Leh & Ladakh bitten by Scorpio {from July22-july28,2010}

well the planning was haywire, 3 fellow bankers roped me in after 6-7 days of persistent mobile calls,at times 3 of them calling me up in tandem,I was still uncertain about the tour as I was planning the tour with tents,hiking gear & cooking equipment of my own, But then it rained cats & dogs on the 21st in Jalandhar,& may be the overcast sky challenged me into it,their wasn't a call from any of the 3 enthusiast,that rainy day,this was the time I called them all & told them that we were leaving tomorrow morning.
DAY-1 I drove all the way to shimla to pick up my dear pal, sid & then drove all the way to manali.All of us slept like logs in a hotel at manali but saini saab was the 1st to doze off, slept in the same room with sid & me{ a peculiarly designed room with 4 beds & a curtain} , his high pitched snores kept us awake the whole night.
DAY-2 we left manali at 7 am on the morning of 23rd their was a road blockade at rohtang , reached baralacha-la at 6 pm & rented a tent near sarchu where 5 of us ate & slept.
DAY-3 on the morning of 24th all the diesel vehicles refused to start up, we pushed hard at each others vehicles so as to make them start. after a lot of hard work some of the mahindras & safari's roared, all the guys then shook hands & bid adieu. the rest of the vehicles were toed along, to make them start.after sarchu I drove to pang an {army encampment}, then drove the moon scaped lands that were stretched beyond the eyes can see, 130 kms before leh the roads turned up real good & i sped away , reached leh at around 7 pm.all the pics till day 3 are posted below:-

Wow, its one more to Leh-Ladakh. The snaps are good. Whats the equipment you were using for shooting? I hope to see lots of pics of the beast and see some report on the performance of the vehicle. BTW whats that place where the scorpio is parked with other vehicles? Some rest area?

I dont think the last pic is from Day3. It looks more from the Sakti side of ChangLa. Am I right?

Look at the following pic and compare!!!

Day-4 we started late for khardungla at around 11 am , the dearth of oxygen was quite evident in the low pull in the 1st & 2nd gears, all had a cup of breathe easy tea at khardungla { provided free by the indian army} their i made friends with,mike,an american guy who was crazy{just see him doing a hand stand at khardungla}he left off for nubra valley .we had no plans to stay at nubra, but we went there anyway,reached hunder at 4.30 pm , clicked a few pics with the bacterian camels & soon we were on our way back at 5 pm ,His holiness the dalai lama was too in the vicinity, that day,at diskit monastry.while i drove back to leh ,their were guys in the back seat cracking jokes at me,& were distracting me, soon i found a way out, the more i pressed on the accelerator the more silent they grew, hahahaha, reached leh at 8 pm , where all had a nice dinner & slept like logs. the pics posted below are from day-4

No wonder as we flew in to Leh on the 23rd and started our sight seeing on the 24th. I guess you went to Nubra on the 24th, right?

We went to Nubra on the 27th and returned back on the 28th. 27th July was the day when HH Dalai Lama's visit at Deskit finished and all the people were returning back to their homes. The amount of vehicles we crossed was amazing.

The camera used for the nubra drive was nikon d-40 SLR, just after returning from leh i drove my punto diesel to chandigarh from jalandhar,i reached chandigarh in a jiffy,driving was never this much fun, i feel driving beyond khardungla is a honor of sorts.

That was a nice and crisp TL with great photographs. Can a person like me, who is mostly a city driver with occasional short trips to local site seeing places all on flat land, be able to negotiate the mountain roads of ladakh? Thanks again for a great TL. Cheers

well you have to be brave , with all those gorges in the backdrop ,at all times, on steeper climbs you'll have to keep the momentum going as 1st & 2nd gears hardy pull ,amidst the dearth of oxygen 3rd gear is more reliable.the roads are bad & get worse at certain points.

That looks like a V engine from Honda. What's the model any idea? I like the way you respect the religion
