Sutlej to make buses for Benz

http://www.financialexpress.com/late...tent_id=137556

Jallandhar based Sutlej motors will build luxury buses for Diamler.
Those from north India will recall that before Volvo came, Sutlej built the most modern and good looking bus bodies using high quality materials. I have seen a couple of buses in South too. This speaks volumes about growing importance of Indian accessory/Parts builders and vendors.

Yeah, it seems this feasibility study was done a few months back and sutlej, if chosen, would be building the bus bodies in a manner similar to Azad building the volvo bus bodies.

Any idea if Sutlej was chosen for the technology and safety standing (whatever it presently has)

or

the need for cheap labour and the trend of manufacuring industry shifting eastwards

caused this?

AFAIK Sutlej is one of the best coach builders in India... I remember seeing one of their custom buses.... man it rivaled any Volvo from inside, and this was about 10 years back!

Thats fantastic news.
But where are the chassis going to come from? Germany?

Currently Volvo puts their chassis together at their Bangalore plant and sends them to JAICO for body building.

They have to compete directly with Volvo on price.

AFAIK,Volvo sends the chassis to azad for body building. In the meanwhile, Karnataka state transport receives 1st Sutlej built Mercedes bus at a cost of 65L. the Volvos retail at 75 L. The war has begun!! and its the consumer that gets the benefit.

thats great news. There's a hell lot of body builders out there in north and every other part of india.
As a kid, i used to see buses built from these body builders that had Volvo and Mercedez written over them.
It seems times have come full circle in about 15 years.
Its akin to thinking that and indian company who used to make pirated windows will now write Windows software for Microsoft.
Kudos to our very own home-grown engineering talent to have matched the very best and made them realize our cost advantage.

Just read in the papers today that our good old KSRTC has already purchased and is going to ply these Mercedes buses on the Bangalore - Mysore route. The pics of the bus had the Sutlej logo in the front with a Mercedes slogan written on the sides

Sutlej are excellent coach builders, now diversifying into other areas too.
They are into this business since long & their erstwhile owners were very well known to us.

Guys,

Mercedes-Benz buses are already cruising on Maharashtra's highways at mind-boggling speeds. Apart from the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star on the front, it doesn't look much different from the other modern buses plying on the highways. I am yet to travel in one but fellow team-bhpian dhrishikesh took a 200+ km ride and was quite impressed.

'Commercial Vehicle Thread' is often updated with such news.

When it was launched the Merc was supposed to be the more expensive one.
