Lower position is best & safest to both the truck & oncoming vehicles but as per what we say More/bigger is the better also comes into play here also.

Truckers like to add the OEM headlamps to previous blanked position also, which inturn increases the overall headlamps score for a truck to 4 plus fog lamps/additional lights extra, posing a hazard to oncoming vehicles.
I don't appreciate this move, since the time has arrived for TATA to change the basic front design to something more better & practical one.
Thanks for the info.

Do you happen to have more info about the 3723 though? That thing is simply amazing. I'd love anything -- pics to specs.

AL on other hand is so easy to steer and it turns without any hassle.
The average Indian trucker wants maximum Fuel Efficiency irrespective of the maneuverability or driver comfort. A lift axle lets him save on tyre costs and fuel efficiency when the truck returns empty which is simply the highest priority for the fleet owner these days. Bharatbenz has launched exactly the same config as the Tata 3118 (pusher lift axle and single steerable axle). Lets now see how well that new baby fares in the Indian Market. Actually i am surprised that AL has still not launched a lift axle truck in the market yet.

When power steering option was launched every one welcomed it and same happened with "over the bonnet " shorter gearshift lever, now both are seen as preferred default on both Tata & AL.

Higher fuel efficiency in lift axle trucks are not explicitly proven. Until otherwise there is no return load, this feature is not so useful. That's one reason why many have not gone with the life axle 31T. But even if some one develops (having both models), they will position it specifically for single load application only.

AFAIK 3118 pusher lift axle was the market leader in 31 T category till recently. Eicher and AL were with twin steerable and now Bharat Benz after noting the sales success of TML 3118 lift axle has lauched a similar config with a Hendrickson lift axle. I'm sure Daimler wouldn't want to emulate something which is inappropriate.

Another advantage of the lift axle is that in part load conditions/ voluminous cargo, the driver can lift up the axle and save on FE and tyre life rather than waiting for a 'return empty' situation.

I was mentioning only about influence of lift axle in FE in LPT 3118.The sales reported, as you know is uniform for across any trucks between TM – AL – EM. As a matter of fact LPT 3118’s biggest worry is tyre wear in the lift axle. That should be a problem only with TM and I guess Bharat Benz might have overcome this.
