Hello children,

I've got myself a Hyundai verna CRDi. Well, it takes 5 weeks to deliver.

It's going to be my daily to work car, with a driver almost 80% of the time. I do not intend to change the stock wheels.

Ride comfort is of great importance to me, more than performance. It's a company car and i will be driven to work everyday.

The original tyres are Bridgestone 165. Thats all I know, v1p3r tells me he thinks they are 165/14/70. I also know that if you take the hyundai alloy wheels they offer 175 tyres.

Now the only thing I intend to do, to the otherwise stock verna is change the tyres for some nice tubeless better tyres.
(The other thing will be to put a half decent audio system, i may not need advice with that)

So gentlemen, I request your advice on a tyre upsize, without changing the wheels and a brand and model.
I like the Michelin Certis, have ridden them on an earlier car. C3PO tells me Yokohama tyres will be good too and tells me Federal aren't that good.
So if i can have some opinions, I would be very obliged.

firstly, i'm guessing the red car is staying (?)

secondly, have no experience with then brands you have mentioned, but the bridgestone gIII s are great, have them on my ikon.

Sam, I don't think Michelin makes the Certis anymore. Now their comfort range is called Energy XM. Highly recommended! Sightly costlier than others, but these tyres are really good! And you get 4 years warranty as against 3 year warranty from the others (not that warranty means anything as far as tyres are concerned).

Sam the stock size for the CRDi is 175/70 R14 so based on that & you wanting to keep the stock rims which I am assuming is 5.5J sized, here are the upgrade options:

185/65 R14 (Standard on the top-of-the line petrol model)
195/60 R14
205/60 R14

I would personally recommend the 195 or 205 sizes since both are good upgrades & won't compromise your ride comfort also. As for tyres since Ride Comfort is top priority you should go in for Michelin Energy XM1's. Great tyre, good ride & minimal road noise, don't go for Certis's as they have a known problem with sidewall bulges.

Also will check the wheel size tomorrow & confirm once again to you.

ishan wont the 205 s be overdoing it, we're talking 14" wheels bro.
185/65 would be perfect keeping in mind your priority is comfort.

195's should be perfectly fine, no problems there. I'm planning to get the same size on my stock rims too which are the same size as the Verna's.

Not really I've seen people put 205's on stock Accent 13" rims!! But in the Verna's case the 205 is also a good option since the difference in OD of 175 & 205 is only 0.17% & also 205's can be mounted on 5.5J size rims.

But I guess for his use 195's would be perfect, not to mention they would look nice too!

Congratulations. My suggestion put 195/60/14 Yokohoma ES100 tyres. They are very silent and offer superb road grip in all conditions.

Congrats on your purchase.

I would recommend the 195/60-14 bridgestone turanza ER-60. These are indian made bridgestones and they have a sidewall protector against stones. I have fitted this exact same tyres on my lancer and found that this had the least noise at the same time offering good grip and ride.

They come with a 4 year replacement warranty.

The michelin Energy XM1 are repplacement to the certis. They are good tyres but have had a few problems since they are of a softer compound rubber.

The best size would be 195/60-14 for the verna.

I second that ,the ES 100 is really good,and looks stunning too.If you're into 'brands' as such then it's the michelin energy XM1 for you.But if you're going in for michelin you might as well stick to 185/65/R14

Assuming stock size of 175/70R14 on 5.5J wheels.



205/60 R14: GC will increase by 0.5mm, speedo error 0.5%, would be a good upgrade. Check whether wheel well has enough room though.
195/60 R14: GC will decrease by 5.5mm, speedo error 1.8%, reduction in GC is a concern.
185/65 R14: GC will decrease by 2.3mm, speedo error 0.7%, would be a good upgrade.

In other words, 205/60 has the widest sidewall, best for comfort, and best looks. It also has the least speedo error, it also has the best grip. Only downside would be increased road contact, which means less FE and car should be powerful enough to compensate for increased road resistance, and wheel well should be big. I think verna CRDi has the power to handle the 205 tyres.

Sam, go for the 205/60R14 if it fits the wheel well. And I recommend Yokohama ES100, I have it on my Baleno and it does have great looks and performance.

The tyre on the right is Yokohama.

I would suggest the michelin energy XM1 , very silent , excellent ride and holds well on both dry and wet surfaces , I would think the 185/65/r14 should suffice..

I back on Bridgestone GIII , EV100 Yoko's arent bad either . Both provide some outstanding levels of grip .....which is very much needed for Verna , Just waiting to hear from you about her handling after your tyre change and I recommend 205,60profile tyre..(14")
