Re: Tata Motors launches 6 Heavy Trucks & FleetMan Telematics Services

Thanks for the report Parrys. The trucks looks impressive, the Prima 4938.S in particular. Good move to introduce the fleet management service, it is a definite growth area in future.

Couple of questions though.
What is the cubic capacity of the ISLe engine.
Are the cabs for these designed and built in-house by Tata?

As far as I know, the Tata Novus and the Tata Prima are the result of the Tata-Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company. I believe that the initial designs were from Daewoo, but yes, the design is an in-house development.

Yes. Styling was done by the Italian design house STILE BERTONE which was hired by Tata for the purpose.

Tata Novus was from the Daewoo portfolio but Prima has a different history.

Tata Prima is the outcome of Tata's "World Truck" project which was conceptualised before Tata acquired Daewoo CV Company. The World Truck project was launched keeping the international market in mind from the very begining. It was meant to bridge the technology/quality/tonnage gap between trucks made by Tata and those sold by international manufacturers. Tata did not have genuine HCVs in its portfolio at that time, its top product being 4021, with a GVW of 40 tonnes and an engine capacity of only 5.9 litres.

When Tata acquired Daewoo CV Co., it got a readymade portfolio of international-class HCVs from the Daewoo stable and so the World Truck project lost some of its urgency and momentum. Tata then launched the Novus model from Daewoo portfolio in India and middle east, although in India the trucks were launched with different engines sourced from Cummins. As Daewoo CV Co. got integrated into Tata operations, Tata decided to shift the project management work on World Truck from India to Korea.

The Primas look good inside the cabin. The lower headlamps at least reduce glare to oncoming as well as the rear view mirrors.
Looks like now they would really start mining the coal

I don't know what the Govt. regulation is, but i can guess the reasoning behind it:

EDIT: srishiva, good point about the rear view mirrors too! That would have been more apt in my little diagram above!

Someone @ TATA forgot to their job.

The torque figures are astonishing. Who is Cummins by the way?

Regarding placement of HL in the bumper, it is a good move as it reduces the glare for opposite goers.

Re: Tata Motors launches 6 Heavy Trucks & FleetMan Telematics Services

Tata Motors receives largest ever single order of 1314 trucks from India’s largest fleet owner. Tata Motors has received its largest ever single order for commercial vehicles from Siddhivinayak Logistics Ltd. (SVLL), to supply 1,314 trucks to be delivered during the financial year. The order coincided with the launch of an innovative scheme by SVLL, meant for the well-being of their drivers, called ‘Chalak se Malak’.

The order includes two recently launched products, the New Tata PRIMA 4923 – LX and the Tata LPT 3723, the first 5-axle rigid truck in the country.

Based in Surat, SVLL is India’s largest fleet owner, with a fleet size of over 4,000 commercial vehicles. The company operates across diverse segments, like steel, cement, tractors, chemicals, machinery, and is a pioneer in new segments like commercial vehicle chassis carriers.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. R. C. Baid, Founder and Chief Mentor, Siddhivinayak Logistics Ltd said, “We have been using Tata vehicles for decades and are pleased with the quality, engagement and after-sales services. We appreciate the commitment by Tata Motors in helping us become a specialist and India’s fastest growing surface transport company. Through this order we further strengthen our relationship with Tata Motors.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Vinod Sahay, Head – Sales & Marketing, Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors, said: “We are delighted that our association with M/s. SVLL continues unabated. We are honoured to receive this prestigious order and are committed to deliver these vehicles this fiscal year. We thank the company for their continued trust and patronage of our brand”.

The New Tata PRIMA 4923 – LX is from the new 230 HP range of PRIMA trucks, was launched to extend the PRIMA advantage to many more transporters who require a lower power-to-weight ratio. These vehicles are fitted with a Cummins ISBe electronic engine with common rail injection, for efficient fuel injection. This comes with India’s first indigenously developed 9-speed gearbox from Tata Motors with an overdrive function which provides superior fuel efficiency. These vehicles are also coupled with a 430 mm diameter organic clutch and 10-T rear axle to deliver a balanced and robust drive train. The Tata PRIMA LX cabin comes with an optional AC, 4 point suspension for reduced vibration and double sleeper bunks to provide maximum comfort to the driver.

The Tata LPT 3723 is the first 5-axle rigid truck in the country and will be the next big game changer in the Indian commercial vehicle industry. This truck can carry around 4.5 tonnes more than the existing 31 tonne MAV (Multi-axle vehicle) segment. As a result, it
is all set to radically change the economics of transportation in multiple segments by reducing the cost per Tonne-Km of transportation. It is powered by a Cummins 6BT 5.9L engine (155 kW power at 2500rpm), twin steerable front axles, a twin-drive axle and a tag-lift axle: the only truck to have such a technology, reducing tyre and fuel costs. The turning circle diameter of 21.9 metres makes it more maneuverable.

Why is the ABC arrangement is different here? Is this how it is for trucks? Any reason behind this?

Headlamps are located on the bumper to account for the additional tilt towards the rear that's going to be effected when the truck is loaded to its capacity (or even beyond, as is the general practice in India). In the normal position, the headlamps would definitely blind the oncoming traffic, and also, it could fail to illuminate the road immediately in front of the truck properly

Why do they need ABS for an offroad mining tipper? Any Idea?

Nice that they decided to give the 3723 in the cowl version instead of cab version

Re: Tata Motors launches 6 Heavy Trucks & FleetMan Telematics Services

Brilliant job by TML CV, the world truck concept had been lying low for the last few years, and all of the Tata workforce at Jamshedpur were totally engrossed into making the Prima production ready. Now that the Prima has really taken shape and has been launched into the market with wonderful features, M/s TML is back to the world truck once again. As per sources at Jamshedpur, TML is working on the Novus and I guess another model which generally is known as World Truck around Jamshedpur quarters at full throttle now. TML production had fallen badly at Jamshedpur since the last few months, for which many suppliers and vendors had suffered hugely, now I get to hear that things are working out pretty well. What I also heard is TML was clearing out huge piles of inventory blocked due to a bad recession linked with high interest rates etc. Now they have cleared up the huge inventory, and the production is slowly picking up at Jamshedpur. Sorry if I went off topic, I wanted to share a bit of information from the inside scene at Jamshedpur.

.
Cummins is the company who manufactures most of the Engines that Tata uses for their commercial vehicles. The company is a joint venture between M/s. Tata Motors Ltd and Cummins Engine company based in US. Tata Cummins Ltd is the official name of the company who makes the heart of these CVs. Tata Cummins has a manufacturing unit in Jamshedpur and one in Phaltan(or faltan) at the outskirts of Pune. Cummins also manufactures DG sets, both soundproof and normal ones.

Good going Tata , brilliant trucks .

However is it just me or do Tata trucks seem to be better equipped and finished than their cars ??

They provide a double din head-unit on their trucks but not the safari ?? Why ??

Lol! Exactly the same thought crossed my mind, especially looking at the Tata Prima LX 4023.S & 4923.S with sleeper bunks included!

On a serious note, would like to repeat @thecdkfactor's query - how would ABS be useful for these trucks?

Also nice to see commercial reviews being given importance. Anyone with more exposure/experience to these industries can provide more details on the internals of these vehicles; like how detailed our SUV (& car) reviews are. That would be quite insightful.
