Suggest you try out this

https://my.garmin.com.tw/mapUpgrade/?locale=in

Download garmin communicator plugin and this will install into your web browser.
Connect your device after this and browser should detect your device.
Follow on screen instructions and sign in into garmin.
I dont remember exactly what happens next but its just a matter of following the steps.

(Note: I think you have to select your device into USB Storage mode)

Hi

I have all the things as suggested above. the garmin software confirms the presence of india maps against the device number. But when i go into the device and select maps/info only the selection for malaysia pops up. Also i downloaded the india maps but when i tried to upload the same into the device i got an error message saying not enough space.

Hello All,
Admittedly a noob when it comes to GPS systems, can any present users of the Garmin Nuvi 40 or 50LM shed some light on the following:
1. I understand that the device comes with a whole lot of its own POI’s. However, can one add POI’s of their own? For instance, I am at a particular location between Mumbai and Nashik (say Ghoti Toll naka), can I mark that location on the device as a POI? If yes, how many such POI’s (approx.) can I mark out?
2. I realize that the device does not come with its own wall charger; only a car charger. However, can it be charged via a USB connection to a computer/laptop?

Looking to get a 50LM soon.

1) You can save any location (touch the car image wherever you are and click 'save location' -- it will be saved in the 'favourites' folder). You can save many such 'favourite' locations but I'm not sure about the upper limit.

2) The device can be easily charged through a USB port.

From first impressions, the Garmin 50LM appears to be quite a useful device overall for navigating our Indian roads. Yet to put it to a road test though.

It charges well with a laptop via a USB to micro-USB cable, it does not turn on while so connected. To turn on the device and use it I first need to (safely) remove the device from the PC. This is not the case when it’s being charged by an external charger – car charger or wall charger.
On another note, it also charges quite well via a portable solar charged battery!

As debuda mentioned, it does allow you to save your very own locations as favorites. The upper limit for this, as specified by the person giving the demo, is 1000.

Take a look at http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/gadget...s-etc-190.html. Many of the issues about the upgrade have been discussed. You may find it of help.

In the 50LM, you do not have an option to save the routes that you have done. I would like to know if that is a software related feature, or does the hardware not support it? The 50LM seems to be a great device but for this feature, and wanted to know if this feature can/may be added in the future software updates?

On a couple of occasions, it goofed up a bit on the highway and advised me to take some state highways (SH) instead of continuing straight on NH2 (GT Road / Golden Quadrilateral). I have set the route mode to 'faster time' and not 'shortest distance'.

Inside Jamshedpur and Kanpur, the maps are reasonably detailed but I guess more detailed mapping work needs to be done in the smaller towns / cities of India. I'm waiting to reach Delhi where the GPS will be subjected to its acid test, with numerous roundabouts, clover leafs, flyovers and one-way streets. Will continue to report my experience.

Hope you get your GPS navigator soon. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I had a chance to use the MMI device of my friend during my trip to a remote corner of Tamilnadu. While driving I would notice that every single lane on either side was coming up on the device. I mean EVERY single, small, insignificant lane in the remotest parts. Is that level of detailed map available in Garmin maps?

Couple of other questions:
1. Can I add a "section" of the road as something to avoid, say, when I know a particular stretch is bad or closed?
2. Does it show one-way/roads closed etc?

Thanks!

MMI maps are still the best for India, however Navteq is now very close, and as far as I am concerned good enough for even tier 3 cities. With LM maps are free, and nobody doubts that the build quality of Garmin is the best in business.

Took the plunge and ordered the Garmin nuvi 50LM from Snapdeal yesterday. Snapdeal was running their 3rd birthday celebration and offered a meager 3% off on the listed price of 8990/-

Will be dumping my 3 year old chinese device + Satguide maps. I used to think quite high of the Satguide maps until it dumped me on my maiden goa road trip earlier this year.

The device got shipped out yesterday by Bluedart and is expected to reach me by today/tomorrow. Lets see what Garmin has to offer once I take on the roads and put it to test.

It seems to me that the ONLY thing that is good about Garmin is its build quality and fast satellite lock. I'm highly disappointed by its maps and felt like throwing it out of my car window and driving my XUV over it on a number of occasions!

I have driven 9500 KM with my 50LM over the last 3 months to different parts of India and the Garmin maps were consistently unsatisfactory almost everywhere I went. Recently, I drove to Vizag from Jamshedpur. While the main highways between Jamshedpur and Vizag were mapped more or less correctly, I found the map details unsatisfactory inside Vizag (Visakhapatnam). Many important places in Vizag are not mapped. When I drove to Araku Valley from Vizag, I found that the entire highway between Vizag and Araku was missing from Garmin maps!

Garmin need to upgrade their India maps pretty soon if they are serious about capturing market share in India.

Coming back to the so-called 'good hardware' reputation -- a certain section of my touchscreen often acts up while inputting alpha-numerics. So one can't even take for granted that Garmin would be rock solid as far as hardware is concerned. And remember, there is NOT A SINGLE service facility for Garmin in entire India.

I copied Map my india version 7 maps into a micro SD card and put it inside my garmin. I have the option of choosing between navteq or MMI maps in my Garmin. MMI Maps are supposed to be better than the navteq ones. However, a lot of people say that the navteq maps are at par with MMI.

I was using Satguide(since 2009) before my garmin came in and I also used MMI sygic application in my mobile (which I feel is very extensive in terms of coverage). I will post my findings here once I take my car out for a spin. Try popping a MMI map into your garmin and drive around for a while and then do report back.

Some questions :
  1. What is the size (in MB) of the MMI Version 7.0 maps?
  2. Does MMI sell the maps separately (even if you don't buy the GPS device from them) and how much does it cost?
  3. What kind of configuration would be required in the 50LM before and after inserting the Micro SD card? How does one toggle between the two maps?

1. The size is around 400MB.

2. Yes. The MMI maps can be bought separately from them even if you have not purchased the unit from them. (http://www.mapmyindia.com/store/maps...buy-and-review). These cost around 4500/- as against 7000 sometime back. GARMIN's entry into India has triggered this price drop.

3. No Configuration changes required. After you have inserted the micro SD with Maps, you should browse down to Settings --> Map --> Info and there you get the list of maps in the system which can be selected by checking the check boxes.

I guess the strength of Garmin is the Achilles heel for MMI. I own a VX140S and of late it simply refuses to get a lock or stay locked. Time and again it just sits dumb on the dashboard. I initially thought that perhaps it was the placement which might be obstructing the view but even changing the mount position did not help. The map quality is perhaps better as it is able to identify some lesser known routes in lesser known places apart from listing a large variety of points of interest. However there are times when it is simply dumb. During my Vizag trip it was identifying a "konda" with some private houses as Bhavikonda and insisted I must drive through some houses to get there. Google maps however was spot on in identifying the correct position of Bhavikonda. Of late I have found that the reliability of Google maps have improved a lot. I do however rely on mostly local information when I have even an iota of doubt.
