PICS: Imported Commercial Vehicles in India

Imported tourist mini-buses are quite a common sight in places where well-to-do tourists flock for sight seeing. The tour operators are allowed to import these with concessional custom duties, provided they show the requisite foreign exchange earnings.
These were sighted on Dr Rajendra Prasad Marg, near Janpath, New Delhi two days back:

re: PICS: Imported Commercial Vehicles in India

Delhi has plenty of these imported people-carriers. Apart from the Toyota Hiace Commuter & Coaster and the VW Caravelle that you've posted, I've regularly noticed a few Mercedes Viano, a VW Crafter, A Toyota Alphard and (a surprise, this one - had to go up to the vehicle and check the badge) a Fiat Ducato. All of them are parked outside a 5-star hotel not too far from my place, and (I think) are used for package tour trips on the Golden Triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur) for guests of the hotel.

Next time I come across these, I'll try to get some photos.

Don't know how common these are in other Indian cities though.

re: PICS: Imported Commercial Vehicles in India

Last winter in Udaipur I had spotted, but failed to click, two Toyota Hiace-s, and a Volkswagen Caravelle. All had DL regs, very similar to the ones you posted. I heard that they were available for tourists on tour packages from foreign operators.
Also, in Kolkata I remember spotting some Volvo FH series tractor trucks hauling very large pipes/tubes a long time back. This was before Volvo had officially started selling the FH, so I guess they were also imported.

Sometime back while travelling on an ORR here, spotted a Trailer carrying Mack Mr series truck with a Putzmeister pumper, Couldn't click as it was pretty dark. The machine was similar to the one in the pic.

Are you sure it was a Mack Mr ? Because there are plenty of companies in INdia offering the same solutions like Schwing Stetter, except the application is built on a Volvo. I believe Sany also has similar solutions built on AMWs and ALLs.

Saw this mammoth crane in Delhi today. Since I have zilch clue about commercial vehicles, experts here can identify it. The tyre on this thing is one of the largest I have seen with my own eyes.

Re: PICS: Imported Commercial Vehicles in India

VW transporter is very common with tour operators in Delhi. It is hired to foreigners.

Peterbilt and Kenworth are being used by ONGC for many years now. A whole thread is dedicated to it by yours truly.

Also there is a foreign registered Mercedes bus, which remains in India most time of the year. I have posted a image long ago.

Nice find Rush! I believe these are mostly used to transport the consulate / diplomat staff. Have seen many of these plying in the city (mostly with SE Asian countries).
