Truly Tranquil! Tirthan valley.

For quite some time, I'd been wanting to visit the Tirthan Valley about which I'd read so many great things about. I realized that all of them are true during my 2N/3D stay in the truly beautiful landscape. Add to that the fact that it's just 10 hours out from Noida with a nice drive over the excellent NH1 & NH21, makes it a wonderful journey to an ideal destination.

In our stay in there, we spent blissful times; sitting along the wild river enjoying the roar of the gushing water, racing a fishtailing car over steep inclines with plentiful mud slush, playing with snow, gorging on yummy Himachali cuisine and just basking in the glory of pristine mother nature. It was PERFECT!

I'll now let the pictures do the talking before the detailed travelogue!

Tirthan Ahoy!

The drive to the valley was a breeze and pretty uneventful. Our initial plan was to stay at Raju Bharti's homestay, but while I was browsing online, I'd came across a place called River Side Resorts and it's picture gallery had made me finalize it as our stay in the valley. It turned out to be an excellent decision as on getting there, we instantly loved the place. For
getting to it, there were 2 options;

cross the river on a manual, open-top cable car (one person at a time with luggage),

or
drive the car over a sturdy wooden planks bridge, park it in an opening by the village and walk down to the resort.

Wifey took the first option with me doing the second. Saw this spooky tree along the way, it reminded me of the Womping Willow from Harry Potter!

On reaching the resort, the first thing that struck us was the view & the roar of the river. The view was charming and the roar was loud.

The people running the place were very courteous and nice. Soon we're checked into our room wherein we dumped our luggage and headed straightaway to the river side. Here, sitting on the boulders, wifey sipped on a nice cup of tea and I popped open coupla bottles of chilled beer while we both enjoyed some steaming maggi & aloo paranthas. It was PERFECT! After the short siesta, it was time to click some snaps.

Soon darkness crept in, and now it was time for some long exposure shots. Out came the camera, the tripod, but gosh I forgot to get the remote shutter release. I don't know why I always overlook bringing one thing or the other. High time now that I start making a packing list! So blown were the chances of any night shots, and hence out came the bottle of good ol' rum. We perched ourselves on the balcony enjoying a conversation with warming beverages and spicy chicken to go along. In the fading light I thought about trying to capture some low light shots.

In the darkness, we saw a white Safari stop on the road across the river and soon we're joined by Tanveer & family, who coincidentally were staying at the same place. Actually they're our next door neighbors. So it was decided that we all will dine together and catch up on some travel stories. In the meantime, wifey & I enjoyed a bonfire.

Post dinner, I told wifey about the plans for the next day, which largely involved going to the Jalori Pass to have fun in the snow. Soon she turned in for the night, while I spent sometime listening to music on my iPod dock before my eyelids threatened to shut down anytime soon and it was time to doze off...

Day 2: Snow, nice people & hot hot hot food!

The plan for the day was to head up to Jalori Jot and have some fun in the snow.

We took our time getting up and ready and around 11 we left the resort to go to Jalori pass. We'd planned to stop at Shingri Vatika along the way to order lunch which we're to have on our return from the pass. On getting to the Vatika, and checking out the place & the menu, we decided to have some snacks before proceeding further. It again turned out to be a good decision cause I had crispy chicken pakoras with a spicy green chutney while wifey enjoyed yummy paranthas. We told the very nice couple running the place what we'll have for lunch and set out towards Jalori.

After some distance, we could see snow on the peaks and also on the mountains in front of us. I have seen barren mountains covered with snow earlier, but now we had lush green slopes with snow amongst the trees. It was such a fantastic sight.

Soon there was snow along side the road and the amount of mud slush started increasing. Driving over the steep incline and through those deep patches of slush, I stepped on the gas could feel the car fishtailing.

Truly Tranquil! Tirthan valley.-dsc07512.jpg

I felt pretty excited taking those curves while constantly checking not to let the car swerve too much. We'd met Tanveer while going uphill (he was coming down), and he'd told us that there's too much snow at the pass making the trek to Sarloskar lake impossible. So we decided not to go all the way to the top and stopped some distance from it. From here we decided to take a short walk, clicking snaps along the way.

Playing with snow can make you scream!

Truly Tranquil! Tirthan valley.-dsc07463.jpg

After about half an hour, we decided to head back to Shingri Vatika and have lunch.
