I was finally able to install new 2015.20 maps on Nuvi 55LM after lot of hit and try method and over 4 hours research!!

New devices have different copyright protection and was able to unlock the maps using gimgunlock.0 MapSigPatch.rar from http://gpsunderground.com/forum/garm...a-7-print.html

Then turned the device into MPT mode and swapped the unlocked the img file with unlocked map file in .System hidden folder. No need to rename the file or copying needed on SD card.

I'll soon be updating to the most recent version of maps (and f/w if its older) on my 2565LM. I guess, I'm running one of those 2014 versions or 2015.10. I was always using MMI on my garmin device for last 3 years but since this last update, it seems Garmin has improved their maps and coverage really well and I see most what is covered by MMI also covered by Garmin, I'm yet to make a long trip with Garmin on it and see the way it does routing, takes you to the bypass wherever needed etc.. Has anyone got any inputs on comparison between the latest MMI and Garmin maps? Its good to see the junction view on Garmin maps which I cant get on MMI. Also, what about these latest on zomato dining information and travel book download? has anyone used it!!

Versions 2015.10 and 2015.20 are the same. So if you are on 2015.10 then 2015.20 will not load.

Hi ppl,

Ordered Garmin Nuvi 42LM from Snapdeal last Monday and got it delivered yesterday evening.

Does the USB cable provided is a mini USB type or micro USB type. Also by any chance is it possible to power this device by a USB port of say the car audio USB port ?

Thanks.

The cable is mini USB type on device side.
It should work with any USB interface .. I would expect.

On my 2465LM which has a mini-USB on the power connector while a u-USB can be used directly into the unit I use a mobile charger into the u-USB with no sweat. It wakes up and just select Garmin mode.

I am looking to buy GPS device for few days now. Still confused if I buy a dedicated GPS device or a Low end smartphone (within 5-6K with decent battery life) with paid navigation applications so that it will no more data access.
Today found Garmin Nuvi 42LM on internet which is 5.5K only. Is it have too small screen? Does it require additional micro USB to upgrade the maps in future?
Can any one advice me that what should I choose? I read the some difficult map procedure in the Garmin 42LM device.

Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks

Suvo .. I had gotten a Nuvi 42LM unit a few months back - refer to the post bookmarked above.
If its still available around 5.5K then the deal is pretty good.

Some of my inputs after using in the meantime:
- the screen size is just fine for its purpose,
- it comes with mini-USB to connect to your laptop through which you could do s/w & map upgrade,
- upgrade procedure is not difficult and s/w upgraded just fine; but the map upgrade had issues (not the procedure, but version doesn't change).
- iTNerd suggested a bypass for that, I haven't tried it yet.
The pre-loaded OEM map is not very old, so didn't go for the hack.

Thanks for your input Deep.
Do you suggest me to go ahead for Nuvi 42Lm or to go for smart phone for similar price with paid navigation application? Got an information that Microsoft phones (Lumia ones) have better GPS hardware and free full version of HERE maps.

You could use any android phone as well for this purpose, and HERE maps/app are freely installable on all platforms. So that's an option to consider.
I had in fact tried this out on my Moto G and found that phone tends to get heated while plugged-in for charging continuously.
So if you find a decent phone with higher battery power, that can be considered.
In the end as I pointed out, at 5.5K 42LM just looked a steal.

Thanks.

Finally got delivery of my Garmin Nuvi 42 LM. Thanks to Deepv for his post on Snap Deal i got it for 5.7k. Snap deal courier Go javas took their own time to deliver the product and it was lying at their warehouse for over a week till the delivery date got overdue.

To answer my own question, yes i can power it via the Car audio USB output. It asks whether it wants to run in Garmin Mode or USB storage mode when connected to the audio USB. All we have to do is select Garmin Mode and it keeps charging via the USB. I haven't had a live experience with the product as i got it late at 7 PM last evening courtesy the courier company.

When i switched on the product i was able to receive satellite inside my home close to the windows for some time. But i managed to figure out the workings. At first i was frustrated because i was using the address feature to search for my office location as a test and it was giving no matches found message. Then i noticed the search function at the bottom of the screen where i was thankfully able to locate my office area. Imagine not able to find a place 30kms from your home and i am suppose to use this for navigation for farther off distances.

The interface is best described as unfriendly and needs some getting use to. The touch screen is from the dinosaur age and one has to wait patiently for the input to be processed by the unit which can take upto a second to respond. Overall quality is good and i don't expect the unit to give me extremely precise location of a place as i find that the maps don't have many locations listed but i expect this to atleast point me in the right direction.

Address feature isn't great at least for India maps .. or possibly we need to have how to use it guide.
But you should 'search' a location nearby your destination and then find the specific location you want on the map.

I used to be quite fine with Garmin touchscreen when I used a friend's old unit a couple of years back.
But now a days with all smartphones coming up with such smooth touchscreens, its a bit of task to train your mind back to use this patiently.

Yes, the Garmin touchscreen does require quite a push. more of a shove! Often you get a feeling it is not working. But remember on the move on a bumpy track that may not be such a bad idea. Yes, @deepv; is right touchscreens have spoilt our habits.

Thank you. I have been cursing Garmin for so long because was unable to download genuine maps inspite having genuine LM version of Nuvi 55. Had to struggle a lot before I was able to unlock maps using some unlocker. However, garmin site was always telling me to download plugin.. you resolved this. Much appreciated. Now I have official download with unlock code.

I have Version 2015.10 on my Garmin Nuvi 50 LM. Tried to update it to 2015.20. At first it was asking to download the plug-in, then using the compatibility view method it was able to recognise my device.

But then unfortunately it shows this message "No file update available, reason maybe: The version of map in your Device is up to date.
Illegal Device"

Any ideas on how to proceed? Or is it better to simply stay on 2015.10 till the next update?
