Day 3: Minicoy continued...

After tender coconuts and a stroll near the SPORTS admin office, we were briefed the activities planned for the day
  1. We would be dropped near a resort which is on the NORTH-WEST side of the Island, where one could do Kayak, swimming, snorkelling and spend time in leisure if required.
  2. We would be picked at 1:30PM from resort back to SPORTS Admin office for lunch.
  3. Post lunch visit through village and to Baemedu.
  4. By 4:30 to 5:00 PM we would be dropped back near Jetti to board the ship again and sail to Kadmat.

Remember our ship was to take a detour to pick passengers from Kalpeni and Chetlat and hence next day would be all in the ship sailing.

After this briefing we were dropped near the resort, journey to resort was through the narrow roads of Minicoy, they are all well laid roads.

Resort was situated to the end of the island and had a beautiful view of the lagoon. It’s one heck of an experience, seeing blue water all around was an amazing feeling one needs to feel. I don’t have words to express. Everyone started to enjoy, few picked Kayaks, few were just swimming and few were just lying lazy in water. We kept admiring this place

We spent some time swimming and playing in water and then decided to finish snorkeling. Went straight to resort admin, with limited equipment even they were ready to start first come first serve basis, so off we go.

We were handed life jackets and snorkeling kit, it’s nothing but a pair of glasses and a kit to breathe through mouth.

snorkeling kit

Three Friends & A Trip to ISLANDS-reefexploreradultsnorkelingkit.jpg

One needs to walk around 300mts to reach the coral reef, just a practice for few mins as glasses blocks nose completely and one needs to ensure breathing through mouth constantly. Water would be shallow and one can stand the entire reef are, but need to be cautious where you step

Guide would glide us through the waters and would let us know whether we can touch or not, not all are safe to touch. And off we go for snorkeling. Ideally its 20min/person since we were the early birds and didn’t have any competition we were allowed for an amazing 1hr, after around 30mins he allowed us to do on our own. We were damn tired at the end but the experience, the coral reefs kept us inspiring to continue. It’s an experience of life time, I was missing my daughter a lot, she loves Finding Nemo, would have been on cloud 9 to see clown fish live in action and all the reefs which she keeps asking me while watching. Though I guess the right age for kids to enjoy this destination and snorkeling would above 10.

I wish I had sports kit to take underwater snaps, underwater camera were on sale in the resort for a whooping amount of 3k.
Few pointers for Snorkeling:
  • Kit should not cost much, for next visit I would have my own kit. This way you can enjoy the beauty as long as you wish.
  • Sports kit for underwater photography would add spice to it or buy the camera in case you wish to take some underwater snaps.
  • Be relaxed, no need to hurry. Once tired one has a tendency to stand but believe me the beauty underneath are very sharp and they pierce like hell. So just float when tired.
  • When doing alone, never touch anything as not all are safe to touch, just watch and admire

After reaching to resort, we did a bit of lazy kayaking and some walking along the shore. SPORTS management made facilities for

> Lemonade, was very refreshing
> Fresh water bathing facilities, they provided soaps, dry towels and tender coconut in case on required (instead of Lemonade).

Every one were then transferred back to Admin office for nice lunch. On the menu were

> Chicken curry
> Panner Butter masala
> Dal Tadka
> Channa masala
> Sambar
> Fried rice
> White rice
> Pickle
> Papad
> Kheer

It's was best way to spend a day, after such a lunch I was more inclined to sleep for a while facing sea. It was a paradise.

Next in the list was a visit to village, to be continued...

Hi Nandan,

Thanks

Package that I took doesn't provide a stay on resort, we need to be back in ship by EOD. Unfortunately I don't have pics of resort in Minicoy.

Cheers

Day 3: Visit to ‘baemedu’

Post lunch we were taken to visit the village and Baemedu (Village house), drop point was some 500 mts away from the house. As per the guide, it's the oldest house on the island.

We walked through narrow lanes side the shore to reach this house, where we see a big boat (used for race) and group of ladies waiting for us. They greeted us and then started serving

> Masala wada
> Sweet bun
> Coffee/tea

While munching we were exploring the place.

A Visit to Minicoy Lighthouse was told to us on the ship, but this was skipped due to restriction put by Navy as renovation work was going on.

From here we were dropped back at Jetti to board the boats. We were back in our ship by 5:30 PM. Took nice hot water bath, cup of Lemon tea and spent rest of the time rewinding things happened through out the day. After a nice dinner, we hit the beds as we were tired.

Next day there's nothing to do other than just sailing, Day4 is nothing but sailing all the day and few glimpses of Islands.

Expenses on Minicoy:

200 INR for the Snorkeling guide as token of appreciation (they never asked)
60 INR for tender coconut which we consumed apart from the complimentary ones.

End of Minicoy, Day4&5 To be continued...

Great Travel log dude. So many nice pictures. The dirt in the sensor is pronounced in so many pictures. Hope you will clean it up before the next trip.

Did you get any Kerala special Dishes on the ship? Like "Karimeen pollichathu", Kappa (tapioca) etc.

Thanks SG,

Yes they did serve us Karimeen,

I wished to get it cleaned prior to trip but couldn't manage to reach the Nikon Service centre. I did on my own, but again water and dust accumulated during the journey.

I need to get it cleaned to the earliest.

Great pics! I just returned from Nile Cruise (i am posting pics on my Egypt Travelogue) and when I compare these two things they are so different.

About snorkelling : You need a good equipment. Use and throw underwater camers are available at around 1.5k for 36 shots.

Nice thread with great detail. Never before have I read so much about Lakshwadweep. This thread is motivating me to plan a trip.

Being on TBHP has so many advantages you see, so many travelogues, interesting places from east to west to south to north. Ofcourse all the great gyan from the petrol heads about the wheels.

Btw, Raghu230506, is it safe to take an entire family (wife, children, parents) on the trip? I mean on the ship and stay on the islands.
