I am from this region (Hubli to be precise). The thread makes me super homesick as I haven't been able to go home for over 3 years. The green moong you see is put up for drying and not for sale. It will be packed and sent to wholesale markets for sale after drying. This year, there have been excessive rains in this region and although there was a good moong crop, the rains have damaged the crop just before the harvest, significantly affecting the yield and quality. Generally speaking, moong is a fairly profitable quick first crop (70 day cycle).

Same Pinch, I am from Hubli, and Travel every week three States by Road (Telangana - Andra - KN and return) via various private, KSRTC, TSRTC, or APSRTC buses to balance profession and family life. I feel the KSRTC Airavata and Ambari are the best modes to travel long rides due to on-time schedules and safe travels.

This thread made me remember my hometown and surrounding rural areas and the authentic North KN rural flavor. Thanks for enlighting this region, which is not much explored in my favorite TeamBHP. Any post on north KN on this forum feels home to me. Lots of authentic rural food varieties, various kinds of people, every 50 Km you will find the change of speaking style. But the people over here are the same kind-hearted and always ready to help our guests.

Another train route to explore in this region is Bangalore - Davanagere - Kotturu - Hospete - Badami- Alamatti and Bijapur. YPR - BJP Express. (06545). You will experience the authentic KN countryside route as well as many natural scenic places / bigger dam views (both Tungabhadra & Krishna rivers), along this route.

This post remembers me of my previous Hyderbad - Hubli road condition update

Thanks for the post and expecting many more on this (MY) region.

I grew up in Bangalore all the way till college and so have always loved it. I'm moved to TN and have remained there all these years. This was my son's first tryst with the sambar and he hated it.

I enjoyed my food today, with a healthy serving of it.

Re: Karnataka Unplugged | An exhilarating experience

Beautiful travelogue. Interior and rural Karnataka especially during monsoons is a bliss to travel and experience nature, history, culture and food. After Kerala (obviously being a Keralite myself) the next state that I enjoy traveling the most, is through Karnataka purely due to the multitude of options it offers for an enthusiastic traveler. Somehow I find the experiences alluring and endearing to my traveler heart. There are some places where you realize the meaning of the term "wanderlust". In many places, it throws at you opportunities to step back in time. I will explore these places one by one and I will do it only by road.

Sir, let me first feel a bit jealous about you for all the memorable and savory time you had on the road. I can hardly get free time except my weekends.

Ranebennur is the correct usage.

I am sure there are more folks here from Hubli-Dharwad-Belgaum-Gadag region. One of these days we have to organize our own meet.

Processed, packed food versus all the fresh food you got to sample. Should be an easy guess as to which one wins this round.

There was time when catering was a big deal on railway platforms & trains. You tip the pantry chap and he made sure your meal arrived nice and hot. This is how I managed on those multi day train trips I used to do between Bombay and Cochin.

Rural Karnataka is indeed beautiful and a different experience for us blokes used to city life. My uncle lives in Kabakaputtur. Its been many years I've been there. Not that I used to frequent the town. When I did go, that was probably the only time I would not miss the lack of non vegetarian food. Cause the vegetarian meal was so good. Its simple food and easy on your stomach. A lot of the food prepared was rice based on steamed.

You don't need to go too far out to come across interesting names put beside a dish. There is a old bar and restaurant in Bangalore called Dolphins. A typical bar where you find men mostly sitting around a table. The lighting is low. Food is the last thing you'd expect to be good at a place like this but there are a few nice picks from the Menu. One of them is a dish called "Sudden Chicken". Its a semi dry chicken dish and perfect to go with your drink of choice. Super yum. The first time the waiter said this, I could not understand what he was saying so I was like, ok, get whatever. Off course, a tip was always generous which ensured that every time I went there with my friends, service will be a priority. On the other hand, there is every possibility of finding an insect in your food so approach with caution.

As always, a pleasure reading these trip reports.

Ya, Good Idea. I too read many posts from my region folks here. I was born and brought up in this region, and due to my profession moved to other cities.
To mark my identity/nativity I bought and registered my 2nd Car @ KA-25 and roam around Bangalore (KA), Hosur (TN), and Hyderabad (AP&TS) for my profession. I feel proud to say I am "hubbaliyava"

As you suggested let us plan and meet at Hubli/Belgaum in the coming months, even a night camping at one of the good resorts will be a good idea.
