Re: Indian Railway’s new WDG5 Locomotive, supported by Electro-Motive Diesel

Coming back on topic, where are the WDG5s? With GE making new diesel locos, what will be the fate of WDG5?

As much as I know , the WDG5 was an attempt by DLW to manufacture a dedicated freight loco which was more advanced than the WDG4, with EMD technology.
It bombed and now doesn't make sense with GE coming in, as well as with electrification.

I think apart from the 5 manufactured, 3 are with Gooty and I did visit the shed/station hoping to see one , couple of months ago.
Sadly , I got to see one from far since it was parked at one end of the shed siding with all its engine doors opened, clearly parked.

If you search 'WDG5' in YT, there are some good videos of the same. They are massive loco's compared the ALCo's

Quoting MadiMamma, it will propably be taken off service soon and join IR's list of other failed locomotives like WAP6, WDM7 etc. OR like how old WAP1's are now being converted to WAP4's (BRC, GZB).

These WDG5's may be converted to WDG4's and put on regular freight/official duty. Never know how IR operates.

Btw the first batch of GE Locos that arrived.

As per the News article

The first 40 locomotives are being built at GE’s plant in Erie, Pennsylvania, while the remaining 960 units will be assembled at a new joint venture production facility at Marhoura in Bihar.

But what exactly was the problem with these WDG5 locos?

I think it was just one that reached port. Rest will follow.

Surprisingly this a 4 stroke engine compared to the 2 stroke EMD's.

Well; considering that UBL is much closer to where freight operate, it probably did make sense to have a larger percentage of freight locomotives over passenger. Their links suggests the same too.

The other aspect is the requirement of Auto Emergency Brakes for Briganza and KR. Many of UBL and GY freight locomotives are already equipped with this.

Already? I doubt if these locomotives have run 100k km and they are already under repairs!

Do you know more about the problems?

Maybe because the 4 strokes are less noisy and less polluting. How different is a two stroke Diesel and a two stroke petrol in terms of working principle?

It is actually the other way round when it comes to diesel loco's.

For now, both Alco's (4storke) and EMD's(2stroke) are operational. ALco's belch out thick black smoke and in full song are noisy as well. On EMD's , at full blast, it sounds more like a race car with the more prominent sound being of the turbo. Visible smoke is very less compared to an ALCO. Smoke is during notching up. At full throttle, the ALco doesn't produce any visible smoke.

The link below is quite informative and specific to EMD diesel loco's.
