Welcome to the jeep club and congrats on getting a neat mm540 a quite capable and mean machine and good luck restoring it .
A word of caution though as often pointed out by many jeep enthusiast ,go for only whats require ,I mean never go whole hog .One needs to get a feel of the jeep then start work on it.
You are doing the right thing by starting with the tinkering work.

Guys,
It seems the tinkering work is nearly completed, says the Mechanic!
Waiting for installing the Windshield frame. My bro paid some advance for the mechanic to buy the same from around JC Road. He may buy install in a day or two.
The Hart top frame is removed as instructed to mechanic.

waiting for a NEW Top! DAMN still awaiting for the Registration No, which is still in progress!


List of things to do (with expected cost) before On Road Test!
1. New Battery - PZ 900 MF ~ 5300
2. Soft Top ~ 5500
3. Engine Oil: ~1400
4. Air Filter: ~350
5. Diesel Filter: ~150
6. Oil Filter: ~300
7. Greasing all four hubs

Sorry for Back to Back post, but I was unable to upload the PIC for unknown reason!

One question guys - There seem to be some kinda support missing for the back seat bottom supporting rods, Any clues?

^^ No supporting rods come there.
Just two rubber bushes. Get two pairs of Bolero's stabilizer bar bushes. That will do.
And, why does the body appear to be tilted. Are they replacing the body mounting bushes too?

^^ Support rods are usually found near the end of seat overhangs (45-45" seats).

The above list is what I did to my vehicle. You might also want to add, checking the bearings, and recamber the leaf springs, and changing the bushes, if needed.

Also, what did you do with the HT?

Umm.. in my Jeep, there is an extra rod along the middle, and a couple of bushes. But everything else remains same.

^^ The one shown above is not an OE seat AFAIK, the backrest and frame looks different.

Hi Spike,

These Rear Sets are pre-550 design. They are very good at shaking loose and rattling.

These were even used in the Earlier CJ500Ds.

Hi Dhanush; That is indeed a cut+paste of your list! As posted earlier Iam closely following your thread to get the JEEP on track for run in condition first !

Hi All,

Got the new regn. number. Tinkering work completed, All Mechnaicals done and jeep is now in running condition.
Oil Filter - Rs.165
Diesel Filter - Rs. 185
Engine Oil (6 litres) - Rs.1410/-
Grease - Rs.125/-
Hub Greasing - Rs.350/-
Oil Servicing - Rs. 200/-

Day one after mechanicals took a round within city for about 50kms, noted the following :
1) Front wheel Wobbling - Wheel alignment done, however we asked him to do the wheel balancing, but guy said the rating is 145 & 175 which was abnormal hence he suggested/recommended that tyres need to be changed. To our surpise all the tyres looks good, but after going thro' old threads and found out the following :

Of course there is a problem. Rubber is an elastomer and will change its properties when exposed to air, heat and other factors, even when not in use.

The tyre will be degraded and safety will become an issue. The rubber often hardens and the steel inside them will corrode making them dangerous on the roads

For now planning to use the same tyres for some time. Meanwhile need a recommendation on suitable tyres with no / or minimum modifications.

2) Noted minor oil leak from Transfer case (hope, but not sure) - planning to get the oil seals and other stuff checked by mechanic

3) Temparature guage - Throughout the day the guage will be around 80, however when the headlight is on it will bounce to 120 (suspect the guage may be fault).

Day 2:
Had been on a long drive (around 225 kms) found exhaust leakage and got it welded from a road side mechanic.
On our return journey we found couple of Garages modifying jeeps exclusively for borewell installations. These modified jeeps will be used to drop/lifting the GI pipes & motors. Most of the jeeps are sourced by these people in and around Bangalore.
upon hunting with few of these garages able to find a back door for our MM540 and procured.

4WD conversion in being planned in a phased manner. first would like to get all the mechanical works of 2WD and drive around for sometime!

First check if its the "death wobble", then its time to attend to the king pin. Basically ensure steering system is fine before blaming it on the tyre.
