Here's some info from eastern India :

Lawley Sen & Co.
Dealers for Chevvy and Dodge for entire state of Bihar with branches in Patna, Ranchi, Gaya, Bhagalpur.

Later they became Mahindra dealers and remained so till 2005. Later they shut down their automobiles business as new dealerships for Mahindra came up.

The most reliable motor garage in the 1940s, 50s and even 90s used to be The Howrah Motor company, also dealers for Excide Battery.

From what I remember from 1970s the dealerships in Patna were :

Fiat / Premier Auto - Auto Distributors
Hindustan Motors - Progressive Motors, later Ess Pee Automobiles

1984 - The first Maruti Dealership -Mithila Motors

Bajaj Scooter dealers - Auto Syndicate
Lambretta Scooters - Vijay Agriculture implements
Rajdoot - Ranchers and Company

Multi Brand imported cars - Mohan Mohan & Co.

Not sure who sold Standard Herald cars, never visited their showrooms

All of these were located on one road called the Exhibition Road in Patna.

At the recent VCCCI rally in Bombay a 1947 Singer debuted fresh out of a body off restoration.





A plate on the dash mentioned "Coachwork by Dewar's Garage & Engineering Works"



The owner kindly informed me that he contacted the club in the UK, who said there were 12 chassis dispatched to India to be locally bodied, and this is probably the only known survivor.

Now this is also reminded me of Harit's Singer SM1500 (or 1300? I cant remember) which also carried a plate saying "Assembled & distributed by Dewar's Garage"

The 1939 Dodge came from Addison & Co. Ltd. (I assume Madras)

The 1951 Hindustan 14 came from 'Shantikiran Motors, South Parade (Mahatma Gandhi Road), Bangalore'

I didn't check this but interestingly, Dewar's Garage is still there at the same spot but now has become a Maruti Suzuki dealer. It is one of the oldest though.

Here's one more that particularly appealed to me - the Adler range sold in 1936 by 'Aero & Motors'. Note Indian figures illustrated (wearing Parsi style saris), and the rare Sport version is shown as well. The description reads 'speedlined all steel bodies' - now there's a new one!



Any idea what else did Aero & Motors sell? With a name like that I should think they also catered to the aviation industry in some way.

Who remembers the Duke Brothers agents at Connaught Place? Or for that matter who remembers the De Luxe motorcycle itself? I'd never heard of it before.



This was with a series of advertisements from the 'Firms of the Hungarian People's Republic' promoting trade with India.

Does anyone remember a publication in the 1920s/1930s called "Indian and Eastern Motors"? Attached are some scans, alas, in the best quality I have.

A Mr. H K Hales, MP, in Calcutta seemed to be the agent for many British motorcycles, including known names like James, Excelsior and Ariel; as well as more obscure marques like New Hudson





Walter Locke & Co. were agents for Raleigh (to be honest I had only heard of their bicylces) and Levis

In 1941 George Augustine Henry Oakes established 'The Garage' in Ootacumund, Tamil Nadu which was primarily involved in selling automobile spare parts. 'The Garage' was later acquired by, Mr. W.W.Ladden who then changed the name of the Company to George Oakes Limited.

In 1945 the legendary industrialist, Mr. S. Anantharama Krishnan and his fast growing Amalgamations group acquired the Company. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Simpsons & Co. Ltd. Later that year George Oakes Limited acquired Gordon Woodroffe Motors Limited and moved its headquarters to Chennai. During this period the Company was the sole distributor of Ford cars in South India.

The South India Automotive Corpn. Pte. Ltd. sold the Ambassador - now already with OHV engines.
