2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands

The weekend of 24th & 25th of August saw the 2019 Concours d’Elegance in the Netherlands. This concours has been running a good number of years. It always manages to attract an eclectic variety of classic cars. As with many of these classic car events it has, over the years, moved from just very exclusive classic cars to a more overal classic car and life style sort of happening. Even so, as you will see, the concours d’elegance part remains very special! But you will see modern day cars and even some concept cars too.

If anything this formula seems to be working. I can honestly say, that as classic cars events go, this one by far, has the most diverse audience in terms of gender and age. As you will see in some of the photographs. Compare that with some of the other classic car events I have reported on. 95% of the audiences are (white) male of at least 50 years of age!

This year the organisation had changed hands and also the location was new. For the past decade the Concours was held at the Palace het Loo. A very nice location too.

However, this year for the first time it was held at the Palace Soestdijk. For most Dutch people, certainly my generation, Palace Soestdijk will always be remembered as the official Royal Residence of our queen Juliana and husband Prince Bernard. And her mum lived here as well.

I remember my dad taking us to Paleis Soestdijk, when we were very small, to celebrate what is known as “Queens Day” (her birthday). There used to be a so called “defile” where the public would pass round the palace entrance and greet and congratulate the queen.

I have visited the previous Concours d”elegance at Palace het Loo at least 4-5 times over the years.

More importantly, this year, I actually participated! Not at the concours d’elegance itself, but on the National Concours, held at the same time and venue. More about this later.

Just as a first flavour what to expect. The line up of the Concours d’Elegance Classic cars.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-octane-3.jpeg

Interested? Well, the good news is, in numbers the Concours d”elegance cars make up less than 20% of the total cars on display! But they are of course, top of the line!

Notice how the overview shows a separate column for mode and coach builder? In the early motoring days, the coach could/would be build by a specialist company and put on the chassis!

Here an overview of the total venue

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-octane-1.jpeg

Area B is right smack in front of the Palace entry and that’s where all the Concours d’elegance cars were displayed. Area A is where all cars for the National Concours were displayed. My car, my 1982 Mercedes W123 was parked right at the bottom of the red arrow that says “ingang paleis” (palace entry)

Below the list of entries to the National Concours. More on this later. This was a preliminary list I received about a week before the event.
2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-octane-2.jpeg

Area C was all about Citroen, it celebrated its 100 year anniversary.

The event lasted two full days. Let’s start on how I was invited to participate.

I need to travel a lot, almost every week I find myself at airports. And I like to read magazines on the flight. So prior to every trip I always stock up on my favourite magazines. Those of you who have followed me on this forum will have come to recognise my particular interests. (Classic) Cars, Aviation, Photography. So I end up buying a lot of magazines. I rarely buy Dutch magazines, I prefer the English ones. Some of my favourite magazines are only available in English. On some I just prefer the orginal. (E.g. the UK Topgear versus the Dutch Topgear).

One of the magazines I often buy is Octane. An interesting magazine, filled with lots of classic cars stuff, but also touches upon some modern car development. As long is it special, unique and to do with cars, old or new, it is likely to end up in this magazine. About two months ago, when at the airport the UK Octane version was sold out, so I got myself the Dutch version.

Which had an interesting article from chief editor Ton Roks. He announced the Dutch Octane organisation would be hosting a national car concours at this very event. The idea being to bring some more mainstream classic cars, more affordable classics to the show. There would be five categories and readers were invited to contact Ton. I mailed Ton from the airport with some information on my W123, which I thought would do well in the category Family and Station wagens.

Two hours later I had a reply confirming my car was entered into the National Concours! Which meant I had some serious cleaning, washing and waxing to do.

You can read up on the various jobs I did on my W123 (and my other cars) prepping it for the concours. A number of big and small jobs from replacing window seals to dry ice blasting of the engine compartment! And a lot of washing, polishing and waxing

About a week before the event I received a package with detailled information on the venue, the program, wrist tags etc. The organiser preferred to have all cars on the venue by Friday evening. But they also made arrangement for the last cars to arrive Saturday morning. You had to be inside the gates before 08.30. Which meant getting up at 06.00AM in the morning. By 06.45AM I hit the motorway. I had booked a little hotel close by the venue, dropped of my travel bags and entered the venue by 07.30. The weather forecast was excellent. If anything a little too warm. Temperatures would be reaching 30oC. Anything over 23-24oC and most Dutch will start jumping into canals, river or head for a beach. Still, both days a good turn out crowd wise, without it ever getting too busy! Sunday being quite a bit busier than Saturday. Which is how these things tend to work in the Netherlands. Saturdays are busy days for Dutch familie. Chores to do, shopping, kids need to go to their sports club etc. But on Sunday many people go out for the day. (Unless you live where we do, in the Dutch bible belt, things stay very quiet on a Sunday)

My guess was about 90% of the cars were already in place early Saturday morning. Caught a nice reflection of the palace on my bonnet!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240062.jpg

I will not keep the suspense any longer. My car did not win any prices. The VW Beetle next to my W123 took first price in our class. The owner, a guy in his early thirties had saved for many years to buy a nice Beetle. He paid Euro 6000 for it, some 6 years ago. It has never been restored, but he has just made endless little improvements to it. The judges loved it and especially all the accessories. He had brought a record player which sat of the passenger front seat and he was playing a bunch of old Beatles LPs. Very nice! Well earned first place!

So here we go with lots of images of cars, details of cars and impressions on what to see and do.

Day One:

This is or rather was a real Royal Palace. It was customary to fly the Dutch flag when the queen was home. The flag pole is empty, but you can still see the Royal crown at the very top!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240006.jpg

Just to stay on the Royal theme. This Rolls Royce used to belong to the Royal family. Many Dutch of my generation will have seen it with the Queen and Prince being chauffeured around the Netherlands

It was purposed build and had some special options.

The Royal Crest

These radio dials should have gotten a special price. Never seen anything like it. You can almost hear the Queen say to the Prince: Be a dear, turn the Royal volume up a tad please!

A nice statue of the Royal couple is still present at the front of garden

The sort of cars you come across this event is from the very early days of motoring to the latest, including concept car. (more on this later)

This was one of the oldest car on the venue and also A London - Brighton veteran

A BMW 503 Coupe, from the time BMW (and many other cars) were still drop dead gorgeous looking:

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240015.jpg

As you will notice, looking at all these images, some very rare, unique cars. Some cost an absolute fortune, some are just nice hobby cars, for very ordinary folks. This Fiat comes into that latter category. Very rare these days, but very cheap.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240016.jpg

Not so cheap, a little less rare than the Fiat, a Citroen DS Cabriolet

The field in front of the palace had just about completely filled with gorgeous cars

re: 2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands

After having put my car in it’s designated slot, I fiddled with it a bit. Brought a box full of wax, glass cleaner, polishing cloth etc. You were allowed to work on your car till 10.00 o’clock, the official opening time of the show. I decided to take a tour of the palace estate and garden whilst still early morning.

You can still see the early morning dew on some of the cars.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240031.jpg

This was one of the most photographed cars of the show. The car is the so-called Gatso Platje. But apart from this being a rare and special car, the setting of this car, at the far end of the garden on the edge of the pond, looking back to the rear of the palace makes for a magnificent and very special view.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240032.jpg

Further down the gardens, still wet and partialy in the shade a Ford GT40. The modern version. Jeremy Clarkson owned one and it features in one of the old TopGear specials. Jeremy talks about it on some of the other TG shows as well. One day he experienced some problems and Ford dispatched an engineer with parts and it was fixed on the spot. Apparently, that was a regular service for GT40 owners.

The car still looks close to the original, legendary GT40. One important difference, this one will fit tall guys like Jeremy and me. No way we could fit in the original.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240033.jpg

And now for something completely different. A Ferrari shooting brake. I leave it up to individual taste and opinion whether you like it or not.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240035.jpg

Not quite sure what the story was on this nice looking fire engine. It was quite small, almost looked like a toy. The Fiat club in force in the background. Behind the Fiat the Fehac. The Fehac is a sort of umbrella organization for classic car clubs. So not individual classic car owners, but classic car clubs are members. They promote classic car ownership, lobby towards government and regulators in order to facilitate keeping classic cars on the road.

They organize all sorts of workshop and seminars. I have attended many of those. I used to represent the Alfa Romeo Spider Register. Somehow I am still on their mailing list and nobody seems to mind if I show up as an individual these days, rather than representing a classic car club. Had a little chat with them, met up with some folks I used to work with on some of the legislation we were promoting at the time

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240037.jpg

This one is pretty neat, an amphibious car. Not to many of these car around. The concepts, whilst intrinsically cool, never caught on big time. There were also some practical problems. They never managed to keep the cars completely water tight, so you had the bilge pump running constantly. A bit unnerving for some.

They actually sailed this one across the Royal pond during these two days!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240040.jpg

Still relatively early in the morning, look at that beautiful light. This event is very much promoted as a family event and you will see many mum and dads and their offspring. Various kid activities, these cool pedal cars being one of them. Free of charge

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240042.jpg

I will be honest. I did take a few photographs of the Tesla stand, but I did not stop and have a close look. It's fine if this is the future of the car industry, but as long as there are non electrical cars to admire I will be spending my time doing just that.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240045.jpg

One of my favorites, a Bentley blower! I lost count but there must have been at least 6-7 of these. I met up with the owner and his grand son at my hotel on Sunday morning. Also, some of these participated in a handicap run. These cars are very impressive if not to say imposing on the road. Lovely sound too. Typical Bentley blowers are a breed apart. They all follow in the foot steps of the original Bentley Boys. Hard core drivers enthusiasts. These Bentley get driven all over Europe. Not unusual to see them on the road. Two years ago I was parked next to one on the Hoek of Holland - Harwich overnight ferry.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240047.jpg

Some more hardware sort of from the Bentley Blower era. All were driven on the obstacle course I will show later

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240048.jpg

Louwman was one of the big sponsors of this event. Many people will know Louwman for its magnificent car museum on the border of The Hague.
(see https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/beyon...therlands.html (Louwman Car Museum @ Hague, Netherlands) )

But Louwman is also the largest car importer of the Netherlands. They import and deal in various brands, Mazda being one. So they brought a few modern Mazda's for the first day

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240050.jpg

There were quite a few very nice Peugeots to be seen. This is a lovely 504 Coupe. All Peugeot 504 are rare these days, but the coupe is the rarest of them all. Nice V6 engine, electronic ignition. Pininfarina coach design, of course

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240053.jpg

One of the themes, next to the concour d'elegance and the national concour was the 100st anniversary of Citroen. So plenty of Citroens were about.

A 2CV (Deux Chevaux), a DS and an Ami. Still early morning, before 10.00 as some cars are still covered up.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240055.jpg

A very fine line up of cars. These stairs are well known to all Dutch folks, specifically those of my generation. The queen and her family would stand at the top of these stairs as hundreds/thousands of Dutch ordinary folks walked by, greeted and congratulated her on her birthday.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240057.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240058.jpg

Another contender in my class, family and stationwagon. A very smart Renault 25. This was one of the very early ones. It still had the original electronic dashboard. Early on that was replaced by a more traditional dashboard. Too many problems with the electronics prompted Renault to replace it. It had very little mileage and was in near new condition.

I owned a Renault 25 for a short while. Phenomenal car. Very comfortable car, blistering fast.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240060.jpg

You will notice that all cars entered into the National Concours have this A4 info sheet on it. All participants were requested to do a little write up on their cars. Octane edited it and made these information cards. One for each car. Here is mine, all in Dutch I am afraid. It details some of the technical aspects of the car, maintenance and restoration history. And I also mentioned it had participated twice in the Book of World Records attempt to have the most W123 on the road. Twice we broke the record! ( https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/inter...23-parade.html (Drive: From Netherlands to Germany for the longest Mercedes W123 parade) )

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240059.jpg

Now for something a little more contemporary and modern. This thing was absolutely huge. It did draw a lot of attention, but I am not sure if anybody really liked it. It is impressive, but that is about it. I think it looks like a rejected prop from a Batman movie.

re: 2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands

Still early Saturday morning. Nice line up of some of the National Concours cars.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240063.jpg

The yellow nose peeping out is an Alfa Romeo Spider, series 2 or Coda Tronca. It was a nicely restored car. Not many cars that can get away with this sort of bright yellow, but I always thought the Alfa Spider looks good in it.

At the far end you see a little tent. This was the "home base" for all of Octane crew and all National Concours participants. It was nicely situated in permanent shade. Which was great as temperatures rose to 33oC during the afternoon. The Octane crew took very good care of us. There was a steady stream of free coffee, tea, waters, sandwiches, snacks and some other unmentionable drinks in the afternoon.

You did have to pay to participate though! Euro 25 per car. For that you got entrance to the venue for 2 persons for the full two days, and use of the Octane facilities. And you got to put your car on display, and possible win a price. (Which I regrettable did not).

Regular ticket prices for the show are for adults Euro 20 per day. To put that in some sort of Dutch perspective. Your typical cinema ticket will cost Euro 10. But then, this total event is heavily advertised and promoted, through various channels and different media. Just about all classic car clubs in the Netherlands will have received special club arrangements, which usually means their member get a Euro 2-3 discount on the normal ticket price.

As part of the show they also ask visitors to bring their own classic car. A special dedicated, free of charge, classic car parking lot is part of the venue. Not quite sure how many cars can be parked there, probably 400-500 and it is a sight to behold. Have a look at this little video I took. It gives a good impression of the classic car scene in the Netherlands. From the very ordinary to the quite special. When you look at this little video, bear in mind that the classic car parking lot had 7 of these aisles! So I am showing a very small sample of visitor classic cars only!

Back to the main event. A gorgeous Citroen DS, cabriolet. The DS has always had strong followers and enthusiast. It is a loverly car. Very advanced it's days of course. Lovely to drive. The soft top cabrio are considered to be amongst the most desirable ones.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240064.jpg

More Pininfarina design at this show than you can shake a stick at. A Fiat, next to it a Mercedes W107. There were at least 6-8 of these about in the show and quite a few in the classic car parking lot. This Mercedes is a very popular Classic soft top. You can get yourself a nice one for about Euro 30.000. Really good ones will be double that easily. Remarkably, it is the later versions that are the most sought after, rather than the early series. Easy to work on and restore, parts availability is very good too.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240065.jpg

Two somewhat unlikely contenders in the National Concours. Both these cars had quite a story with them. Both had been found after many years of neglect. The Karmann Ghia was used in banger races, before being “restored” to its present condition. Not really my sort of thing. Although the owners of these sort of cars, usually have some great stories to tell. It does not come easy, nor cheap to restore and keep a car in this condition.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240066.jpg

A Peugeot 604. This one was competing in the same category as my Mercedes W123, family and stationwagon. To be very honest, I did not agree with that. Because this was not your typical family car at the time at all. It was a very luxurious, CEO owner type of car. Even so, it is a nice car, this one belonged to the second owner. He inherited it from his dad, who bought it from new and put very little mileage on it. It was immaculate!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240067.jpg

A bit of an impression, still early in the morning. Still a lot of shade here. That would change during morning and afternoon. Blazing Sunshine. Lots of folks strolling around the grounds, admiring, discussing the cars. Kids running around. Every 100 meters there was an ice cream stand. Lots of ice cream was consumed on both days!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240069.jpg

This car was placed conspicuously right smack in front of the Octane base camp. For good reasons. It is a Spijker Double 12S. It featured in a five page spread in last month issue. Whether you like this sort of style or not, it is a remarkable car. Spijker is one of the most successful automotive brands of the Netherlands. But that was a long time ago. In those days they were also involved in aviation. It shows in its logo and the "aircraft like riveting" on this Spijker too. Of course, current Spijker has nothing to do with the old original Spijker. It was just some (initially Dutch) investors who bought the rights to the brand. Over the last years, it has not been without some controversy. The company struggled financially and at one time, some very shady (Russian) investors got involved.

Still, a remarkable car!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240220.jpg

This car was also just in front of the Octane base camp. It also won a price. Very well deserved too. You are looking at a fully restored original Donkervoort. One of the very first two cars, Joop Donkervoort build himself decades ago. This one was in very poor condition when the current owner bought it. He took it back to Donkervoort and they restored it to its original glory. Really unique! Joop himself (pushing 70+) was present during the price award ceremony. I had the pleasure of spending a day with him several decades ago. I had called him to get some brochures on his cars. We are talking mid-80s or so. We ended up talking for about half an hour or so. He told me to come to his workshop the next Saturday. He was going to show around a small group of industrial architects and engineers around and I could join. Very interesting day, very interesting guy. He is your typical entrepreneur/inventor. he build his company from the ground up. And he can talk for hours on any little detail of his cars.

Very happy to see one of his very first car, so nicely restored, overseen by the great man himself.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240071.jpg

Lets look at some more cars. Sure I can take images of whole cars, but I just love the details on some of these cars. What Fiat is this you reckon?

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240077.jpg

Couple of Bentleys. There were loads of these kind of Bentleys around. Legendary cars, legendary owners.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240079.jpg

As the morning passes, more and more cars get in the full sun light. Look at this line up. On the left, a very nice Jenssen. It went on to win a price in the concours d’Elegance. More about that later. On the right a Ferrari, a BMW M1 and a De Lorean.

Notice that none of these cars have barriers or ropes around them? Everybody can just roam around all these cars. There were the odd “please do not touch” sign, but by and large all cars just stood there and anybody, young and old could just get not just within inches, but within millimetres if they wanted to. I really like this, no barriers, just people, not being stupid, not touching, just looking at gorgeous cars!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240080.jpg

A slightly different perspective. The photographer in me is always on the look out for “see-though”.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240082.jpg

A tremendous line up of some quite rare hardware in excellent nick!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240086.jpg

Another Citroen. This one, with a bit of Royal provenance! This car was ordered and specially modified for our Royal Prince Bernard. He used it to go hunting (hence the name “shooting brake “ I guess?). Anyway, this car had some special modifications at the Prince request, including a special compartment to stow his shot guns and ammunition.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240087.jpg

Another Mercedes Benz SL300. These are gorgeous cars. Personally I do prefer the Pagoda, I think it is more elegant, but this makes a very close second. There were some 4-5 of these around the venue on display. These car, well restored make at least Euro 150-250K. I do like this light blue colour paint. Really suits the car. It is a bit unusual, most of these come in black, red/orange. Love this one!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240089.jpg

i was never that impressed by the DMC DeLorean. It started as a great idea, but from idea to actual car it lost so much of what would have made it special. ( see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMC_DeLorean ) It is essentially an aluminium body powered by a Renault engine. Oh, and it has of course Gull Wing Doors. Looks cool, but very impractical. The aluminium body is very impractical too. You touch it, your finger prints will be visible for eternity!

The car was made immortal in the “Back to the Future” movies. And of course, Delorean himself got busted by the FBI for a massive drug deal to fund this very car.

I have seen lots of these DMC Deloreans modified to look like the movie prop. At least this owner had kept it all original! Good for him/her.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240092.jpg

Now, I like my Alfa Romeo Spider. Spider is Italian for open top sports car, so these must be Alfa Spiders too, right?

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240094.jpg

Next to it, a very different Alfa Romeo. This is a 1932, Berlinetta Aerodynamic MM.

re: 2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands

On with the show. As mentioned, Louwman had a big presence. They are mostly known for the Louwman classic car museum in the Hague, the Netherlands. But no mistake, this is a family of hard core petrol heads. Apart from their hobby interest in all classic cars, the Louwman empire also includes many dealerships, including Mazda.

Now, I do not know about you. but if I ever had to own a Mazda I would not mind if it was this one. Look at it, it is gorgeous!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240107.jpg

Unfortunately, Mazda quickly lost the plot. Instead of making truly outstanding and innovative cars (e.g, pushing the enveloppe on rotor engines) they decided to go main stream. Which meant a long stream of utterly reliable, but catastrophically boring cars.

That is, till some Mazda head decided lets copy paste the best of Italian and British rag top sports car. Enter the MX-5

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240108.jpg

The MX-5, in all its variants, is the simply the best in modern rag top sports car experience. It combines all attractiveness of your Healey, MGB and Alfa Spider into one. And makes it utterly reliable. This is not about power and speed. This is about rag top style and rear wheel drive touring. You won’t be going fast, but it sure as hell, will feel so!

Enter the latest MX-5 incarnation. Absolutely lovely, I desperately need one.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240244.jpg

That is, until I saw this on the rear. Sorry, no excuse, who thinks up this stuff? What was Mazda thinking. The coolest modern rag top sports car with the nerdiest logo!?

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240245.jpg

Did I mention this is also a Life style event? No idea what that really means. But it was mentioned on the posters and the various adds across the internet and Facebook. So let’s have a look . It means that next to looking at gorgeous cars, you can also look at mattresses! I kid you not. Swedish mattresses at that and they were sharing a booth with Volvo. Sorry, no offence, but I did not take any images of any Volvo. Fine, safe, reliable and comfortable, but Volvo is just not my thing. The Swedish mattresses are very comfortable too. Also, all credit to this lot, they brought a classic van to the venue!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240110.jpg

I did mention market stalls and diversity earlier on, so let us zoom in a bit. Various little market stalls offering endless auto related books. Lots of model cars for sale

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240126.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250071.jpg

As I mentioned before, this event attracts a far more broader type of audience than many typical classic car shows audiences ( “male-dirt-under-finger-nails” ). . If you look at the attire of the various attendees across the various images, you will notice the Dutch take clothing any which way it comes. Some will show up dressed to the nines, others came in period dress, others just casual, jeans, shorts. Shorts and a smart jacket. Anything goes. By the way a Mercedes Gullwing in Concour state could cost you around a million Euro’s!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240154.jpg

When it come to this lot, Meguairs, I am an absolute sucker. I will just walk up to their stall and tell them, what’s new, take my money, please!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240122.jpg

Of course, there are some hugely interesting market stalls. Many parties that will offer to do a full ground up restoration. But what do the really do? These guys showed you, with real evidence and hundred of photographs. Exquisitely beginning of a Jaguar XK 150 restoration!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240125.jpg

When you drive a classic car, you need to dress the part. Obviously, there are parties that cater to your every classic whim, clothes wise!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240157.jpg

Lots of classic car merchandise on sale, like oil. At the rear, some of the food trucks. Obviously classic food trucks, no less!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240137.jpg

I did mention concept cars, did I not. I am not sure how concept cars made it to classic car event, but they did. Trust me. The latest in Citroen forward looking automative design. I stick to me classics!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240112.jpg

Let us not forget, even though this event caters for all sorts of taste, it is foremost about classic cars. So here is one of my favourites, an Alfa Romeo Spider 2600. Really nice, quite rare and getting to be quite expensive the last few years, think 100K Euro’s and more!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240124.jpg

And another, quite rare and unusual proper classic car:

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240128.jpg

Just another shot showing diversity in both cars and attendees

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240133.jpg

And of course, kids everywhere

re: 2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands

More (classic) cars, more lifestyle!

Let’s continue with some more lifestyle stuff. If you think you can simply drive your classic car with some loafers or slipper you are, obviously, sadly mistaken. You will need some of these. Never mind, a pair of these, will set you back at least Euro 250 - 450! It seems silly money to me. But then I am known to spend similar amounts on stuff that others do not appreciate or understand. Down to personal preference and budget, I dare say.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240159.jpg

Same for coats. do not think you can drive just any old classic and look cool, You have to invest in some proper attire.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240160.jpg

Here is a very different kind of Life style, classic car, type of experience. This young lady will do you a painting of your classic car. I had a very long chat with her. Very interesting on how she goes about it. Combination of lots to technical research and just good old fashioned paint brush competence. These painting sure look the part. My photographs do not do them justice. They were magnificent. Prices from euro 5.000 to 15.000. That sounds like a lot and it is. I never paid anywhere that amount for any my classic cars! But then again, she had never painted a Mercedes W123!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240162.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250059.jpg

Some more imagery on the classic cars. Renault was out in force, when it came to the Alpine. They had a very extensive line up of all Alpines, from the very first to the latest. My all time favourite remains the A110, in stunning Blue. Love that car, but at 1.96m I will never be able to drive it. I won’t fit!. I tried several times, one of my old neighbours had one of these original A110. Could not get in the driver seat. So maybe I should start looking at the new A110. Not a bad looking car either. And going by all the reviews, a great car to drive too.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240163.jpg

Just another note on classic car life style; Ladies, you need to wear a hat!

Some of our members will remember this thread:

https://www.google.com/url?client=in...HnsqUWxCspLlMq

I wrote this some years ago. Nowadays, Nico Aaldering, the founder and owner is one of the big names in classic cars. Not just in the Netherlands. He is well known internationally. He and his firm are present at just about any major classic car event in Europe. Not everybody agrees, but he sure sells a lot and promotes himself even more so. He is on Dutch television every day. My Mercedes W123 came through him as well.

I have known Nico for several decades. He used to be one of the sponsors of the Dutch Alfa Romeo Spider Register. At the time, I was a board member and the Chief Financial Officer. Nico never paid his invoices on time, but he did pay always, eventually. Quite the character.

He brought a stunning collection of various classic car to this event. Just these few cars he brought are worth millions and millions of Euro’s.

Not difficult to identify these cars. The DB5 was very nice. I like most Astons, but the DB5 must be one of the prettiest. Apparently, they do not handle that well at all.

Next to the very exclusive and the very rare, there was also those who promoted the not so rare, in fact the not loved classics. A special club catering for all those cars and brands that, for whatever reason, time forgot!

re: 2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands

Several concept cars on this show too. Both Peugeot and Citroen showed of their latest and greatest. Here is Peugeot thoughts on what their future cars might look like

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240193.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240194.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240195.jpg

And Citroen has their own thought on what cars will look like

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240237.jpg

Me, I still prefer looking at classic cars! Like for instance this handsome Fiat Dino

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240221.jpg

There is this term Supercar. The original Topgear boys used to bang on about it. What makes a car a Supercar. There are some definitions and criteria, but it is also in the eye of the beholder. Still, few would dispute the fact that Lamborghini used to make a lot of super cars. Unique, whacky styling and totally impractical. We like that in Super cars!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240223.jpg

Look at the size of that rear tyre!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240224.jpg

This is such a nice event. So much to see and do. There were several of these little bands, roaming the grounds, playing old 1920-30s songs. Very enjoyable.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240232.jpg

Or how about a proper fashion show? Not often you find a cat walk amongst classic cars!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240184.jpg

Still, the main attraction for most, undoubtedly, the various classic cars.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240203.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240207.jpg

Gorgeous sight towards the end of the afternoon!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240200.jpg

People were taking a rest, seeking shade. What better than to sit on the Royal stairs. You had a commanding view of all the cars in the front garden of the Palace

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8240212.jpg

By now it was getting close to the end of the first day. The show closes at 1800. I still had to made my way back to my hotel. It was difficult finding a hotel in the first place. Lots of hotels were booked due to the Concour. I was lucky to find one.

You were not allowed to take your car with you. All cars had to stay on the venue overnight. Which meant I had to walk to my hotel. I had planned a nice little walk through the woods. But due to the Concours some of the woodland paths had been closed of. Instead of having a nice little stroll through the shady woods, I ended up walking 6 km in the blazing sun. Carrying all my photography gear.

Luckily, the hotel was great. Really nice, friendly and helpful staff. Small, but very comfortable room. Had a very nice dinner and went to bed early. The next day at breakfast I started looking for fellow guest who, just like me, were wearing Concours wrist tags. Quickly spotted an elderly looking gentleman. Asked him for a ride back to the palace. He was very happy to help out. We waited for his grandson to join us. Whilst waiting we were talking about, what else, classic cars. He had brought one of the Bentley Blowers. And his grandson had been driving it. Only 17 years he is, which means he has no driving license. But you can drive cars on private roads without a license. So this lad, drives his Grandfathers Bentley Blower!

When the grandson arrived we walked out to parking lot. His daily ride was a Bentley too. A modern Bentley Continental Convertible. So we rocked up to the palace in style!

re: 2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands

Whereas on Saturday the National Concours took place, the Sunday was the real McCoy, The official Concours d’Elegance. So everybody was busy getting the last little details sorted on their classic cars. Getting rid of that last speck of dust.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250002.jpg

Looking good, or needing a bit more wax?

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250005.jpg

Everybody walking around with polishing clothes, wax, chrome polish etc.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250008.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250013.jpg

And these car do look the part!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250015.jpg

During the morning some 20-25 official judges were doing the rounds. Inspecting each car, talking to the owner. One rule is, that the engine needs to be started! So, everywhere glorious classic engine sounds!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250019.jpg

Here you see the owner of this gorgeous Jenssen talking to the judges. He had little examples of how they had made certain parts, endless photographs. He was, as you notice, also in period dress. It all worked out well for him, as he was one of the prize winners.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250084.jpg

The judging took some 3-4 hours. After that the judges went into the palace. They were given the use of Prince Bernard’s old office to have their final deliberations. I have been a concours judge myself. Nothing like this, but some of the discussion are always the same. For instance, how do you rate an original car, still original paint and parts, showing wear and tear. How do you rate a completely restored car, how original do you call that. Which one is better.

Most Concours solve this debate by having many, many classes and categories! That will facilitate, to some extend a more apple to apple comparison.

And still more non-classic car stuff to be seen. Few motor cycles, but Triumph was present with a line up of all their models

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250025.jpg

Some very modern, super cars! Can you identify?

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250026.jpg

This is a detail on quite a special car. It was known as the periscope. Although, it was actually for catching air.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250069.jpg

The owner of the amphibious car, took it round the Royal pond, several times during the day1

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250039.jpg

And of course, more music. This is a little jazz band, all amateurs, but very enjoyable to listen to. I sat next to them on the grass, whilst having a coffee. Looking at the cars on the palace grounds, the car floating around the pond and watching everybody enjoying themselves.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250052.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250056.jpg

Of course, I got my coffee from a classic food truck, or rather a classic coffee VW Beetle

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250030.jpg

I mentioned the classic car park earlier and showed a little video. So, again, the classic car park is for folks who are coming to this event in their classic car. Classic Car parking is free of charge. But the classic car park is part of the total show. So without an entry tickets you do not get in. Inviting your audience to bring their own classic is well proven formulae classic car events the world over. We will be going to the Goodwood Revival in September. More classic cars will be in the parking lot than on the Goodwood grounds.

I anything these classic car parking lots provide a very good overview of all kinds of classic cars. So a few more images are in order!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250040.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250043.jpg

I really like the overall concept of this show, bringing together so many different aspects of (classic) car ownership. Classic cars, contemporary or concept cars, they all have their own appeal. Have a look at some modern and classic design!

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250060.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250064.jpg

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250066.jpg

Througout both days, they were also driving some of these cars. At the previous location, they had proper sprint competitions. But the owner of the Palace Soestdijk was a bit apprehensive about that. So they tuned it down to a simple obstacle course, accelerate, turn one corner, brake to full stop and across a see-saw, turn and head back. Still spectacular enough!

I end this overview, on the Royal Palace stairs, looking once more at the ex-Royal Rolls Royce.

2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands-p8250081.jpg

I really enjoyed myself immensely. I always enjoy visiting car shows. Being here for two days, and as a participant with a car on show, made it even more appealing. I will most likely go again next year. It really is a fantastic event with a superb organisation. They managed to bring together some really interesting and exotic cars. But when all is said and done, I must admit I do have a slight preference for a more down to earth approach to classic car owner ship.

Octane made a good attempt in bringing more main stream and affordable cars to the show. But truth be told, 95% of the cars on display would have been way out of reach for 95% of the audience.

I might be going to this event next year, but I will definitely going to the Practical Classic and Car show in the UK. Because that is truly about affordable cars and everybody is enjoying getting dirty mucking with old cars. Different audience, different atmosphere. Still, I am lucky to live in a part of the world where there is such an abundance in classic car shows.

re: 2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands

I just noticed a couple of nice video’s on Youtube

Great impressions and with all the names, brands and models spelled out!

Octane magazine put a few film on Youtube as well. This was all filmed on the Sunday.

Gives a great overview of the whole event, including classic car owners arriving for the classic car park lot I mentioned earlier. See if you can spot me and or my car!

Re: 2019 Concours d'Elégance Paleis Soestdijk, The Netherlands

Thanks for the extensive coverage of the event. I attended the Concours event in Hampton Court, London in 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed my day with all the cars around. Compared to that event, the event you attended had a lot more stands displaying modern cars and concepts.

Quote:
One of the magazines I often buy is Octane. An interesting magazine, filled with lots of classic cars stuff, but also touches upon some modern car development. As long is it special, unique and to do with cars, old or new, it is likely to end up in this magazine.
I had the opportunity to intern with Octane UK for a few days two years back. Got some small pieces published on the news page of one edition (Ferrari Anniversary edition in 2017).

Quote:
Notice that none of these cars have barriers or ropes around them? Everybody can just roam around all these cars. There were the odd “please do not touch” sign, but by and large all cars just stood there and anybody, young and old could just get not just within inches, but within millimetres if they wanted to. I really like this, no barriers, just people, not being stupid, not touching, just looking at gorgeous cars!
Something I really liked about the Concours event in London. Unfortunately, this will not work in India as people just jump on the cars.

Thanks for putting this thread up Jeroen!

I set apart a nice Friday afternoon with a cup of coffee to go through it. Loved every bit.

Amazing experience getting close to these wonderful classic cars that most of us only see on the internet, TV or printed media!

I have seen lots of these DMC Deloreans modified to look like the movie prop. At least this owner had kept it all original! Good for him/her.
I loved the SL300 Gullwing coupe when I first saw an article about it many years ago & thought I would buy one but the price had already soared by then.

Also, the Pagodas have climbed up in value as well!

I know that the Delorean brand was purchased by someone else & they have a "factory" of sorts somewhere in Texas where they supply parts to keep the sold cars on the road. I think they've also been planning to introduce a car of their own.

I have been to many UK classic car shows over the years. The British always put up a fabulous show and event. From the very small and local to the very large, international ones. I have only been to one London show; I wrote about it on the forum too:

Yes, many classic cars have gone up considerable in value over the last twenty years. I remember some 25 years ago, I was at an Italian Classic Car event. They had a beautiful Ferrari Dino on display and it was for sale. The year before I had bought my Alfa Spider and the price for the Dino was only just double what I had paid for my Alfa Spider. Whilst my Alfa Spider has gone up a bit in value, maybe 30-40% in the 25 years I have owned it, the Dino has gone up with 2000-3000%. Yes, 20-30 times as much! 25 years ago, owning a Dino was, if I stretched myself and my wife would agree, very much possible. These days it is neither financially feasible or even worth bringing up with the wife!

Thanks I did not know that. I quickly checked Wikipedia and they do mention something along these lines.

But it does not appear very recently updated though.

Interesting!

At first I thought it might be a Gumpert Apollo, but then I realised the style of the inlet was a little too oldschool...

Thank you for the pics and write up about the show. What a lovely location - a palace with a fabulous history. I understand it was going to be converted into a hotel and event centre and some houses were also going to be built on the property - has that happened?

Had a doubt - in your first video - at around the 2.08 mark, you mention "Another Jag " but the car appears to be a Triumph TR3 (pic below) - could you please clarify?
