Vahan gremlins & mysteries unveiled for Old Vehicles The Vahan portal and website have done wonders though for digitising all available data on motor vehicle valid registrations in India. At the click of the mouse, the data is available in desktops and also with handheld portable devices with the law enforcement officials on outdoor duties.
The RTO and traffic police have the login facility to enter metadata and algorithms of the owners and also update these whenever desired.
The downside that needs to be addressed though are quite a few, especially for older motor vehicle owners. If a fitness certificate is not validated after the due five years, the registration details of the respective vehicle fully disappears. These become untraceable on the portal and website as the vehicle becomes a non-entity, despite the fact that it's registration is not cancelled by the appropriate authority. It is though proper that a vehicle whose registration is officially cancelled is not displayed. But the odds favour a display of the details of such a vehicle even if the registration is cancelled and it is scrapped, showing particulars of the last ownership and the words "Registration Cancelled" displayed on the RC document popping up on the portal/website. This is to prevent misuse of the registration by dubious means in future by 'fly by night' operators as have happened in the past. With the scrapping policy coming into effect soon, we shall see a spate of such registration cancellations, that shall be mandatory for scrapping the vehicle to earn rebates in GST duties and discounts if any.
The next major gremlin is that the vocabulary of the portal and website are very limited to current or very recent motor vehicle models.
- A 1940's Matchless 350 cc bike has been registered as a Royal Enfield Bullet.
- A Ford Consul from 1952 has been registered as a Ford Ikon.
- A 1955 Landmaster is registered as an Ambassador.
There are as many models of yore that are also facing similar problems with the illiterate website/portal vocabulary and are getting misrepresented on RTO papers.
Apart from the Vahan website/portal, the insurance companies too are ill-equipped to deal in this matter as their ignorant software too are with very limited names of auto makers and their respective models. They leave the column Vehicle IDV as N.A., but identify the engine and chassis numbers, model year and so on.
The Vahan website/portal designed by Babus from the NIC, with a very limited understanding of automobiles needs to have a provision/ roll down menu for "Any Other" wherein the Babu can at least fill up the "alien" (for them) vehicle name and model that will be helpful both to the owner and to the authorities.
