Why? You don't drive with all wheels in the air, do you?

XUV500 is also essentially a FrontWD vehicle. However check out the position of the clutchpack which powers the rear wheels.

Just on Lighter note, Yes I drive on four wheel with all in air; being a ralliart I do this many times on my gypsy, though no yet tried on XUV .

Thanks & regards,

Alok

Ummm... Alok, you drive in rallies, and you ask about how to test the AWD functionality of a front/4WD vehicle? Or are you just having some fun testing the collective knowledge base of this forum?

This is one of the reasons why I was more concerned about AWD.
In AWD I never felt that torque is getting transfered to all the wheels in AWD lock mode, in gypsy even the passenger sitting next to you can feel that extra grunt; even in 4wd Hi.

If I say that front right tire started rotating when I applied some friction on left, it means that left is getting traction & it is transferring the power to right which is free. Ideally it should be opposite; the power should be transferred to the tire which is getting some traction.

Thnks!

As Sutripta says, it is happening (torque going to wheels which has least traction/load) because it is an open differential. If it had a differential lock or some intelligent system like LSD, some torque would have gone to the other wheel also.

Torque transfer through a slipping clutch to the rear would never give the same feeling as an equal split 4x4 drive without a centre diff. Some of the grunt you feel is probably the tyres scrubbing off the transmission windup.

fingers crossed, one day, just like the real time display showing power split to all 4 wheels and other off-road gadgetry on any new Range Rover, the same shall be available on the mainstream vehicles as well!
