The Denser and heavier the wood you use, the better it is. MDF is easy to work with, well, easier than Plywood anyways. But a good heavy marine ply is a better bet for making a nice box.
However for the parcel tray, honestly MDF is just fine.

Plywood is a mess to work with, and doesn't have half the acoustical advantages of using a fiber-board. 12mm MDF should be good for a parcel tray. Never under 18mm for a subwoofer enclosure.
Go for MDF...don't use plywood. Only plywood I like to use is Birch Plywood to make enclosures...sounds good. But MDF is more rugged and durable.
On that note - Yesterday I had to drive my dad & cousin to the airport, a little extra luggage and carelessness caused the suitcase to hit my rear left speaker.
Now the MDF around the four screws have all chipped out and my speaker is lose, there's no way to screw them in with the company screws. Will need to get longer screws or come up with some other idea (maybe metal paste?)

Ply is usually easier to work with than MDF. Use a power saw on MDF and see the dust fly!
However to use Ply wood for any speaker box it must be VOID FREE. There are some grades of Marine Ply available in India that are VOID FREE. Many are not. If you dont know wood. stick to MDF and use a mask.
The Thnner the wood used the more the bracing required. You can use 6mm wood but brace it evey 4" or so and see how stiff it gets.
Beyond that I have used Hardoods (incl. Rose Wood, Oak, Teak and even Ebony), SoftWoods (Birch, Beech, etc...), Plys and MDF and even aluminum and fiberglass and of these MDF has the smallest learnig curve.
Aluminum is best used in extrusions mated to SS Baffles cut on a water jet machine. I intend to make a HT/AV speaker using this technique sometime.
Fiberglass has great stregth/Stifness to weight ratio but I find that to really make fiberglass stiff as hell on can sandwich 3mm MS between 2 layers of FRP. (FRP is Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic or Reson Bonded Fiberglass). Do this before the resin hardens and you got a 9mm (3-3-3) thick material that is stiff as hell and wont resonate like SS or AL. I intend to may a car sub box (for the Octy) using this technique atleast for the baffle. Sam you'll see! :-)
FRP's great advantage really is it's ability to be moulded into just about any shape.
Beyond that some materials are a No No. Glass is a reall No No. It resonates like hell and no matter how to workit you cant kill those resonances. I tried Lead sheet (1.5mm), Dacron, Rubbers, etc... no avail. I think Plxiglass would be agreat amterial though. Gotta lay my hands on some soon.

I once cut up a whole 8x4 sheet of MDF inside the apartment with a circular saw and the room took about a week to clean.
Is plexiglass cheaper than MDF?
Don't use circular saw...its very messy...use good quality Jigsaw...eg. Bosch with pendulum action.
I need to get one of them jigs. Pretty useful thing. How much do they cost?
No plexiglas is about 5 times the cost of MDF
Sam you are giving me ideas. I think I will kas my wife if she will tolerate plexiglass boxes in her car. I am thinking of maybe reconfugring her woofers.
Plexiglass enclosures are good for showing off...Still personally prefer MDF as it has much better acoustical properties than Plexiglass.

I would rather buy the Alpine 9856 for $229 which is the same identical price on that website as the Pioneer 680. Go for the Alpine IMO
