Road Trip Report: Bangalore – Kalyandurg

Recently, I had to travel to Kalyandurg (Small town in AP) from Bangalore.
I travelled through 2 Different routes (Onward and return).
1. Onward Route: Bangalore – Penukonda – Mamillapalli (NH 7 until now) --- Kanaganapalli -- Togarakunta – Nutimadugu – Kalyandurg.
Distance: 244 Kms (frm Google).
Toll: Rs 55 oneway.

Road condition: Bangalore to Mamillapalli Superb NH7. Mamillapalli to Kanaganapalli (Good); Togarakunta to Nutimadugu (OK at some places and some places it is bad; with potholes). Nutimadugu to Kalyandurg (Superb ; smooth and newly laid.) From Mammillapalli to Kalyandurg it is single lane road . But speeds should be less than 80 kmph.
Please note there are no Petrol Bunks until Kalyandurg from NH7 Deviation. Even villages are also remote; and at some crossroads there are no road signs.
2. Return Route: Kalyandurg – Pavagada – Penukonda – Bangalore.
Distance: 237 kms Frm Google.
Toll: Rs 55 return (at bagepalli).

Road condition:
Kalyandurg to Pavagada: Superb until Karnataka Border. After karnatak border for distance of 5 – 7 kms. Road is not good to pavagada.
Pavagada to Penukonda: Ok. But bad at some places.
Penukonda to Bangalore. Superb NH7.
Kalyandurg to Penukonda: Single lane road.
No Petrol Bunks until Pavagada. And until Penukonda.
Scenery is OK. But I don’t know about Kalyandurg – Pavagada – Madiksara – Hindupur – Bangalore. Supposed to be shortest at 213 kms. I heard that Hindupur to Bangalore road is not in good condition.

Re: Road Trip Report: Bangalore – Kalyandurg

navrddy - Is Kalyandurg your native place? I hail from Dharmavaram. Good to see some 'local' travelogue. I traveled almost every weekend for 4-5 years, from Bangalore to Dharmavaram (Right turn at Nagasamudram Gate).
Is the NH-7 by-pass at Penukonda town is completed? When I visited couple of years back it was still under construction.
Keep the pics rolling & thanks for sharing.
I visited my relatives once at Kalyandurg in 1984.

Hello idlebrain,

kalyandurg is not my native place.
NH7 Bypass at Penukonda is completed.
But if you take Penukonda bypass; then u will miss Penukonda - Pavagada road. Since Penugonda - Pavagada route goes from inside of penukonda.

Unfortunately, i dont have any pics

Maybe;i will fit dashcam in my car. so that it can take pics at regular intervals of every 30 mins.

Would it not have been a better idea to go to Challakere from Pavagada, then take the super state highway to Hiriyur and come on NH4 thereafter via Tumkur?

I have not been on the Pavagada-Challakere road for some time now, but that is a so-so road, narrow but not in bad condition. Lonely at night, not much traffic even by day. From Challakere, you join the excellent SH coming from Bellary and merging with NH4 at Hiriyur south of Chitradurga.

I have no idea about the Madhugiri route in its entirely, but I have been on the Tumkur-Madhugiri stretch and I found it narrow and not an exciting road to drive on. Neither scenic nor fast.
