MM550 XDP - Found it. GO or NO-GO? (Now bought MM540)

Hello All,

I managed to find an Army spec MM550 XDP in v.good condition. Saw the jeep at around 7 PM so, no photos yet.

Jeep is a 2004 model, 4WD.
The current owner has done the engine work( rebore and other work) in the last week due to compression issues and showed me the expense bills for 36K.
The Jeep is in Original condition, repainted with Military Green color, tyres are in good condition, almost new spare tyre. I guess these are of the stock tyre types.

The owner is asking for 3Lakhs.

Please let me know if this is a fair price or what price point will be a Go No-Go price point?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Scion,
Please post pics for evaluation! Considering that it is a mint piece, it all depends on how inclined are you to buy it. 3 lakhs is on a bit higher side to me.
regards

Hi Vinod, I guess it is with the new chasis design and many other changes from the post 2003 models. Were MM550s available in market in 2004??

Price is excellent for the 2004 vintage !!

Is it pre-registered ? Better make sure or else you will go to hell and back and will still not be able to !

I am not sure if 2004 have started hitting the aucitons yet. Most jeeps that I see in auctions are from 1999 2000. You may want to check if this is indeed the army version and yes the army versions are 550XD. As Major had pointed out the 5-speeds started coming only post 2007.

I think the five gear 550 with new box chassis were introduced around 2004 in army. Disposal vehicles normally come after 7 years in service. Though accidental vehicles are some times disposed early. But this is the first time I am hearing a 2004 model. If it is 2004 model with five gears and new chassis than 2.5 lakh would be a decent price provided everything is in great shape in the jeep.

cheers

2004 Amry auctioned jeep??

Guys,
  • Havent seen/heard of any vehicle later then 2002
  • Nor did Mahindra retailed it for the civilian Market...
  • If its an accident case, do check the body and chassis for faults. Plus it makes 3Lacs too high a quote and strict no go

MM550 XDP - Found it. GO or NO-GO?

Hello All,

First off, Sorry for not responding all these days, I have been travelling in India and now back in US.

@whiteMM550: I'm sorry, didn't see your PM to me earlier, just now saw it. I guess its too late now.

Reg MM550: I was not able to take the photos of the Jeep, however, I did verified the year in the plate inside the cab. It indeed was a 2004 year make with 4 speed gear box. Army auctioned the jeep due to an accident (fell into a deep trench), seems the chassis got damaged and they junked it. It has been restored, the seller didn't even budge a single buck on price for negotiations. Boy the jeep was like a lorry in size.

Now the interesting part: I was able to spot and buy an excellent to Mint condition 4WD MM540.
Year: 1995
Number of owners: 1
Paint: Grey Original Stock
Aircondition: Yes
Mechanical Condition: Very Good
Suspension condition: Very Good
Body Conditon: Perfect original
Gear Box: 4 speed
Engine: Peugeot
No. of Kms: 1,58,000 - Original
Engine Rebore: Yes, 1 time
Overall Condition: Excellent
Ride Quality: Awesome, like a car abeit diesel engine noise, other than that, no squeeks or what so ever.
Tires: all 4 are retread tires, needs to be replaced very soon.

Problems identified:
1. 4 Low won't engage
2. 1st Gear engage noise...sounds like a bus! grrrr noise..
Local mechanic says, clutch assembly, pressure plate et all needs to be changed.

Would problems 1 & 2 be tied together and will be gone when clutch work is done?

Hi Scion,

The first problem will definitely get solved once the clutch job is done. I too had similar problems in my 540 (first and reverse)and we had to adjust the clutch travel periodically. Finally we had to the clutch and pressure plate gave way and we had to change it. After that, I never had this problem.

As far as the second issue goes, it should be solved with the clutch thing but am not too sure.

Gurus please suggest.

Thanks and regards

Congratulations Scion, I think changing the clutch set should take care of the problems you are facing. And yes the beast looks beautiful
