Re: Backpacking around Darjeeling and getting a glimpse of the Kanchenjunga

There is certainly something about Darjeeling, as popular, cliched and crowded as it gets. It somehow retains that charm and beautiful feeling. I was lucky enough to spend nearly a month there while I was doing my Basic Mountaineering Course at HMI and while most memories of the main road there are of the cold, painful morning runs and exercises in the rain , overall I loved the place!

Might be anathema to post this on an auto enthusiast's forum, but the main reason Darjeeling retains some of its charm even today is because...the central part is closed to vehicles! (Also thinking about central Gangtok in Sikkim.) Sooner or later we must realize that for the best, central and most scenic spots to remain scenic, we need to preserve them as pedestrian spaces.
