My 2cents when purchasing car speakers.

There are a lot of 'made in china' Fakes of JBL and Sony Xplod.

The chances of buying a fake Blaupunkt is much lesser in comparison.

So make sure you select a reputed dealer. Since you are in bangalore its best not to pickup speakers from stores in JC Road although they will give you the best prices.

While in principle you are correct about buying from a reputed dealer- That is a pretty inaccurate 2 cents

There are no fakes of either Sony Xplod or JBL. There are however some speakers that look similar to Sony Xplod, but they are not branded SOny, or Xplod.
There are no fake JBL speakers in the market.

Interestingly all 3 brands, Sony, Blaupunkt and JBL have factories in China and thats where the "original" speakers are made. NO matter where in the world you buy them from. Just like Apple's computers and iPods.
Blaupunkt also has a large facility in Malaysia and many of their products are manufactured there.

Your chances of getting a duplicate speaker of these brands is remote.

They are made in china because the production is large and costs cheaper to the manufacturer.

Checkout the experience of fellow Team BHP'ians regarding fake speakers on JC Rd.

Here's how you come across the fakes, Walk into couple of small shops on JC Road. Ask for car speakers just specifying the brand say 'Sony' and ask him what is the best price? Haggle a bit on the price and he will soon bring out his fakes at attractive prices.

Sony Xplod and Pioneer I know 100% for sure there are fakes on sale. JBL maybe not as many fakes around in comparison.

Also agree that Original speakers are manufactured in China don't dispute this. What I meant was you also get duplicates from the same land.

cheers:

I think they are mistaking grey market products and rates for fakes.

Er... Samji.. Can you please elaborate?
I'll send you a pic of my JBL CS2104s Grill, had PMed about this to Navinji earlier when you were on Vacation. Also, I started to give my CS 60.4 a long look doubting whether it's a D maal.

What's to elaborate. It's my job to know if there are any JBL fakes in the market.

The company Sam works for represents JBL (along with most Harman Intl. brands) in India. AKG, BSS and DBX might be the only 3 Harman brands they do NOT represent.

Sam, correct me.

Yes there are definitely some Pioneer fake speakers in the market, and they are manufactured in Delhi. In fact, they are manufactured by my friend's uncle. The easiest test is to look at the speaker grill. If it is rusted, it is most definitely a fake. (My friend told me this)

Well, he said some from the point of view that the numbers now are nothing compared to a decade ago and over.

Speaker grills wouldnt usually leave the factory rusted. They would rust if they've been sitting around very long. And its not like there's just one company making duplicate speakers, so there will be different ways to tell one duplicate and another from the original.

Of course thats what I meant! Who would buy speakers with rusted grills?. This is more like a post-purchase determination method.
(I learnt this from my own experience, as my current Pio speaker grills got rusted within 3 years, whereas my previous Pioneer grills were perfect even after 5+ years of usage)

Yes surely there are a bunch of companies out there making fake Pioneers. Another (pre purchase) way I have heard is to fire up the HU volume to the max and if the sound starts to crack up/crumble down, it is most definitely fake. However, I have not tried this method.
