6.5" Speaker Recommendation

Looking to buy some 6.5" speakers. Here are the requirements, any help is appreciated. Requirements are not flexible beyond what is indicated (read: limited funds).

1) Efficient/Sensitive. The most important attribute, because I need the speakers to get as loud as possible with as little power as possible particularly in the 60-200Hz range. 120db + capability in the specified frequency range (and beyond) is the goal.

2) Clarity - Low THD.

3) Must be 4 speakers. Preferable if the front/rears are the same brand/model.

3) 10k budget, speakers only. 2-3k extension if the result is significantly louder with equal or lower THD compared to the 10k option.

4) Speaker does not need to be naturally flat. In fact it is preferred if it has a natural bump below 200Hz. Rolled off treble (above 8KHz) is a plus too.

5) The current HU is rated for 20W RMS. My current (uneducated) choice for speakers is the JBL GTO 638.

The final goal for the speaker is as loud as possible (with most of the emphasis on 60-200Hz) with as little THD as possible in 10k using 4 6.5" speakers. Dynamic, loud and clear.

Random info that might be useful for making recommendations -

It is for the "new" Honda City (2009).

The speakers are for various types of music, all with plenty of bass/midbass.

There is no space to install ovals without some serious modifications as far as I can tell, if there is please let me know.

Is there going to be an amplifier in the setup?

An amp can be added but then I will be spending a little less on speakers depending upon the amp price. I did think about adding a JBL GTO-504E.

The only high sensitivity (90+ db) 6.5 inch speakers I've come across are 300$+ Focals.

You are not going to get very loud off the HU only. Spend money (the 10k) on a half decent pair of speakers and an amplifier and you'll get better results.

I assume this is for the NHC and not ANHC. Most speakers with high sensitivity ratings (published) will sound bright. Often manufacturers will push the HF levels in their speakers (since it does not stress than suspension of the woofer which is what limits SPLs most) to get higher sensitivity numbers.

My advice to you would be to listen to a few well known brands. Get a feel of what you are getting. Speakers that are loud might not nesscarily fit your tonal requirements.

Navin, I am not sure what you are referring to by NHC and ANHC. I will definitely try to listen to speakers before buying them but is there any specific model that I should be looking at that will give me the necessary sensitivity/efficiency in the 60-200Hz range that I am looking for.

I got a few options from the shops apart from the JBL GTO638. They offered Polk MM651, JBL GT5-S644 (the GTO-504 was not available) and Hertz 165 (I assume Energy series? They quoted about 5k/pair) and a Kicker speaker (forgot to ask model). All coaxials. One of them suggested Rockford Fosgate but before I asked about the specifics he mentioned it was 12k/pair which is beyond the budget.

Would it be a good idea to get door damping done?

Without an amplifier, the frequencies you've asked for that come under sub and mid bass won't be heard. You'll need damping too since these low frequencies cause the metal to ring

I can add a JBL GT5-S644 or something that costs about the same.

The GT5-S644 should cost about 5k.
Consider the JBL power series P660c speaker. This one's loud.

Locally I was quoted 8k. JBL's website lists 9k MRP. Are you sure its supposed to be 5k?

Thanks for the info Navin.

I have the ANHC.

I've got my choices narrowed to the Hertz DCX 165, JBL GTO638 and the Polk MM651, which one would be more appropriate for the mid bass? Will use a JBL GT5-S644 amp with them.
