Jeep Despatcher

I'm told that this is a 1948/49 Jeep Despatcher, original RHD, two wheel drive, has a side valve engine.Did they make RHD jeeps?? Were these made for the U.S.Postal Dept?? The rims and tyres don't look right.Can any of the Jeep enthusiasts provide some info...

I dont know much about anything on 4 wheels but then why would the postal department jeeps need gun holders and blackout lights?

'can't say about the rims but tyres I suspect are Amby ones! Nevertheless, nice jeep!
'wish I was able to buy one of these back in the days when they sold for peanuts!

That's a strange looking I-beam front axle. I haven't seen any thing like that in a 2wd Jeep.

Yup! That is an original RHD, 2wd dispatcher, mostly used by the postal department. Good find! More details here!

I was told once that Postal department vehicles in the US were RHD to ease pick up and drop off at the mail boxes.

It's a military despatch Jeep, right? So Gun holder and black out lights are supposed to be there

Many thanks guys !! Too many converted low bonnet jeeps in the market, so I just wanted to check with the experts.I'm told low bonnet conversion is a cottage industry in Pollachi and they do a pretty good job.

the wheels look like amby wheels. my point is the CJ2A was the successor of the MB/GPW & the predecessor of the CJ3B, so why is the wheel difference??
also the gear stick is from the amby & the horn button stalk is different.

They are by no means Amby wheels!

The lug nuts are only 4 in number on each rim, whereas Amby has 5. Plus Amby rims have just a few studs for mounting the wheelcaps, and not a whole "lip" within the rims unlike these.

whoops, whoops..i really missed that out.

you are right, amby wheels do have 5 nuts & a different kind of a centre hub.

I think the DJ3A dispatch jeep did not come in right hand drive.
I believe right hand drive dispatch jeeps started with the
DJ5/DJ5A.
Nonetheless, a rare find indeed....

that's not a CJ3A, that's a CJ2A. please see the winshield. also the DJ5/5A were wagon type dispatchers not open types like this one.

I did not say it is a CJ3A, In fact i did not even say its a DJ3A.(Please refer to my post)
I just mentioned that DJ3A's did not come in right hand drive.

And there were no DJ2A's, if that's what you mean.

If this jeep is indeed a dispatch jeep then the windscreen frame on the jeep
pictures provided by sunilgee is wrong for the jeep, it should have a CJ3A type single windscreen frame.

The DJ3A's also came with in convertible as well as hardtop versions.
Also, the DJ3A's were not solely meant for postal duties
but were a more like multi-utility delivery vehicles.
