From the experiences on TBHP, one would think Alpine 9887 would be a better bet than these 2.

The major drawback of Eclipse is lack of installed base of HUs in India, and hence lack of service. Clarion is way ahead on that, but service lacks.

At that price point, Alpine would be far better w.r.t. performance and service, and is available in India with b&w.

Thanks DerAlte. Presently, I have Alpine 9881 in my car and I am bored of it now. I have seen some gurus swearing on eclipse and yet some other swearing on Clarion. So I want to try one of these HUs. I want guidance on which of this HU will have better SQ - DXZ775USB or Eclipse CD7100.

You cant compare a $700 machine with a $300 one. The Eclipse does ome with a huge reputation and excellent controls and my fav D-A converter using the Delta Sigma algorithim. but would I pay more than twice for this I dont know. Would you?

You may also want to compare the Alpine 9887 ($450) + KTX-100EQ IMPRINT Sound Manager ($250) = $700 with the Eclipse ($700) before taking a call on this.

Thanks Navin. I agree that the comparison is not an ideal one. But I thought the eclipse is costlier because of the GPS feature.

How would Clarion DXZ775USB you rate when compared with Alpine 9887. Again only in terms of SQ.:)

What will be the role of the sound manager? Sorry I am dumb:Frustrati

I have this question about FM sensitivity. Some HU have excellent radio reception and some have only average reception. In my understanding FM Sensitivity affects the radio reception (but I may be wrong). The FM Sensitivity for a HU is given in dBf. According to Crutchfield the smaller the value, better the ability to catch the signal. If for a HU the dBf value is relatively high, would it be right to assume that by installing a good power antenna the HU's FM reception will be as good as the FM reception of a HU for which the dBf rating is low.

wanna know a good audio system guy in chennai.. cud ya guys help mme out wid tht... pretty new to dese sope would help if da guy cud gimme options and performance comparisons

Friends, some changes to the plan. I discovered while reading specs that both Alpine and Clarion HU's available in US are not compatible with European Tuning which essentially means that FM will not work if I source them from US. However the Eclipse HU is available with European Tuning. So now I have two options...

Source Alpine 9887 in Bangalore - Around 22K with B&W
Source Eclipse CD7100 from US - Around 25K without B&W

please: please: advice.

I would compare figures only withing the same brand. the method used to measure this vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Ifi youa re big FM fan I would consider HUs that can accomodate multiple antenna so you can avoid picket fencing.

Navin, you are a pro. I am not sure if I understand this. Please let me know if Eclipse HU will have decent FM reception? It has a declared FM Sensitivity of 15dBf.

No. The warranties cover so less and anyways the risk that a good HU will go kaput within 1st yr of it's operation is less and I am okay to take that risk.

I find Pio HUs have the best reception.

You answered your own question. if you dont need the warranty the Eclipse is a HU with a big reputation.

Compare apples with apples :-) Alpine 9887 without B&W (wrt India) in the US trades for $300, which is 12k. JFYI.

Another aspect is how much should you "risk" on a component? If all being equal - which arent in this case, then anyone would prefer the smaller amount, right?

I've bought Illusion EL62 coaxials as front speakers. (Thanks to B&T and moralfibre for their help:) )
I need the gurus to advise me about the rear speakers that'll match the laid back music of the illusions. I want speakers with a good amount of bass and dont like bright shrill sounding speakers.

Here's a few of the options i have

Ground Zero MK 2 ovals
JBL GTO 937
Alpine S-type
Pioneer
Anything else you guys can suggest

TIA
