Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

Thanks to Satish Bakde for sharing the following note:

Quote:
India has a very strong base of local politics that disrupts normal lives for grabbing attention. Just recall how many times road transport buses get damaged throughout the year in so many cities. Then there are rail roko activities. We also witnessed the Pune-Bangalore bypass being blocked in the name of farmers. Aircrafts are discounted being too high, but anything that runs near land can easily get victimised by such people, especially outside the cities.

Hyperloop transportation has an air leak-proof tight pipeline (or loop) as the core of its technology. They will no doubt make the loop material strong enough to tackle high rains, winds, temperature, sun and significant units of earthquake too. But I don't believe the system can survive a large & intentional human attack. The system will detect foul play and can at max allow passengers to disembark midway. But it means that the system is damaged and would incur a significantly high cost of repair due to work precision. The project will have this risk throughout its existence and protecting the entire loop 24 x 7 does not look practical or financially viable.

Only possible option is to raise the height of their pillars to more than 40 feet over the ground everywhere with no option for anyone to climb, other than equipped Hyperloop technicians. Hope they do not discover this threat once they erect everything.

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

I'm intrigued by the question of how Hyperloop will tackle the ghat sections between Pune and Mumbai.

Most of what we've heard of Hyperloop is on flat land or underground where they can tunnel in a straight line.

Virgin Unveils 760 MPH Hyperloop One Pod in Dubai.

Quote:
An hour and a half trip by car between Dubai and Abu Dhabi could be cut to under 12 minutes shortly, thanks to the implementation of Virgin’s Hyperloop One transport system in the Arab country.
Quote:
A week ago, Richard Branson, who owns Hyperloop One, announced the signing of a Framework Agreement with the Indian state of Maharashtra for the construction of a hyperloop route that would link central Pune and Mumbai.
Quote:
In essence, hyperloop is transport means that operates in a vacuum, using capsules to shoot passengers and cargo through enclosed tubes. Acceleration is achieved by electric propulsion, while the capsule floats above the tracks using magnetic levitation.

In theory, the Hyperloop system would help achieve speeds up to three times higher than the current high-speed rail trains

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

To all the naysayers, I would like to draw an analogy of Concorde. Civilian humans could also travel at Supersonic speeds with their technology.
I completely agree that the technology is still in development phase. However, I believe this to be a better alternative than the Japanese bullet train due to only 1 thing; the network for both of them needs to be built from scratch. If we limit our vision to just 340kmph, it will still not be enough for the future. Why not aim for the stars and reach the moon instead?
On a lighter note, if and when this gets completed, real estate market in Pune will surely be booming. Investment in real estate anyone?

Two views :::
1. This thing is so damn scary. Imagine getting stuck in a closed canister inside a closed tube and not knowing when or how help would arrive. I know this is a hypothetical situation but scary nevertheless.
2.Moreover how do they plan to conquer the western ghats while travelling from Mumbai to Pune ? Tunnelling the entire that would be super expensive.

Regards

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

If this becomes operational and is accessible to the aam admi, just watch how it affects real estate prices in Mumbai. People won't be forced to stay in Mumbai any longer. But i know next to nothing about the economics and ticket prices to be expected in such projects.

By the way, self-driving cars are similarly expected to alter real estate prices everywhere for a similar reason.

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

Maharashtra government has approved the Virgin Hyperloop One-DP World consortium as the "Original Project Proponent" (OPP) for the Pune-Mumbai hyperloop project
According to Virgin Hyperloop One, the state government -- one of the first proponents of hyperloop technology in the world -- has deemed hyperloop a public infrastructure project, setting it up to be the first hyperloop project in the world

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

As the political situation changed in Maharashtra, Virgin's Branson met officials to clear "misunderstandings" and gauge the new administration's interest in the USD 10 billion project, which promises to cut the travel time between Mumbai and Pune to less than half and hour.

Will study and decide, Minister tells Branson on Hyperloop project.
