Apple's CarPlay iOS Info System

Apple Rolls Out CarPlay Giving Drivers a Smarter, Safer & More Fun Way to Use iPhone in the Car

Quote:
Apple today announced that leading auto manufacturers are rolling out CarPlay, the smarter, safer and more fun way to use iPhone in the car. CarPlay gives iPhone users an incredibly intuitive way to make calls, use Maps, listen to music and access messages with just a word or a touch. Users can easily control CarPlay from the car’s native interface or just push-and-hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri without distraction. Vehicles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will premiere CarPlay to their drivers this week, while additional auto manufacturers bringing CarPlay to their drivers down the road include BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.

Apple's CarPlay iOS Info System

Dear All, Apple introduced 'CarPlay' with leading manufacturers on the very first day of 84th Geneva Motor Show; leaving Google and Microsoft, its biggest competitors behind. Expect the interface of the infotainment system to be similar to that of iOS 7. What it does is, it connects your iPhone (prerequisite to have lightning enabled iPhones, namely, iphone 5s; 5c and 5) with the car infotainment system providing an effortless experience.

re: Apple's CarPlay iOS Info System

This is definitely Apple testing the waters, their first step toward the in-car-entertainment market. I expect a full range of Apple head-units to follow.

Apple's next growth opportunity is staring itself in the face. After smartphones & tablets, what's the next big thing? Certainly not an iWatch or iGlasses. Everyone has a car and the masses have unbelievable love for Apple. I wouldn't be surprised to see 5-lakh rupee hatchback owners splurging 25 - 30k on an Apple head-unit.

Apple unveils CarPlay at the Geneva Auto Show 2014

Continuing the screengrabs from Apple US's website:

Glad to see Hyundai and Honda among the big shots!

Only iPhones with the proprietary Lightning connector supports CarPlay which means only 3 models right now:

I wonder if it would pair with iPads with the Lightning connector?

The list of countries to receive this feature on their cars:

Since the Show opened, in fact, Apple and Ferrari technical staff have been inundated by requests from journalists and have been demonstrating CarPlay and its functionalities as well as explaining how it integrates with the car’s native system.

Now that's a bit confusing. Ferrari claims the FF is the first to bring out the CarPlay and so does Mercedes!

Full range? Meaning CarPlay & CarPlay S ?

Wearables have a ton of potential, but i just don't think anyone has got it right as yet. Apple might if they try.

Another possible 'next' big thing is TVs. Will be interesting to see if that is pursued.

This is where i think things will be different. I highly doubt apple will be selling their head-units off the shelf.

Knowing apple, it will only be via OEM tie-ups.

Rehaan, I dont really think TV's have potential. As the wireless connectivity and speeds improve, TVs would only be relegated to background and Tablets/Phones would take over TVs functionality. This would also allow people to carry the channels along with them on the go rather than limited to home

I would anticipate the same. Apple's strengths are in no-hassle portable devices (incl. software) - they will stick to their core strength.

"the first car in the world to be offered with CarPlay. "
"Mercedes-Benz will be the first German premium automotive manufacturer to bring Apple's “CarPlay”"

Both are right, no? They are not claiming the same thing, from what you have quoted.

Re: Apple unveils CarPlay at the Geneva Auto Show 2014

From what I understand, Apple is not going to manufacture and retail the HUs. Instead, they will lend their support to the HU OEMs and car manufacturers for the CarPlay integration.

Voice-based turn-by-turn navigation and interaction (Siri) is going to be fun.

Re: Apple's CarPlay iOS Info System

The good news is that Mercedes-Benz have already announced that they will make CarPlay retro-fit kits available for older models too - not immediately, but in due course.

Re: Apple's CarPlay iOS Info System

Slightly off topic but still related to Apple and iOS hence posting here -

Apple has gotten new twist to the tale - In flight iOS.

It looks like, they are focusing more on the iOS for enabling the integration with external displays and controls alike. This is where it gets interesting as the current ongoing smartphone revolutions would shift to the machine to machine communication and related use cases. We have witnessed mobile penetrating deep into our lives and this may take it deeper or may push the axis towards other connected devices.

I do not think Apple is on to this. Car play means free advertising for iOS devices and will help in increasing sales of its iOS devices even further. The OEM's benefit by getting the iOS's excellent user interface free of cost and saves their own development costs. Beyond this, I think wearables are the next big thing and expect Apple to get it right if and when the get into it.
