Just bought Yokohama A539 for my Alto LXi.

The tyre spec: 165/60 R12

Why this :

• I loved the pattern and price was good for a 165 though this isn't the correct upsize for Alto as per tyre experts.
• I thought the tyre would look wider,as I was going 2 size up in terms of width ( stock is 145/80 R12).
• Also, thought this was a wiser buy if I get alloys in future (4.5J x12).

Other options: Bridgestone ER60 145/80 and Michelin 155/70 R12

Price: Rs. 2050/tyre for Yokohama A539 and 2200/tyre for Michelin.

Experience Yoko:

I am yet to explore the capabilities of the tyre but initial experience was very good. Maybe the tyre I had was too old and bald and hence the ride now feel more comfortable. Also, when you pass over small potholes, the thud sound is better muffled.

Will update more later after I do more drive.

Good choice! The Yoko A539 seems to grip really well in the wet and the dry.

And there will not be any issue with 165/60 R12 for alto :)

Looks good Jk.. I did a google on the A539 and many are of the opinion that these are not good wet tyres but are great in the dry.
What say our resident tyre experts?

Well, I've read the other way around as well. A lot of people say this is very good in the wet.

In any case, I plan on getting a set of 185/60 R13 for the Santro.

How much for 225/45R17?

Any idea about the road noise?

jk good choice of tires there, any specific reason as to why you stuck to a stock upgrade than alloys.

The price difference is pretty minimum between a 12" and the 13". Also any idea if there are 100 PCD stock rims from another car which would fit the Alto ? The Santro is 100 PCD and stock rim is 13", am planning to try the same on the Alto at home. What do you'll think ?

Googled Yoko A539 to find three random links talking about the wet handling of these tyres. I don't have any other first/second hand info regarding the grip level of these tyres.

Sankar, another thing you need to remember is the fact that many of those guys are comparing the A539 to other tyres which we have never heard of in India!

See it in the Indian context. What are your options? Almost nothing in wierd sizes like 185/60 R13, 165/60 R12, etc... Only the GIII comes to mind. I would much prefer a Yoko A 539 to the GIII.

Great buy, JK. I have them on my Santro 175/60/13. These tyres are the best in this size. Very grippy and lower noise too.! I had GIII's before and the steering felt noticeably lighter after switching to yokos !

Google finds ( which am yet to check) had doubts about A539's capablity on WET roads! Well, I am happy on what it could do on an Alto's muscle power. Period.


I did. It's grippy and yes, noise is less. Does the job neat.

A539 :thumbs up money well spend!

I love the thread design, all you need is to color those rims white now! Do update after few 100 kms, that will give you a good idea. I have feeling it will be really good.

About a year back when I was in dilemma over which tyre to choose for Xing, Nikhil, aZa, kpzen and JK were of great help in finalizing A539 in 175/60 R13. I've covered about 9500 kms with these grippy tyres till date and they've been on all sorts of roads, well metalled as well as rural un-metalled streches. They've endured big pot-holes at high speeds and high speed cornering isn't an issue with them. The grip is simply superb, whether wet or dry surface, one is sure of being planted on the road.

These tyres can be little noisy sometimes but they're less noisy as compared to the Aceleres on my i20 (I think my view of Aceleres is on the contrary to the major opinion). Moreover I get 28psi filled in order to have a comfortable ride against the recommended 30psi. I once got 29psi Nitrogen filled and to my shock the pressure reached as high as 34psi over time; I've switched over to normal Air now.

Have been using the A539's on my santro and i have done 35k kms in the past two yrs. The size is 175/60 R13. The tyres have been taken through all kind of terrain and put to a lot of abuse (though allignment,balancing and rotation is always done on time). The tyrewala says these will easily go on for another 15k kms without any problem.

Jus love the wet grip of these tyres and the pattern. The best available in 12 and 13 inches.

GIII were good tyres, i had em on my SS80 and did a lot to improve the handling and braking in dry and wet.

So i have another choice in A539 when i upgrade the tyres :)
