Subhash Chandra Bose’s 90-year-old car spotted in a godown

India's one of the most prominent freedom fighters, Subhash Chandra Bose is in news again.

An antique Baby Austin Car that Subhash Chandra Bose has traveled in across most places in Jharkhand between 1930 to 1941, has recently been spotted in one of the warehouses of Barari Coke Plant in Dhanbad.

According to a report in Bhaskar, Bharat Coking Coal Limited CMD Tapas Kumar Lahiry instructed the GM to ask the administration to hand over the car to the BCCL. Further, in a letter to the GM of PB area, KC Mishra, the car was asked to be sent to the guest house of Coal Nagar.

Keeping in view the recent developments, BCCL has informed about the car to Netaji Research Bureau in Kolkata.

The antique mode of transport is owned by Subhash Chandra Bose's paternal uncle, Ashok Bose, after the East India Company handed it over to him in the Barari Coke Plant.

Thank you for sharing. The car in the picture is ofcourse not the car being discussed, this is a Ford Super dating to around 1946/47.

Further reading about another of Bose's cars, a Wanderer, here

I do hope the car is cared for seriously, unlike most cars of historic significance which are usually dumped, being given a coat of brush paint every few years to freshen up.

Even if it is genuine information, the least that this news source could've done was refrain from including any image in the article, rather than putting up one of a car that's 2 decades newer (a late '40s Ford Super Deluxe! )

Re: Subhash Chandra Bose’s 90-year-old car spotted in a godown

While looking for more information on the supposed Netaji car, I came across this post from 2009, showing a 1939/40? Ford that was apparently used by Bose during his Andaman stay.

A further search revealed this interesting site talking about Netaji's later life, one of many conspiracy theories that he did survive. My interest though is the Fiat Delight

Another picture of Netaji alighting from a car, most likely a Ford V 8.

It could be the same car posted above in the Andamans. A 1939/41? Ford V8 Tourer.

Oddly enough TOI has reported that the car is a Ford Super Deluxe. How that can be confused for a Baby Austin (or vice-versa) is baffling

Hey Karl, thats a 1937 Ford. The bonnet and the grille kept getting more curves for 1938, 1939 and 1940.

Well one can't blame the journalist fraternity on this one, naturally they would have no idea about the difference between the two. Its likely that they asked an oldtimer around the plant, who promptly said Austin because other than Austin, Dodge, 'Ply-mowth and Sher-let' they don't know too many brands

Anyways, Netaji's disappearance I think was around 1945, so it is unlikely he travelled in this 1947 Ford either.

If I understood right the Officer quoted says that the BRR series is the first, starting in 72-73! Incorrect. BRR would very much be correct for the 40s.
