My experience with MRF wanderer:

The grip is good but not as good as the Yokos. Ride is slightly on the harder side compared to a Yoko.
The sidewall is slightly better than the Yoko for sure(thicker) but the tread design leading to the sidewall does nothing to prevent cuts, etc.
The tire life(in terms of tread wear) is surely better than the Yoko, probably due to harder compound.

My Wanderer sidewall has developed cracks in 20k kms with very little offroad use. Note: cracks are not due to impact and are clearly due to manufacturing defect.

Devil and the deep sea. Both suck. neither the MRF not the Yoko is cheap. I will compare the Mrf with the Apollo AT instead. Yoko sidewall is just plain hopeless. Im thinking of replacing with continentals or maybe go for the cheapest AT tire in the market because honestly, from most of the reviews ive read, the tires are highly overrated for indian conditions. They may be good elsewhere in the world.. Yoko's should try offroad testing for their sidewalls in Bombay city potholed roads.

I have just decided to try something different for an Estate use Scorpio.
I know they are low on street cred but they are cheaper and have good reviews in Aus and SA. Nankang FT7 A/T OWL.
They are really new and I dont have comments as yet.

Common point in the feedback about the Yoko's is the softer side-walls. After reading Samurai's posts about the off-roading experiences with the Yoko's, Jay's experieces about damaged tyres even on highways comes like a contradiction, and is not helping things.

So what are the options ? Driving does not involve off-roading.

Should I retain the BS Dueller's as one of the options as replacement for the OE Duellers ? My OE set have done 75k now, with enough tread for another 25k. Just that they are Aug 2005 vintage now.

@Condor dont go by the looks can you post the picture of tire wear indicator area? Also old tyres are not a good idea for highways and for that matter for suspension coz they become hard and transmit lot of unwanted shocks to the system.

Even I am on the lookout for a good AT tyre for my Safari, currently I have shortlisted Yokohama Geolandars and the Continental Cross Contact, I am somehow inclined towards the Contis, but would love to buy the Michelin LTX AT if made available, my Safari has done 68k kms on the Michelins and the tyre guys say I can easily run another 10k kms on them.

Here's a side by side comparision of the tread and shoulder of the Continental and the Geolandar.



The Continental seems to have a harder sidewall and the shoulder too is vertical compared to the tapered shoulder of the Geolandar. I love the rugged looking tread too, but it could prove noisy.

Checked the tyres: 1.5-2.5 mm at the Tread wear indicator points.

Condor, Yokos gives you more confidence on highway driving/high speeds/braking. If you just do highway and normal village roads, it should do.

So wanted to get Wanderer but seems I will have to wait for more review now. Crack's @ 20k!

Wonder why people have been complaining about the Yoko sidewalls ? Just 2 days back I just drove into a paddy field and then from there on for 8kms thru non existent roads riddled with medium sized stones and yet to see something drastic. Touche Touche !!

Not that I do this on a daily basis, but yes once a month for sure .

If you dint know, no one simply drives into a sugarcane field right after the harvest that would be the dumbest thing to do . They usually call for the tractor and these dude's are also pretty careful about running the tractor through it. Only after the stumps have gone dry, do they use the plough attachment and get into the fields.

Out of curiosity which sugarcane fields do you drive through on a daily basis ?

Why do you think I even suggested sugar-cane ?
(Paddy fields ! The other sections you mentioned would have been more challenging than the paddy fields)

On a recent trip to UP another Yoko casualty to report. Left rear went flat at about 140kph. I could sense a wobble and stopped in time to save the tire from complete damage.
Discovered the sidewall had cut approx 1" starting from the end of the tread footprint.. this was on proper highway use. Its quite disgusting. This is my 3rd Yoko casualty. Left with no option i am now using it with a tube inside though i hate to do so.

By the way, i saw some brand new chinese brand tire selling for 5200Rs. Tread looked good. But the tire felt as soft as a cycle tire.

I feel like trying out Apollos or Continentals now. Yoko, and Mrf have failed me.
