Re: An aging fleet, career retirement, farm life beckoning - Help me plan my garage

In my opinion I think you should keep the innova as 1.75 lakh kms is nothing for that engine and I'm sure it'll soak up all of coorgs roads beautifully, perhaps you can spend some dough and give it a type 4 facelift.

If you get a good price for the scala I would sell it off and definitely keep the Tiago, it would be perfect having something nimble when you don't feel like taking your bigger cars out.

You only live once so why not make the most of it and go ahead with getting the jimny too, it's 4wd can get you anywhere you want to go so at this point you'll have a car for all sorts of usage.

In a similar position after moving back home with no real intentions to return to the city anymore, except for maybe the occasional meetings and stunts.

First things first. Keep the wife happy. Keep the Tiago. A small automatic beater car is always good to have around.
I'd say keep the Innova for those hauls to the city and the airport. It has enough ground clearance to tackle the country side with bullet proof reliability and a humungous boot. That thing will run forever with minimal maintenance. They no longer make vehicles like that.

Sell the Scala. You'd really need a capable 4x4 there, and you've booked a Jimny.
You want a proper workhorse in the plantation to transport fertilisers/ plantation produces/ workers in a trailer, get yourself a post 2008 Major Turbo or a Thar DI 4x4. Chances are that in sometime, you will sell off all the above and keep the Jeep and the Innova! The real work-horses!

I can not begin to imagine your plight in choosing what vehicle to keep and what to let go as I am assuming each vehicle must've entered at a landmark occasion and must've been responsible for fond memories. It's very difficult to let go off the older vehicles but we must face the reality and bite the bullet.

My sincere suggestion is - get rid of the Innova and the Scala as they both have served their purpose so far and would be of very little use once you are settled in Coorg.
Consider buying a Toyota Hilux as that is one vehicle you can use for almost all your needs - be it farm or the highway. Considering it's a Toyota - reliability for another decade or so would not be a matter of concern. And even if you do decide to come back to Bangalore - the vehicle shouldn't be that big of a problem.

Tiago can be kept for a while and you can decide to let it go and buy the jimny after maybe a couple of years.

All the best!!

Re: An aging fleet, career retirement, farm life beckoning - Help me plan my garage

Firstly, congratulations on a well-maintained garage!

In my prospective you are already well sorted, Sir, and pardon me saying but you should channelize your time and energy to your post-retirement venture with the farm here on and I hope you adjust well with the farm life.

You don’t need a new car - and associated unwanted investments at this point- anyways, so kindly consider cancelling the Jimny booking. The Innova is a very capable vehicle (you know that well) and can take care of all your farm and highway duties and the Tiago can perform as a beater, plus both these brands have a good maintenance network to keep you stress free. The Scala has served its purpose well and should go to a new owner now, and this money can be banked as maintenance funds for the remaining two or to set up a solar unit at your farm for future needs if not already done.

In fact, as a first step towards EV, you may also want to consider an electric two-wheeler for now before you move to an electric car and the solar power you generate in the future will fuel these thus providing a good ROI.

Cheers!

Following suggestion is valid if you don’t need a 6/7 seater and can stretch your budget

Sell the Innova and Scalia and keep the Tiago as beater

Buy Isuzu V Cross 4WD AT and if you can push your budget the Hilux 4WD AT provided either of your state (KE/KA) provide registration of these vehicle as Private Car without much fuss. If possible try to get it registered in Coorg as big diesel ICE have a higher probability of getting banned in metros (Bangalore). They provide an option to transport farm produce and reliability with decent levels of comfort (not as much as the Innova / Scala of course)

I think you should sell the Innova and the Scala. Retain the Tiago and buy a Hilux which can be of use in farm duties , off road too.

Wait until you move into retirement and then take the decision. You will have a better frame of reference and a connect with ground realities rather than second guessing the situation as is happening now.

My assessment is that you do not need to sell any of your cars as they provide a solution for different use cases. After you move into retirement, if any of the cars are left idle or are not used adequately take up the issue of sale / replacement at that point in time. That would be the optimum solution for now.

Re: An aging fleet, career retirement, farm life beckoning - Help me plan my garage

Hi All,

Thanks for sharing your perspectives. Near consensus is Keep Innova9yes its renewed till 2027 and possibility of another until 2032) and possibly Tiago, sell Scala and replace Tiago with Jimny at the right time.

Another one is to explore XL6- Sure I will.
I cant be happier with this advice - as I dont need to additionally book a new car and spend money (apart from Jimny).

Thanks for the appreciation of my garage too
Our farm is a smallish coffee estate that does not warrant a full fledged farm operations with tractors, harvesters etc., so vans, jeeps would just work fine.

I dont fancy the likes of Hilux's and other expensive options suggested- as I personally think they are way too over priced. Not yet bought into the EV brigade as our source of electricity is still not renewable. I may change my view over time.

I will keep updated on the progress. Once again thanks to all who have taken time out to read through and share their views in a sensitive and considerate manner.

Please consider access route to your farm, especially in the rainy season. I have to drive around a km on the mud roads to reach my small farm near Ramanagara. My friend's Innova got stuck, needing a tractor to pull it out. While my 2WD duster has never blinked an eye. Unless yours can be accessed through an asphalted stretch.

Re: An aging fleet, career retirement, farm life beckoning - Help me plan my garage

Update as on 14/05/25.

I am retiring on the 30th of June and all plans have held up tight, well, so far!

A small change to our plans- we will divide our time between Bangalore and Coorg for the next two years (till our daughter completes her studies in 2027).

My Jimny is already 20 months with ~25k on the ODO! We will keep Jimny and Innova at the farm and Tiago in Bangalore.

As the date draws close, personally excited while being a touch nervous too

Thanks, all.

All the best!

Maybe someday we can visit your farm. Such a disgrace that me (and maybe some others like me) hasn't seen an inside of a farm.
