From Vandiperiyar it is 24km, not from kumily. You have to turn left if coming from Kumily at a junction called Kakki kavala.

Till Gavi any cars can go no issues. narrow roads, and some potholes.

Permission - Yes it is required theoretically.
You must be staying at the gavi eco resort, or you must be having a day programme with them for easy permits.

But some people just drive through with some arrangements.

I had taken the gavi route from Vandiperiyaar and exited through Angamoozhy to Pampa with my Civic in September 10. I had taken a guide from Gavi with me throughout the trip for access and safety. I have passed through heavily protected power projects area. Kakki Dam, Pampa Dam, Seethathode, plappally before reaching Pampa on the foothills of Sabarimala. I'll put up that details in my log sometimes. Advise not to take sedans, but if you are a serious driver nothing stops you.

Re: Gavi

There was a Malayalam movie called Ordinary that triggered a lot of interest in Gavi. Took 4 days off from rigorous office routine to spend a zero mobile network vacation with family.

The Gavi road trip is possible only by booking online via
https://gavikakkionline.com which opens 5 days in advance. You need to pay for entry and only 30 vehicles are permitted a day.

We started from Trivandrum late night and stayed at a place called Adoor. Reached the forest checkpost at Angamoozhy by 10am since they will not permit entry after 11am. Signed off some forms and headed out into the forest. We took some food along since were not sure of getting any on the way.

The roads were very well kept. Hardly had not more than 50 meters of rough patch overall.

The entire route is one-way for private vehicles and the only exception is for the KSEB ( Electricity board that has about 7 dams in the area) and Forest department vehicles. There is a KSEB canteen, the only one in the entire stretch, however we did not go there.

Exited Gavi after a very refreshing 5 hour drive. Unluckily did not get to see any wildlife.

The roads to Kumily and Marayoor were so very good.

Took a lot of roads less explored thanks to the mighty Thar

Happy to see the Thar!!

I am planning a trip from Pune to Kerala later this year and Gavi is one of the places on my itinerary.

I will really appreciate if you can guide me on the following:

1. I plan to spend the night before at Alleppey and reach Gavi in the morning. The distance as per Gmaps (from Alleppey to Gavi) is around 5 hours. And then I wish to spend couple of nights at Gavi.

Is this 5 hour journey possible - leaving Alleppey at around 4 am - in time to gain access to Gavi (cut-off is 11 am I believe)?

2. What is the best route you would suggest (Alleppey to Gavi)?

3. Stay options at Gavi - KFDC is first choice but getting accommodation there seems to be a task. Are there alternatives which are close to the reserve - like homestays, AB&B, et al?

4. I plan to continue my journey to Thekadi and then to Munnar from Gavi - is that a possibility or should I plan it in any other way?

5. Anything else that you might want to advise on or suggest.

I am driving a Thar (D, MT) and I will be coming from Pune, MH covering Bangalore and Khozikode before heading to Alleppey and Gavi.

Thanks.

Re: Gavi

Thanks for sharing the experience. I did Gavi trip in 2017 with my friends. We booked the Govt cottages which was pleasantly neat and clean. We started in Innova from Bangalore, stayed in Thekkady for the night and started to Gavi next day. At that time we need to collect the permits in a office once you cross Thekkady. Looks like this is automated now and we can collect the permits online. The route was awesome and we didn't face any issue in reaching Gavi. This thread is motivating me again to do this trip.

Re: Gavi

I suggest you drive from Alleppey by 5 to reach Angamoozhy checkpost at 9. Please book online at https://gavikakkionline.com/ couple of days ahead. There are no restaurants or stopover along the way so please carry water, bread etc. There is only a KTDC place to stay but i do not have a clue on how good it is. The exit point of the trip will be Vandiperiyaar and from there you can reach Thekkady. You can then go to Munnar from Thekkay.
