Still it would not break unless there there was an obstruction that opposed the rotation to the point it broke.

Behram Sir, kindly enlighten on the material and reason.

Hi Mr. Fazal,

I sure it is Teflon. Though I have only seen the pictures, it is quite amazing how the thing has sheared.

I think it must have been a failure of a bearing that caused this part to come under stress and break.

It will be great know Mr. Behram's views on this.

Regards, Jaskirat

Real Teflon is too soft. It will most probably be one of the engineering plastics with a dry lubricant as filler, say 'Oilon'

The shearing at the hub is unusual. One would expect some of the teeth to be broken/ chewed up, rather than this.

For silent running, phenolic cam gears were used for a long time.

I remember seeing a Volvo ( a 4x4 Van ) engine which had a timing gear of non metallic thing & in my Series Land Rover the timing chain tensioner gear is made of Aluminium.

This is a design feature , dont think has a design / material fault ( unless being repeated in No. of vehicles ) .

Is this a common occurrence in these engines ? need to be searched &
reported to the company ( but who is going to do this )

btw do you have pics of the complete assembly (dismantled parts ) ?

Sudarshan

Re: Mahindra Thar - *Converted* Independent Front Suspension to Solid Axle

Dear Sudarshan / Fazal and Jaskirat - can I please see some photographs of the oil sump of this vehicle as it came out after the oil pump gear broke. This part is same as Scorpio, used in regular production in very large numbers. I would also like to see the engine-axle interface closeups in full jounce condition.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Dear Behram Sir,
I will ask Karan to post some pictures of the sump. As per his initial feedback, the sump was not damaged, but we will wait for the pictures. I will also try and get you the engine-axle interface close-up. Simulating full bounce would be bit of a challenge.

I am posting a picture, which I had shared earlier. Engine-axle interface looks quite fine. Under full bounce, the axle should move further away from the sump.

Regards, Jaskirat

Re: Mahindra Thar - *Converted* Independent Front Suspension to Solid Axle

Hi Guys,

Yesterday, Karan and his Thar participated in OYA Autocross and Off-roading Challenge. Needless to say, he won the event in his modified Thar.

Re: Mahindra Thar - *Converted* Independent Front Suspension to Solid Axle

No one to comment on why the plastic material was used for that gear in the pump?

Re: Mahindra Thar - *Converted* Independent Front Suspension to Solid Axle

To add to this thread of the past, saw one Thar crde front removed and changed to 550 ngcs solid OKBJs and Rane type RCBT power steering using the same Hydraulic oil pump. looked like a neat job done by one jeep builder of Moga.

plastic gears are not new to industry. They are liked for their light weight, low noise, ease of manufacturing and price. they aren't too bad either for low torque transmission jobs.

Amazing build so far, looking forward to having a few more updates on this. It would be great if you can post the latest pictures on the rig.
