White Hyundai i20 gets major ICE upgrade

Dear Friends,

the car is about to complete one year in july with 16500kms already on Odo.
Having lived with the strictly average stock ICE i20 comes with , the desire to upgrade the ICE was growing every day.
Though the stock speakers were replaced after 1 month itself, the stock headunit was not doing justice at all. so finally decided to add an AMP.

Below is the breakup of the upgrade.
Installation was done at Driven, East of Kailash.

Speakers Front- Hertz ESK Components Rs 7500
Speakers Rear- Rockford fosgate prime series 6 inch coaxials. Rs 2200

Amp-Kenwood 846 - Rs 5500
Bull audio 8 gauge wiring kit - Rs 2300
Speaker wire- awg Rs 150/mtr. total 16 mtrs.
Hi/lo converter-Connection Rs 4400
Extra RCA ,Bull audio- Rs 400.

Total expenditure-Rs 22,400/-

installation was done in a very professional way & all the wires were laid neatly.
sound output and quality is vastly improved over the stock unit. Mids and Highs are clearly defined , the front components deliver decent bass too!

Budget constraint prevented addition of Sub, though it will be added in a month or two. Need advise from bhpians on this, as the amp is rated at 60W RMS*4 . Not very power full.

Below are few pics(average quality!).

Re: White Hyundai i20 gets major ICE upgrade

Nice upgrade Jaspal Singh. I have heard a lot about 'Driven' but have not yet got a chance to visit their shop.
Well, I bet your ride would be bombarding now! I am refraning from upgrading ICE in my Rapid due to some warranty issues. I had enquired from a shop in Tikona Park, NIT (I hope you know) about ICE but he said if we don't cut the stock wiring, then there are no such issues. Can you confirm what happened in your ICE install? Were any wires cut?
Regarding subwoofer, try to look for JBL BassPro12. It has an in-built Amplifier, so your current amp will remain as it is. I have not enquired about the price. I had once heard the sound output of a DZire (during my Alto ICE install) with 6 speaker ICE (factory fitted ones, I think), a Pioneer touch screen HU, 4 Ch. Amp and JBL BassPro Sub (with inbuilt amp). The owner was not very keen on providing info on the install.

Thanks loud & sorry for the late reply.
installation at driven was done in a professional way and no wires were cut. you can consult your skoda dealer , regarding warranty policy before upgrading. i am assuming you haven't upgraded your ICE unit yet...

Meanwhile a Rockford Fosgate R1 subwoofer has been added two weeks back to complete the setup and the ride is definately bombarding now! installation was done at driven.
The two rear channels of the kenwood amp were brideged to drive the sub and the rear RF speakers are being driven of the headunit. though i find this amp to be slightly underpowered , it scores on sound quality.

Can anyone please suggest the best way to adjust gain settings?

Amount spent:-
Rs 6000/- Rockford fosgate R1 Sub in a sealed enclosure
Rs 400/- subwoofer wire. Rs 275/mtr *1.5

below are the pics.

Thanks

Had this amp during my initial days. A very good SQ amp at rock bottom price to drive the speakers, to get the max out of the woofer you might need to upgrade the amp. DD c4c and Rainbow Beat 4 would be an ideal upgrade ! till then enjoy your music !

Sorry for the back to back posts, for gain settings its best to read this :

Personally I dint use the MM during my initial days. Setting everything to 'zero' and starting with one channel at a time helps. Self tuning is one of the best way to tune your system. Dont be shy of tiring various combinations .

Hello Jaspal Ji,

I am contemplating between Rockford fosgate R1S412 and JBL CS1215B (With company enclosure), any idea which one would go well with JBL 646 amp? Or do you suggest your kenwood amp?

Your inputs would be highly appreciated.

Hi,

R1S412 is a SVC sub rated at 150 W RMS, which is same as R1 sub installed in my car -the only difference is that R1 comes with company enclosure.
JBL sub rated at 275 W rms would require a more powerfull amp than Kenwood.

so based upon specs, would recommend JBL sub /amp combo..

Do you have stock speakers?

Re: White Hyundai i20 gets major ICE upgrade

Nice setup Jaspal. Its always preferable to retain the stock HU as the after market HUs are not directly compatible without a panel change. Congratulations and enjoy your music. However if you want to enhance the sound stage, you can upgrade the rear door speakers to components and add a mono block or a good 2 channel amp to drive the sub. Just ensure the installer tunes it based on your preference or rightly suggested by our friends, do it yourself and set it to your liking.

So you suggest JBL as the appropriate option. There are some nice deals showing online for JBL Sub/amp so you know that is why kind of inclined towards it.

Yes, my system is completely stock as of now. At first stage I am planning for sub and amp and later some good front components. This is going to be a real slow step by step purchase coz of budget constraints.
Mar - Sub purchase
Apr - Amp purchase
May - Installation
June/July - Components

May sound funny but stage wise planning should turn out to be better.

Re: White Hyundai i20 gets major ICE upgrade

Hi Sudeep,

Around the sub, you can look at solid 8 inch subs from jbl, infinity, rockford fosgate brands. the output is on par with the 12 inch subs. this will help you save boot space. with your current order of purchase, you can run the HU on existing OEM 6 inch co-axials and connect the amp to the sub. please ensure that the OEM speakers are not connected to the amp as most of them are pretty basic speakers and cant handle the output. once you have your comps, you can replace the oem co-axials. for optimum output, you can go for 4 nos of comps on the doors and use the 4 channel amp and go for a mono or 2 channel for the sub. all the best.
