Pushing it back didn’t work.

The winch motor starts and the LC has left the hill.

Although we lost about 30 minutes in this rescue operation, it was an unexpected by important lesson demonstrating the importance of a winch in off-roading.

When I started on this circuit, I had Lateef as the co-pilot. Once he discovered I couldn’t understand Tamil, he resorted to one word commands like left and right. Since there was gorge on both sides, it was important to get it exactly right. But with all the experts around me I was pretty confident and did this circuit perfectly.

This is me climbing.

Heh, heh, piece of cake.

I thought the LC was the odd man out with its long wheel base and then I see this pic of it plonked on a little hill. hehehe - sorry but its quite funny.

Then to see the winch being set up and the LC pulled free is something I would not imagine seeing a bunch in India doing.

This MM550/540 is my fav. Simple looking with not so fat tires but looks like it tamed the terrain pretty well.

OK, so between the MM, CJ and the LC which was the most capable off roader. which one got stuck more often and which one sailed through. Anyone?

fortunately no one got stuck except for the one instance where the LC was stranded on the hill. I think all jeeps did well. :)

Hi Guys,

Since this point has been raised.

Each vehicle has it inherent Advantages & Disadvantages.

For Climbing/Descending & Stability (OTR) - Longer Wheel Bases Have an advantage.

For Gulleys/Pits/ Humps - Shorter Wheel Bases have an advantage.

The most important equipment is the driver. His Role OTR.
1) Respect Nature and DON'T Damage the terrain.
2) Understand the vehicle.
3) Read the terrain obstacle.
4) Drive.

Regards,

Arka

Just one word.. Brilliant!!!!

Krishna, try not to use wide angle for this time. Your 70-200 is THE LENS for this kind of event.

As your shot here..This is the kind of angle with some space around will give the maximum impact.

Thanks for the compliment.

Even i realized that 70-200 photos were better than the wide angle ones, it had a dramatic effect, but i thought 10-22 will have a better impact.

Next time onwards, i know what lens to use for such events.

Regards
krishna.

All I know is D R I V E.. I've begun to realise off road has a lot to teach you if you care to observe and learn how to understand the engine as well as the terrain..

Dont care much about the vehicle you are in as each has its advantages and disadvantages..which we'll have to figure out..

Am waiting to do the same terrain in a ... err.. Indica..My reasons for choosing the same..
1. Very minimal front and rear overhang..so we can clear any obstacle..
2. The car is made by a truck manufacturer and hence can do the terrain..if driven cleverly..
3. Underpowered ..but enough to do a slow drive..no wheel SPIN here..

The car may scrape in a few places..but thats the fun..Ofcourse ARKA and his winch is always there for help ::)

So guys..Indica owners...welcome to off road..

Cheers

Nope, he is not. headers, i think the palio too suits the terrain & you have that extra grunt for the climbs. Also madan is ready to his car, i heard. :D

Indica cannot offroad at all buddy. Trust me. Have used indica's on the farm(indigo too used).
the problem is that once a wheel loses traction all you get is spin. Have stuck many times, revved hard to get out, but had to get 2-3 people to push out.
Ditto for the 4x2 safari. Rear wheel starts spinning, and no LSD means the other wheel is free(LSD comes only in 4x4 version).

@ Madan,EL,tsk: Welcome to headers :D

I think Indica's GC is suspect. I doubt whether it'll be able to clear those obstacles....unless you plan to drive around them.

The way the tailpipe hangs is not inspiring enough.

@Torqy & tsk,

Thats the challenge..To not let the car rule over you.. Also, the quarry we went has no loose sand..just BIG BIG STONES..

And TSK..there is a post by BikerSG to immitate LSD on a non LSD machine and prevent wheelspin..If my understaning is right..Do the following next time..

1. Gradually apply the brake while accelarating..so that at one point the non spinning wheel gets tha traction and the vehicle moves forward..

Personally have not tried it out..will do so soon and give feedback!!

I still prefer a Indica over palio..Diesel Vs. Petrol..Diesel RoCKS!!

Ofcourse..I'd like Madan's Lancer instead..its got the rally heritage..atleast!!

Been there done that. Gave up after the clutch started emitting a burning smell. Gave 20rs to 5(4rs each) guys who pulled the car out, or rather lifted it out.

I'm game to try out my Indica petrol during the next off-road training organized in Chennai.

ex670c / headers - think an Indica petrol will make the grade?

Sure,hrag.
At the end of the trip, u'll be driving her like freddy flintstone!
