My 1965 Ambassador Mk II

Hello !!

I am very new to the forum and very excited to be here , you get so much of knowledge , help advice and suggestion ,I was very eagerly waiting to get the approvals to start posting and asking for guidance Alas !! Iam here.

It was dream to own a Ambassador and it was such a co-incidence , I was looking at the free ad section for cars in 2009 July and came across this add which said 1965 Mark-II Ambassador in original condition, I called up the gentleman and took an appointment to meet up, I was so impressed with the beauty but had no idea about cars, took to an friends uncle had a quite a bit of knowledge on these and gave me a go !! but needed to negotiate on the price, I tried to to negotiate but in vain so lost hope and went home disappointing.

After a year same time in July the Owner of the car calls me up and asks me to pick up the car for the same price i quoted last year, I could not believe but was damn happy , met the owner the same day and drove the beauty ..I was so excited to drive her I could see people looking at the car on every traffic signal i stopped I was feeling damn good about this :-)) I reached home and took my mom, wife nephews sister on a small ride.. there was so much of excitement on their face ,I felt like an oldie driving this beauty the feel on the steering the way the horn sounded it was a nostalgic moment for me felt like i went back to the bygone era...

I drive her or start her every week , I need a good mechanic who can work on her , I am un-able to fine one and few parts that I need to source. Need some advice and guidance from the experts on this forum and help out to restore her to her original look.

Karan the MarkII looks really good and original. You have been extremely lucky to have bought the same car after a year and that too at the price you stated. Though i am not a amby guru but would like to point out please do get the whole wiring of the car checked thoroughly. A preventive measure.
BTW any pointers on the lucky price (purchase price) which stood firm till one year.

Karan
I see you are based out of BLR. Try talking to Asif. he looked after my grandads Amby Mark II from 1969 till I left BLR in 2003. (By the way, my car's no is MYO 3571). PM me if you want directions to his workshop. He is based out of Moore Road in Frazer town.

Thank you Samsag !! You Bet !! I could not believe it was the same month last year too when I received the call from the Owner!! But when the deal didn't go through i was really depressed and felt bad for losing .. he quoted 45K I quoted 30K and good reasonable price :-)). He also wanted to give to a person who could take care of it as they had good bond with the car, his son , daughter and wife really felt bad when they and were in tears when they sold it to me.. I assured them and assured I will take care of it and they insisted I had lunch at their place and keep in touch like a family :-) I do call and say them hello and wish them on festivals.. What a experience I really liked the whole thing with the transaction of my Ambassador :-))

@ Shasun Thank you Sir!! for the information I will pm you my number.

@ Pramod Thank you!!

You are lucky to get the car at a reasonable price. Do open a separate thread and update the progress of the work you plan to do on the car. My sincere request is to keep the car original.

@ pramod I was lucky to get at that price on the same day while I was filling at the petrol bunk, One elderly gentleman came to me and asked to if it was my car and I would sell it , I told it was my dream to buy this car and i have just paid for it and heading home, he started to really pester me and quoted 85K hard cash and will do the settlement right away.. I had to convince him to that I would not sell it.....

I will restore her in her original color and shape no modifications at all.. except that I am looking for the right mech , tinker and painter who would do a good job on her.

karan congratulations and welcome to the proud family of Amby and Landmaster owners.the car is very original to me. The rear beading needs to be replaced. The chrome lines beadings with complete galss are sold but come by very rarely. So you have to be very alert and grab one whenever thats available at a good price.
Next the dash speedo and the three meters used to be of Yenkay make in 1965.The ones fitted are not OE stuff. But with lots of patience you will be able to get the original ones.
Have a good battery and take her out every week once at least for a spin. Sundays are better as the traffic is sparse. Running them regularly make the cars fit.

Hi Karan,

Congrats on your lovely purchase !!! The Mark 2 tribe is increasing on team-bhp .

The car is great and like already said is most original you can get - few cars have survived the urge to convert them to later mk3 / 4 ones.

Good to know that you plan to keep / restore it to the original state.

I know you will receive full help in terms of advice, help for sourcing parts, manuals from team-bhp members as I speak from experience.

Cheers,

Thank you Anjan, as always you are there to give a very micro opinion which most of us look out for , The speedometer are original except the plates ( faces have been changed ) i have the original yenkay meter faces , the previous owner felt they have faded and hence changed, Thank God he had preserved them.

Can you let me know the battery which would be ideal for the car, I am in search for the beading and looking out for one.
can you pls advice would it be good to have the old smiths speedometer for the car , I have checked at the bangalore gujri and quoting around 4500k .

I have the choke cable with me , again the owner had preserved it .

Still looking out for a good mech in bangalore, I have issues with the clutch needs to get it fixed.

karandb- its a relief for you as the previous owner has kept the originals (speedo, choke cable) for you. I am sure one would like a car to be as it was when new and just out of the showroom. So in my opinion the Smiths need not be bought. Is he selling all the three units (speedo, watch and the oil, fuel, amps meters) for Rs4.5K? If so you can buy and keep it as a souvenir.
But maybe some members will suggest you to fit the Smiths for more of the British kinda looks. If you replace, the complete Smiths set needs to be fitted. The gear knob needs to be then of the ivory colour with the chrome ring at its tip. These can be done up bit by bit as and when you get these spares.
For battery nothing beats Amaron in today's market. If your car has the old dynamo you can go in for a good alternator.I have fitted an alternator seven years ago and that removes many hassles.
I am sure teambhp member PAVAN KADAM will be the best person to tell you about a good mechanic in Bangalore.

That's a lovely original car you've got there Karan - you are right to feel so proud of owning her and it's great she's gone to someone who appreciates her. I look forward to your updates as you start to work on the car.

Regards
Ed
