There is a drive of vintage and classic cars on 1st of May 2013 from Nariman Point to Godhbundar Road, Thane.

THE VINTAGE REGISTER

THE FIRST ACTIVITY IN ITS REVIVAL

A simple drive, not a competition in any way whatsoever, is being organised starting from Nariman Point at 7.30 a.m. on Tuesday, 1st May, 2013 and ending in Thane. The cars are to assemble at Nariman Point at 7 a.m. The activity is being conducted jointly with the Heritage Vintage Owners Club in Thane who will be looking after all the activities in Thane itself

The route will be:- Nariman Point – Marine Drive – Chowpatty - turn right at Babulnath – Peddar Road – Worli – Century Bazar – Portuguese Church – Tilak Bridge – Priyadarshini – along Eastern Express Highway to Thane – turn left to go to Godhbunder Road. The activity is at the Hypercity Mall at Kasarvawali just beyond Manpada on Godhbunder Road.

The annual exhibition of old cars is to start at 9 a.m. This means that our drive must leave Nariman Point at 7.30 a.m. to reach comfortably. The parking area of this mall is extremely large and the cars will be lined up for an exhibition which will conclude in the afternoon. Refreshments will be served as soon as you arrive and there will be some more activities organised.

Those of you who would wish to leave earlier than the conclusion of the exhibition can certainly do so. In the afternoon there is to be a rock show by a band from Navi Mumbai who are just releasing an album.

The Thane Club is also preparing mementoes for each participant and have requested that we confirm the participation of individuals as soon as possible. We therefore hope that you will take part. There is no entry fee for this event and you need not even be a member of the Vintage Register of the IARC as the membership aspects are now under preparation and will be communicated to you at a later date.

The drive on the 1st of May to the HVOC of Thane and Nashik started from Nariman Point in the morning. We expected 10 vehicles to assemble and start from there, there were last minute drop outs and 6 cars gathered. Of these, eventually only two cars drove to Thane, others went for coffee. One car escorted us up to Sion and went home.





At Thane after the toll booth we were escorted by a number of motorcyclists to the venue. In fact only after reaching the toll booth did we come to know that coffee was preferred. We had left Nariman Point at about 8.00 AM, surprisingly, the weather was cool and breezy, only after reaching at around 9.15 did the temperatures shoot up. After arrival we parked our cars in position and had a look around, waiting for the Mall to open and also have coffee.




These guys from HVOC were quite creative to have programs to entertain the public. There was a photography competition, entry fee was Rs 200 and about 250 people took part. Our cars were photographed like crazy, at crazy angles and people were kept busy.



There was a display of models and memorabilia kept on tables for the entire day. For us who brought cars and did not have a place to go away to, tables were reserved at the food court and we spent the day drinking cold drinks, no other waters were available.






There were some folks from Nashik and we chatted, waiting for time to pass.

While the competiton was going on, there was also a bikers tour. These guys travelled around in Thane with Police escort, about 50 to 60 bikes, and took a few rounds in the mall parking and then left.
A newish band called Sufiyanas played some music for a while, they are from Vashi and are to release their first album shortly.





One person joined us at the food court and showed a Beetle themed chain which he had made. He made miniature Beetles with a die and these were joined by a chain. Quite a nice effort, but he insists that this will be a one-off. This was made in 18 K gold.







At the end of the day, this was me, fully topped up with Cola, a bit exhausted and filled with Vitamin D and B to last me a while.



You can be sure that HVOC was advised to have their events in cooler times.

While sitting in the food court which was at an upper level, we took some pictures. Actually there was a sizeable crowd, the quality of cars could have been better, but reasonable numbers were there. Two wheelers were also on display.





While going to Thane, we encountered Vivek Goenka's Fiat 500 which he had sent. There was also a yellow Beetle, and a Mercedes 560 SLC. Among the local cars was this Holden Torana, unfortunately it lost its roof and was modified.








We left at around 3.30PM and were given a certificate. While giving the certificates, we were told that we saved the day for them. True, but this was the wrong time.

And so it was this year too under a harsh, sweltering, but bright, sun. And of all things the crusty ol' fellow had to fall in love.
And it was a Wednesday. A welcome mid week break from the routine.

But then words can never substitute pictures. So why bother with the tattle. And so here are the more than a word & sentence substitutes.

The usual suspects were all present in good numbers. And in a shape and form that would put their much newer compatriots to great shame !

The Real News:
And the real big news from the exhibition. Admiral falling in love with a chit of a girl 1/10th his size ! Talk about compatibility.
And so decided to focus some attention on this beauty. For I too fell in love with her...(Mr Allan, God bless you, forgive me !).
