Re: Bangalore - Tirunelveli: Back to my roots

@Ice - came across your travelogue today when I searched for Mundanthurai.Awesome travelogue, very well written !

I was looking for some information on how to visit (a safari possible ?) the Tiger reserve at Mundanthurai. What are the formalities and who/where do we need to get permission from ? Appreciate any information in this regard.

Re: Bangalore - Tirunelveli: Back to my roots

This seems to be interesting. Even I would love to visit this place. Can you shed some more information on how to get there and what formalities needs to be done to get an entry?

The best person would be at the forest office in ambasamudram. My grandfather has a cottage in the forest so I had it easy

Re: Bangalore - Tirunelveli: Back to my roots

ICE...an awesome write up and this reminds me of the trip we took in 2009 to this place. It is a travelers paradise for sure. The boat ride to the falls is something that still remains high on my must see places.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to read your full trip details - amazing !

I was told that I can stay either at Hotel Janakiram or Hotel Bharani.

Is this a new hotel that you are recommending?

Yes it's a new hotel. Slightly higher rates but a great place to return to after a tiring day tripping around the district.

I am unable to find a link for this hotel (Apple Tree) in the Net. Do you have one? Or, do you have their phone number?

Thanks.

Re: Bangalore - Tirunelveli: Back to my roots

Just chanced upon this thread. Amazing. Beautifully written too.
Being brought up in Kanyakumari district I can understand the aruvaal culture of TTK districts (Tirunelveli-Tuticorin-Kanyakumari)

Nice to know that a scion of the great Shankaralingam Iyer family is part of Team-bhp. It would be great if you can inspire your grandfather to write memoirs of his Tiger hunting days

Thank you very much. I never got down to finishing the thread, and the 3 and a half year gap has rendered my recall useless. That said, I am planning another trip in September, with all the accoutrements of this one (and more!). I will meld the report with this one.

Oh yes! You should visit the aruvaal market in Tenkasi for some fantastic examples. I picked up two aruvaals last year - one to protect the homestead, and the other to break open coconuts.

I am flattered by your comments - thank you! In fact, my grandfather is maintains a meticulous diary and files each letter that he has written or received. I am encouraging him to use these artifacts as the bedrock for a proper book highlighting the good ol' days. His English is deplorable, and his tamizh is coloquial at best, so he chose to write using the script of the former and the intonation of the letter. All very confusing.

ICE: I had a classmate from Mr. Shankarlingam's family. His name was Arun kumar. We did Chemical Engineering together at SRM Engg college, chennai. We lost touch after that. Are you guys related to each other?
