the 30 spline semi floating is bullet proof.. current heavy duty pickup from mahindra is running it :)

I would agree with sturdy but bullet proof is a stretch. I live in Ooty, and I have seen many of these pick ups on it side.

Sreejesh and other experts, I want to know if it is difficult to source the front shaft for NGCS MM550 (with NGT520). I am in need of one. Any hints what I should be asking in Automobile stores ?

Also since it is said that NGT530 is improved version of NGT520. Will the front shaft length remain same for both ?

Dear Sad - NGT 530 and NGT520 are completely different transmissions, please go below the vehicles and see naa! :D.

Torque carrying capacity of NGT530 is more than that of NGT520, therefore NEF / mHawk engined vehicles have NGT530 only. NGT530R (currently used with tunnel casing) is a derivative of the NGT530 (split casing) which itself is derived out of the Peugeot BA10 of 1981, which was originally used by Peugeot on their J9 vans with remote shift.

I purchased a MM550 NGCS recently, I am totally new to this Jeep thing :) and it is just the begining phase for me. I am gathering all the useful information(theory) that Team BHP has to offer.

I was in a situation where I got a front drive shaft but later realized that is too short for the MM550 NGCS that I have. That was mainly because the gearbox housing of NGT520 (it is much longer). So I wanted to know if any other Mahindra models front shaft can be used. If i can get a bolero or scorpio or Thar or any other model front drive shaft and fit it directly.

I will try to go below some of the vehicles with a measurement tape to check if the shaft length match :)
This would be easy if i join in on OTRs. Getting below the vehicle parked on street would be dangerous..

Dear Sada - I presume you mean "front propeller shaft". Please let me know what engine you are running on your MM550 NGCS. 99% it will be MDI3200, then Thar DI propeller shaft should slot in perfectly because MDI3200 / NGT520 layout is common. If you are running XD3, then you may be running NGT530 and not NGT520. Do post some photographs, it will help me to decide.

If you have a shaft thats few inches short, just cut it and make it longer by welding a steel pipe of same dia. Any lathe/mechanic can do it for you. Lathe - because they can maintain the trueness of the pipe, any bend will cause wobbling and failure of few important stuff.

I was under assumption the it is a XD3 engine with NGT520. I will update pics to clarify.

I was also suggested that the shaft can be cut and extended, but i doubt how reliable that would be. That would be the last option for me.

I actually wanted to start a new thread on my MM550, but since I have brought it, I am hardly finding any time to start up a thread.

BA10 is the only option I have now to put a 30 spline center offset axle. or I may put NGT530 and continue R&D to make a Manuel shift BW.

Both are different GB uses Different TC so length may change.
Don't do cut and weld on Shaft. NGT530 never came on army NGCS.

Here are some pictures from below the vehicle. As Srejeesh said about NGCS, it is a NGT520 gearbox..and here the pics of the engine. I measured the length of the propeller shaft from the diff to the TC it measures approx 77cm or 30 inch. Does this fit to any other mahindra vehicles from propeller shaft ?

Sreejesh Ji,
IIRC NGT520/530 have center offset rear output or i am missing anything ?
Also during my hunt for chain drive SZ+ engine, one of engine dealer told me that all gear drive and chain drive engines came with BA10 only, is it correct or dealer is taking me for a ride ?

Dear Shubhendra - SZ+ or NEF (new engine family) engine came in Scorpio. Scorpio came with NGT530 transmission till 2007, then it came with NGT530R transmission. Both NGT530 and NGT530R are derivatives of the BA10 transmission only. I don't think dealer has explained you properly. You can use either NGT530 or NGT530R because both have the torque carrying capacity to match the NEF engine, but please ensure that you use the direct shift version. BA10s with remote shift versions are also floating around the various chor bazaars, don't get conned. Best is to remove the complete drivetrain from a total loss Scorpio.

By the way, don't buy the gear drive engine at all, you will be inviting trouble forever, the gears get worn out very quickly. They also make a lot of noise! Gear drive engine does not have separate power steering pump, that way you can visually differentiate.

I was eagerly waiting for you to pitch in. Let me tell you my problem statement:
I have Bolero LX (XD3P, AC+PS, BA-10 GB with manual shifter borg warner transfer case), as per Odometer it has run more than 1.6 lac kms and as per last owner engine has never been overhauled. though i have replaced fuel pump and vehicle is as of now working fine but i am anticipating engine overhaul in near future. after listening so many horror stories of XD3P builds and personally seen them, i am not very convinced to rebuild this engine. I am also not looking for everyone's favorite Di TC engine as i dont want that noisy engine which can not even touch speed of 100 +. What option you suggest for my bolero ?
I want a vehicle which can do 110 + throughout the day, should have Mahindra engine with torque to help me in offroad OTRs as well. BTW, i am using another XD3P bolero and other than pathetic performance on highway it can do almost everything which Thar does ( keeping in mind the LWB of vehicle) :p

best option , buy a total loss scorpio with the sz+ engine and the NGT 530 GB. swap the rear housing ,the main shaft and the transfer case of the BA10 onto the NGT 530..

Presto you have 4wd NGT530.. This is what allan adn beboy did on their builds..


i would also recommend using the rear diff off the scorpio as well

Now you have a bullet proof truck :)

This is what i have in my mind, but i was inclined to gear drive SZ engine due to lack of vitamin M. Is gear drive engine is so bad not worth the effort ?

What is the advantage of rear diff of scorpio ?
