How is your n7 powered? Are you using an invertor or the 12 v socket? Which brand?

Re: DIY: Tablet as an In-Car-Entertainment Console

One the of best, complex, interesting and unusual DIYs that I have read in a long time and I am impressed with your ideas, patience and perseverance in achieving the same. Rated the thread 5 Stars for all the efforts you have put.

Fixing the Tab, interfacing the same with various USB units for streaming and Media, the DAC module with the Microphone 'et al take this DIY to the next level .

I am sure you will have a tough time when some curious co-passengers sees and experiences your set-up and asks you How did you do it?

Apologies for the silence. My 10-month old niece on vacation, deadlines at work, some travel and another small DIY project have been and will be keeping me busy for the next couple of weeks. Promise to get back with responses for each one of your queries and some demo pics / video post that. Thanks for all the appreciation meanwhile.

Fantastic job! To add , are you converting 12 V to AC, and then using the stock SMPS adapter for the N7?

Re: DIY: Tablet as an In-Car-Entertainment Console

This is the post that is shown to a lot of my tech friends (read IITs) who talk of ideas inside their cars- and believe you me, its quite a humbling experience for them.
Am very impressed with your whole ownership and detailing of it.
Kudos

Excellent thread and amazing detailed write up. Have had a nexus 7 2012 lying around the house and have been wanting to do something like this. You have just inspired me to take the plunge.

Any thoughts on attaching a keyboard to the setup for easier access? I'm assuming that the setup also does not let you receive / make calls as nexus 7 is without a sim.

Re: DIY: Tablet as an In-Car-Entertainment Console

Hi
Any battery drainage issue? Or does the dc-dc PCB handle that? Or did you splice the factory stereo cable only ( that actuates on ignition only) to the power input for the board?

Have been planning to do something like this for a while, so glad to find this torch.

Not really an electrical guy, hence the ques.

Re: DIY: Tablet as an In-Car-Entertainment Console

Tried it after lurking at many apple carplay/android auto headunits. Results are very impressive in terms of functionality, android auto and apple car play works with charm. Few details and pictures attached below.

Car : HONDA CIVIC FK8 LX
Tab : Lenovo M8 HD
Dongle : CARLINK KIT A1
Accessories: OTG cable, tablet holder
Total cost : 6000rs, thanks to amazon deals.

Dongle works with android phone or tablet ( android 8.0+) as receiver for your carplay and android auto connectivity.

Re: DIY: Tablet as an In-Car-Entertainment Console

Tab : Lenovo M8 HD
Dongle : CARLINK KIT A1

The Carlink kit is really not needed for the setup,I'm using Lenovo Tab M10 an ICE on my Tata zest with an app called "Headunit Reloaded" It's a paid app however there's a trial version available on the Play Store and Android auto works flawlessly just like it works on any dongle/car ICE and it's not clunky and looks neat moreover it frees up the port which I use with a dongle called "EasyCap" that converts AV signals from the reverse cam to usb which can be directly plugged into the tab via otg and you get a bigger screen which really helps while reversing.

Thanks for the app, was searching for these ones was fiddling with zlink app. I was using the dongle to connect my phone and iphone to the tab, this app helps only in self projection right ?

I was even ok with tab alone setup and google maps, with headunit app and android auto screen its even more nicer now. Tried the tab setup on multiple cars, its very much practical and useful.

Now looking into rear cam setup for my brother's car, hopes EASYCAP helps or will look in for wireless options.

Re: DIY: Tablet as an In-Car-Entertainment Console

Theoretically speaking, is it possible to have a 360-degree camera setup where the display will be an android tab (independent of the car HU)?

Re: DIY: Tablet as an In-Car-Entertainment Console

Made an update to the setup replacing the suction type tablet holder with strong magnets. Looks good and user friendly.
