Hi Friends , I am a new member and i have bought a used 96 Model Maruti Gypsy hardtop. Currently i am converting it into a 5 door all steel including the top and i intend to put a diesel turbo in it. I am thinking of the Toyota 1N turbo 1500 cc or the Peugeot TUD5 that the Accent DLS uses. I am not worried about diesel endorsement because i intend to use it through and through, where there are no roads!!! (real offroader).

I am currently driving a Bolero and the mileage is very poor only 7kpl in the forests and most places i have to walk because it can't take me everywhere i need to go. I drive on an average 250 km per day and almost 200 days a year. The sole reason for prefering a diesel on the Gypsy.

I intend to use the same Gypsy gearboxes and can any of you please help me foretell the problems i am supposed to encounter reg gear ratios and engine specs and solutions to them if any. Thanks guys.

the engine you are planning to put are intented to be use in a small car like a zen palio and at the max ikon

a gypsy will require a minimum of a 2c engine or a nissan 4l engine and if you car get i would suggest a 3c engine it will make the gypsy a rocket

have driven a gypsy will all the three above mentioned engines and would strongly suggest a 3c engine

as per the gear box it can surely be used by using a plate in between the engine and the gear box

You won't be able to take the gypsy to many places too simply because your mods will make it a 2WD and not 4WD.
Most diesel transplants make the gypsy a 2WD.

What diesels CAN be swapped into it without losing the 4WD?

I don't think any of the commonly available diesels can be swapped into the gypsy without losing 4WD.
Thats the reason all diesel gypsies are 2WD

That is my understanding also but I hope I am wrong.

I would advice you to try the Toyota 1N turbo. Getting a plate to match the original gearbox to this would be possible. In Chennai a lot of people used to do this conversion after removing 4wd.
DO NOT LET THE MECHANIC CHANGE THE GEARBOX or remove the 4wd. You CAN retain 4wd with this arrangement and would also be the most reliable.
The Toyota 1N is a transverse engine and hence you would need to get yourself an electrically operated radiator fan.
The IN turbo has enough power to propel the gypsy quite well.
It is also a very smooth and quiet engine.
If you do a lot of highway driving, try and source the Gypsy king gearbox. This will give you a 5th gear. The Gypsy 1.0 gearbox will handle the off-road sessions well too.
The original gearbox cannot handle a more powerful engine.

The MG410/413 are the easiest vehicles to convert to diesel and retain 4WD.

That is because the MG410/413 has a divorced/split transfer case, e.g the engine gearbox combinations is connected to the T-Case via a short propeller shaft (3-4inches).

Depending on the length of the new engine gearbox (longitudinal mounting) the TCase maybe be pushed back and the front and rear propeller shaft lengths adjusted.

Ah! Sounds like you have researched this a bit. What diesel motor(s) would you consider? Are there adapter plates available? A Gypsy with 4WD with a good sized diesel could be spectacular.

A few Toyota Engines have been Swapped with the rear wheel drive gearbox.

1) 1C - 1839cc 58@4500 78Nm@2800
2) 1CT - 1839cc
3) 2C - 1974cc 73@4700 98Nm@3000
4) 2CT - 1974cc 88@4500 123Nm@2400
5) 1N - SOHC - 1453cc 54@5200 67Nm@3000
6) 1NT - 1453 67@4700 96Nm@2600

I have seen 1C,2C & 1N fitted in Gypsy's without the 4WD because they did not know about the Transfer Case and in most cases did not require it.

The MG410 1000cc engine generates 70Nm torque @ 3300rpm
MG413 1300cc engine generates 100Nm torque @ 3000rpm

keeping these in mind I would suggest the 2CT then the 2C.

Boy, he sure needs wider rubber to make that lift job look good.
