The Joyride- My MM550

Hi, I recently bought a MM 550 from fellow NIOC Jeeper. It is a 2001 Model Army disposable, fully restored by Sanjeev Singh. I have done few NIOC OTRs and few local OTRs in it and am very satisfied by its offroad performance so far. The highway performance is also much better than my previous CL340. I have named it 'Joyride'.

Some pics from yesterday's NIOC OTR in Manesar.

Thanks Josh, actually this has been restored exactly as per the specs of stock Army Jeep. Why would the cops catch for that or will they??

The jeep was build in Delhi, I assume that there won't be much trouble to find these hinges. The seller said that the condition of the auctioned jeep was good and it till has a big portion of original Army paint on it..

Few more pics about a month old, I had uploaded them in the jeep pic thread too:

Ym-enjn, the Jeep bug bit you again, eh?! Congrats...she looks very clean and purposeful. Vis a vis the 340, how do you find it off the road?

Congratulations for the Naming ceremony of your jeep and thats a very good name "Joyride" well suited too. The 550 actually gives you immense joy while riding it, specially Off the Road. I have got the same colour 550 and love driving it more then anything else.

Yeah! well said "a jeeper will always remain a jeeper" no other machine gives you the same feel except the Jeep. I love MM550 XD, I am living for the day when I will have one for me. touch wood it should happen to me. Nice idea of fooling cops, why would you do so, have all the docs in place no one can even touch you dude. Enjoy your joyride to the fullest, congratulations.

Thanks GTO dude! I have been evaluating its performance vis a vis CL340 and would love to share my views. As always there are few advantages and few disadvantages and few things are same.

* Ground Clearance- CL340 with smaller wheel base seems to be in advantage but in reality a 550 with such tall tyres has higher ground clearance hence giving somewhat similar break over angle, never had any problem in 550. There is no lack of approach or departure angle in both. With net higher ground clearance (MM550 260mm)gets more scope.

* The 550 has somewhat better articulation, which is, their wheel can flex more than the 340 and it rarely raise a leg. I can do difficult things without worrying about getting stuck in 550, whereas the 340 would get stuck sooner than 550.

* Long climbs: The weight of 550 is far more than 340 and you feel the effect on climbs. It is very difficult and almost impossible to do long climbs on sand hills with 550, whereas the 340 would zoom past with a bit of hassle.

* Body role: There is more body role in 550 but due to long wheel base and wider track you do not feel any difference in offroad capabilities. The center of gravity of 340 feels lower and is an advantage and provokes confidance.

*Gear Ratio: In Cl340 the low gear was needed at very few places and don’t remember if I ever needed to use first low gear. Whereas in 550 I move in to low gear quite often and use First-low gear also at many obstacle. In 550 sometimes I shift direct to 4x4 low from 4x2 mode as per need. The 4x2 mode does much more than the 340. May be due to LSD.

*You can feel more power in 550. Its engine is bigger and one can feel it many times.

* 550 has gate and windows which make it a safe drive and it can accommodate more people but at the same time has more things to take care of. Something or other makes chu-chu noise on hitting potholes.

* 550 is much better on highway. More comfortable at higher speeds.

So overall it is a square game. 550 with more GC, more articulation and more power is a rock solid offroader safe and spacious and in 340 you can play more, its peppier, stylish with equally great offroad abilities.

Totally agree, it gives immense joy. Me too, I love driving this one too much. I was thinking it was due to the honeymoon period.

The color can save toll tax at few places but still I like to pay as I would not like to take the privilege as of our great Army men without serving the nation like they do. Hope you get one soon too..

It was a great day. Everything was going as planned. The OTR, Rafting, cooking... Then suddenly on the highway while return (see last pics)

Idea of the day was to fill air in raft through the exhaust of Jeep.. and it worked very well. Within seconds the raft was full of hot air.. :

Just a while back we were doing 90 kmph when the power to the wheels got disconnected. I tried to pull but wheels got very hard. We pulled to side with difficulty. When I got down to check I got the shock of my life..
