Be advised of the 500GB limitation as well, as /u/sunnyboy has mentioned.

Before you order, lets prepare a checklist first, go through them, tick them off.
the 500GB limitation is why I ordered the 500GB SSD.

This is my wife's car's HU

I have an OEM from Toyota. I run that though an Audison Bit One and then into amplifiers and speakers.

Yes most HUs can now read FLAC. Kenwood/JVC (they are sister brands), Pioneer, Sony and Alpine all have several models that can read FLAC.

Couple of pointers :

If you're using windows, the default partitioning tool will not allow you to make FAT32 partitions > 120GB. You have to use a third party software such as EaseUS Partition Manager to do the same. I use EaseUS as well since windows wont allow me to format my 128GB SD Cards in FAT32.

If your hard disk isn't detected by the head unit, get a Y cable which has a separate USB port for power, plug that into a cigarette socket phone charger

1. Windows for what? I have Windows on my PC but the HU I assume uses some other operating system. I don't know if it is Android or not.

2. Why would the hard disk not be detected? A SSD needs less power than a an iPod Classic. Do I need to put some software on the SSD?

I have the lowest model available with blaupunkt, San Marino 330 and that too reads and plays FLAC with no hitch.

Noob here. Pioneer avhz 5190 and 9190 are the two latest HU. I am planning to buy either one of them based on how much money i have. No rationale. just came across made up my mind. Do they play FLAC from HDD.

If the USB port has enough power to power the HDD yes the HU is capable of playing FLAC. See page 59 of the manual.
