huts and a bridge over the lake, to give the tourists a feel of picnic spot, though the artificial structures have led the people litter the place, as the locals find this place a favourite one to hangout for drinks and snacks. The breeze of the place was pleasing and we decided to have a small picnic with pasta and coffee. We took out our small cooking arrangement and food was ready in no time.

After having the food, we walked down the lake to witness the clearness of the water. The bed of the lake was clearly visible covered with algae and bushes. Thereafter, we moved back towards Tawang as we had to collect our permission by 4:30 PM.

On our way back, we also stopped for a while at a small lake which appeared to be religious as it was surrounded with flags; and the reflection of the flags on the clear water made it look more in enchanting and holy. We reached the DC office well in time, but had to wait as the DC was out for some work, and his signature was pending. At 5:00 PM we moved to War Memorial to submit the 2nd set of documents for military clearance.

Day 5 continued ...

We were asked to come at 8:00 PM the same day or at 6 AM next morning. We thought of spending some time in War Memorial so that we could collect the permission and return to the hotel. The War Memorial is one of the most famous places in Tawang which is built in remembrance of the 1962 war, and is the office of the Tawang Brigadier. We bought some souvenirs from there. Meanwhile, we were accompanied by an army officer who helped us to live some of the moments of the 1962 war with China through statues, models, pictures, rifles and documentaries. The names of the heroes of the war who fought with bravery were carved in golden letters at the walls of the main dome. There was also a light and sound program which we were asked to watch. It was an interesting show and we learn a lot about the history of Tawang.





























After the show, we had almost one more hour to spare. So, we decided to have our dinner and come back to collect the permission. Near our hotel, there was a good restaurant named ‘Woodland’ where we tried some local delicacies. After having our dinner I dropped my wife and my friend’s wife back in the hotel and went with my friend to collect the permission.

Day 6 (7th October 2015) Tawang -> Bumla -> Tak-Tsang Gompa -> Sangetsar Lake -> Tawang Monastery -> Ani Gompa -> Tawang



Morning at Tawang.

The plan for the next day was to visit the two most famous sites of Arunachal – the Bumla & Sangetsar lakes. From four we were down to three people going out for the day, as considering the health hazards of my friend’s wife we decided to allow her to take rest at the hotel. This time as we were going on the same way for the second time we knew the lakes that we will come across. We decided to take our first break at Y junction. It was chilling cold on the morning as there was a clear sky and the freezing breeze was gushing in all directions. We stopped at Y Junction to have our breakfast with Momo and Coffee. Then we moved towards Bumla which is the border area between Indian and China. We could see spikes of ice on the way where water has frozen while tripping from the hills.

The white path on the barren land welcomed us and we felt like being honoured to visit a place of such importance. This place is a symbol of peace and friendship between the two countries. There is a symbolic rock of peace indicating the end of the border. We were accompanied by a military officer who provided us various facts about the place. We could see the radar centre of China which was shining like a white dome. We also saw the friendship hall where celebrations take place between the officials of both the countries. Bumla is the highest point in Arunachal that we planned to cover. Bumla is one of those places which were intruded by the Chinese army during the Tawang War of 1962.

Day 6 continued ...


Returning from Bumla



On our way back, we could see the mountains covered with bright color bushes as if a painter has randomly stroked the brush on the mountains with different paints. We could not resist ourselves from stopping at small blue lakes in the midst of the mountains. There were some army men who were traveling uphill and downhill and hence we provided them lift in our vehicle. One of the officers invited us in his camp and hence we got to see a wonderful lake at its back. The snow covered peek was clearly visible which made the site a memorable one. A hoarding can well define the beauty of the place which says “We do not see nature with our eyes, but with our feelings and our hearts”.




























The hills appeared as a black giants, protecting the lakes as their beloveds, in their arms. From Bumla, we made our way to Sangetsar Lake via Y Junction. As we could see Sangetsar Lake nearby, we decided to move on the same road a few KM ahead to see Tak-Tsang Gompa as indicated by sign-board. The Sangetsar Lake looked beautiful from the way to Gompa as we could see the whole valley underneath.

Day 6 continued ...

Sangetsar Lake was created by falling rocks, boulders and trees in an earth quake. The trees are still standing dipped in three feet of water. This gives the Sangetsar Lake a unique scenic beauty of its kind. It is situated in the midst of hills, and in winter the water turns into hard ice. The bridges and sheds are erected for tourist attraction, but it is not lucrative for people looking for serene beauty. We had some food in the restaurant present there, and spent a long time sitting by the lake. Probably I will visit the places once again to see all the lakes covered with snow, as Sangetsar Lake has a unique beauty in winter.

Day 6 continued ...

From there, we came back to Tawang, to take our friend, who was sitting in the hotel, along with us to visit Tawang Monastery. Tawang Monastery has a museum attached to it, which shows the various stages of evolution of Tawang and its people. It also has a school to preach their religion.

From there, we decided to go to Ani Gompa (The ladies Gompa) as we had never seen nuns earlier. They welcomed us to their prayer hall wholeheartedly and we witnessed their custom of worship. It was almost dusk when we were returning, and so we decided to have some snacks and return to hotel.


















While having snacks we were analyzing the feasibility of visiting Zemithang next day. We investigated number of articles and trip logs and learn that this place has nothing interesting to see apart from large rock houses and the green valleys. However as we may not get a chance to visit Zemithang in future, we decided to go there so that we do not regret later.

Day 7(8th October 2015) Tawang -> Lumla -> Zemithang -> Tawang





Need a wash

Zemithang: It’s about 90 KM away from Tawang and would take 4 hours to reach. All of us started early, as we had plan to return before dusk. Zemithang is a valley area with a river flowing across it and having a small village with very thin population on either side of the river. The waterfall on the way which was of moderate interest. Apart from this there is a big structure ‘Gorsam Chorten’ which is completely isolated. Another small Gompa could be seen at a climbing height from there, hidden in one of the curves of the hill.

We were dying of hunger but there was no place to have food. We had almost finished all the packed food which we were carrying with us. If you do not have enough time to explore less attractive places from Tawang then my suggestion is not to plan for Zemithang. There were very few people in Zemithang and I have checked with everyone if there were any attractive places to visit, but no one could suggest us any.

Day 7 continued ...

I had a plan to return to Tawang early, and spend some more time at Tawang Monastery as we had missed the Museum the earlier day. On one of the curves of the road we encountered a huge military truck stuck at the middle of the turning because of a mechanical breakdown.





We were worried of the time which would be wasted waiting there, although the officials consoled us saying that the truck will be repaired within a few minutes. These were just some words of sympathy, as we soon realised that they would take enough time to repair it. We had a good option at that moment to utilize this time for another day of jungle picnic. We were ready with noodle packets, coffee and our gas stove. In no time, the awesome food was ready, and we relaxed and relished the weather with steaming hot coffee in hand.

















We forgot that we were annoyed as we had to wait there till the truck was being repaired, and just then two more vehicles lined behind us. One of them was of a foreigner couple who shared their experience of other parts of India which they have visited recently. We could not feel the time flying and meanwhile the truck had been repaired. As all the vehicles were heading towards Tawang and it was almost evening time, all of us ran following each other with utmost endeavor. We gushed behind the Bolero of the foreigners as we had a fear of losing our way in the dark. Fortunately, things went in accordance to the plan, and we entered Tawang by 7:00 PM.

After the day everyone was exhausted. We had a word with the owner of the, hotel and took the place at the terrace to prepare the dinner for the day. We kept the menu simple so that it could be completed at minimal time.
