February 2016 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

I would like to add to the statistics with figures for segment-wise market share over a period of last month, 3 months and 6 months. These numbers give a fair picture of each vehicles market share within its own segment and whether they are gaining or losing. Plus the percentage market share and overall segment-wise sales are colour-coded to reflect relative position.

Segmentation might not be perfect but I have done it to the best of my knowledge. Have also highlighted (in yellow) top 10 sellers for each month over the past six months. Hope this is helpful.

Re: February 2016 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Rated 5 stars. One of the most eagerly waited posts on TBHP every month.

Big drop for Honda. Ciaz beat City as well. Any reasons?

Endeavor and Fortuner maintain their levels compared to last month with Ford dropping a little and Toyota gaining a little.

Renault doing great with Kwid increasing footfalls and sales. With launch of new Duster we may see a higher jump next month.

Toyota gaining as well. Big drop for VW though.

Rest all maintain their levels.

If there is an award for consistent sales then it needs to go to one of the back benchers Fiat or Skoda. These guys love linear graphs. One consistently selling around 600-800 and the other one just a slight more than 1200 each month.

Being a Fiat owner it feels bad that such good cars hardly find any takers. Service isnt as bad as it is made out to be. its just the lethargic attitude of FCA by not bringing in new models. It does so well in Turkey and Brazil. Indian market being similar few high selling models can actually get this manufacturer back on track. Conservative nature of the top management doesnt help at all.

As for VW/Skoda their attitude towards pre-sales and after sales service needs to improve dramatically if they want to improve their market share. Most of their cars are either better or as good as the top seller in each segment but bad name and folks are staying away from it.

Re: February 2016 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

A few surprises in store this month.

-Aspire in triple digits. That is really poor. It's numbers are not even half of Zest, which itself is a poor performer.
-Figo numbers too are not encouraging
-City drops below 5K mark. Ciaz is number 1 in the segment this month!
-123 Quantos? Where did they come from, out of the blue!
-Zest slightly increases its numbers. Overall it seems to be steady around 2000-2100 mark

Re: February 2016 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

February sales attractions:
  1. Figo, such a good product, is on a constant deceleration. Why?
  2. Quanto from 1 to 123! That's quite a jump. How?
  3. A shocker for Duster, may be it is for new model launch.
  4. Superb - are the increased numbers a result of new model launch or there were discounts on outgoing model?
  5. Safari selling more than Bolt is quite a shocker for TATA

Re: February 2016 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

-Good to see 7500+ shipments of Kwid, should be touching 10K next month onwards.
-S Cross seems to be settling around 2 to 2.5K numbers, deserves more after the price cut.
-1096 Tiagos shipped, when is the formal launch going to happen? too big a number if these are display cars (or too less if these are for customer deliveries as well).

Re: February 2016 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for the report.

The Top 20 seems to have undergone a minor shakeup. Kwid raises to 8th place, City falls to 18th. KUV100 enters the Top 20. Expect the Kwid to climb further. Honda will not be happy to see both the City and Jazz in the Top Losers chart.

Some other segment level observations from my side.
  • Good to see Kwid dispatches pick up. Seems to be settling well at 2nd place. Looking forward to when they can do 10K plus dispatches. Poor showing from the Nano. Celerio remains steady. i10 continues to drop. I think Hyundai should kill this. poor numbers as usual from the GM entry offerings.

  • Swift back to doing solid numbers and i10 Grand sustains in the lower end of the premium hatch segment. Impressive numbers from the KUV100 considering the flak it got for the quirky design. Almost 5000 units is pretty big and I hear there is a waiting period. Good to see dispatches of the Tiago start. Looks like the Bolt will soon be dead and buried. Cars like the Pulse, Brio, Micra all continue to do badly with no real hope of revival.

  • Elite i20 continues the lead in the premium hatch segment. With Maruti focusing on Baleno exports, looks like 7-8000 will be the standard dispatches for the Baleno. As per reports almost 3000+ units have been exported to Japan and Europe. Jazz continues in a distant 3rd place with ~3300 units. Although much better performance than the previous generation, Honda would have expected better. Huge drop for the Polo is surprising considering it was just refreshed. Figo drops further. Disappointing and inexplicable. Nothing much from the Punto. The Punto Pure seems to have had no major effect.

  • Xcent and Amaze neck and neck in the compact sedan space with 4000+ units. The Amaze refresh should definitely help it pull ahead of the Xcent on a more consistent basis. Aspire down to tripe digits with ~850 units. Cannot think of any more reasons to justify this. Can somebody from Ford read this and explain. Zest maintains its 2000+ numbers. Etios maintains its numbers with its taxi following.

  • The C2 sedan space sees a new leader- The Ciaz. For only the 2nd time since its launch, it overtakes the City. Just last month I said that the Ciaz does not seem to be able to bridge the gap. Did not expect to be proved wrong so soon. Verna takes back the 3rd place, with the Vento and Rapid twins rounding off the top 5. A very predicatable segment.

  • The Creta continues to rule the Compact SUV space Ecosport has dropped.Ford has been sustaining with consistent numbers from the Ecosport. So will be deeply worrying if the Ecosport continues to fall. TUV300 also seems to have dropped. S Cross is picking up. Looks like it will be a sleeper hit. Duster continues to struggle. Only ~400 is probably due to the face-lift that just got launched, but don't see any major uptick with the facelift. With the Brezza storm coming later this month, would be interesting to see how the segment changes. Scorpio and XUV maintain their numbers. Same for the Innova.

  • The Endevour drops. Fords weird marketing at work. Would have expected more dispatches over the last month. Finally some number in the Trailblazer column. Read that another 150 units have been imported. Need to see how long it takes to sell those. No big numbers from the Santa Fe and CR V. 14 Yetis sold is a surprise.

  • No big shakeups in the D segment. Continues to be ruled by the Corolla but numbers seem to be dropping. Octavia doing pretty well. I had thought the Elantra had been stopped. Looks like that is not the case.

Re: February 2016 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

First look encouraging Kwid numbers there, but really speaking, it should be way up near the Alto numbers given its segment leading package. However really doubt if they will ever match the scale of the Marutis.

Though the other usual suspects in the name of the Swift twins are doing good numbers, it is really a superb feat for Hyundai selling its premium hatch i20 in the 5 digit mark even when its latest rival has started to catch up (Baleno) with some good numbers.

Similar observation for the Creta which is the only mini SUV which makes it to the top 20!

The other interesting thing is that all of the top 16 cars are above the 5k mark in sales which IMO was not the case even some time ago.

KUV has made some good numbers and is the only other Mahindra now in the top 20 apart from Bolero.

The ones beaten down in numbers are the Innova mostly due to the impending launch, Swift has taken some beating mostly due to competition, so is Celerio and Ciaz, not sure if there is any specific reason.

March 28th is the launch date of Tiago, hence these indicate dealer dispatches for Test drive/display.
