Gypsy Mod Pictures: Rear Seat & Bed

This thread is regarding gypsy rear seat modifications for comfort.

I have read many posts on team bhp regarding gypsy rear seats, fixing a front facing seats is the only option i saw on numerous posts here.I was not convinced by the idea of small front facing seats, they are not comfortable, not better than original side facing seats.

My main priorities for gypsy rear seat are,
  • Hate to cut and drill my gypsy
  • Dont want to remove the rear original seats(but can compromise on that).
  • Want a comfortable bed for at least two adults.
After going through numerous gypsy posts and countless gypsy photos, i was totally confused. So i said to myself, Gypsy is a two seater. why am i trying to make an RV ( recreational vehicle ) out of it ?

Days passed, months passed. One fine day, took the gypsy out with a plan.

Final out come is this.

Three plywood boards wrapped with cushon and covered with Art leather giving me a complete flat bed . There is no compromise in Boot space , after the bed installation it can still swallow lot of luggage

Same cushion boards can be changed to a comfortable front facing seats

Comfort checked on bad roads.

You can make the bed as comfortable as possible .

Are you ready for a cross country tour in your caravan?

Bed removed from the rear in seconds and your beloved Gypsy is stock with out any drilling , no nuts or bolts to loosen or tighten.

I will be testing my bed set up on my drive to Ladhak in 2014, till then i will keep my fingers crossed.

Very good idea.

I have been thinking of something similar, since I need side facing seats when I use my jeep for work and need front facing seats when taking kids at the back.

4X4addict This set up is very comfortable and hassel free for me , i had been using it since 1 year . Did 3500kms drive in 5 days , continous 1250kms drive with 2 other friends from wayanad kerela to my home town in 24 hrs . Jeep captain (forum id) checked my setup personally , you can take feed back from him .

Wonderful modification. The best part, as you have mentioned, is no cutting-drilling etc in the vehicle. The whole discussion of a rear seat with modified bed has come up in various places in various occasions; good to see this finally.

Re: Gypsy Mod Pictures: Rear Seat & Bed

Very nice & logical move there drbones. Few questions
1. Is the bed screwed / bolted to something OR is it just lying there?
2. If its just lying there, where do you keep it after removing?
3. How have you manged to fold the bed. Hinges?
