Volvo & Eicher showcased their lineup of Indian commercial vehicles at the Auto Expo 2023. Unlike previous expos, there was a renewed focus on sustainable mobility with LNG and electric powered vehicles taking precedence.

Here's a look at their stall:

The Volvo 9600 has been the bread & butter model for Volvo in India. It is powered by an 8L diesel engine producing 344hp and 1350nm torque. Power is sent to the wheels through Volvo's I-Shift automated manual transmission. The 9600 is available in a number of seating and sleeper configurations.

Features such as hill-start assist and electronic braking are offered, while in-cabin features aboard the display vehicle here had individual entertainment screens for each seat, seatbelts, electronically controlled recline function and even an integrated lavatory.

As mentioned before, Volvo Eicher are betting big on cutting down emissions and switching to cleaner forms of energy. One of the most prominent steps in a bid to do so is the introduction of the FM 420 4X2 LNG tractor.

LNG stands for liquified natural gas, essentially methane. It is important to note that LNG and LPG are not the same. LPG is a mixture of butane and propane, while LNG is chiefly composed of methane.

CO2 emissions savings as a result of switching to LNG are in the region of 20% according to Volvo. This is again keeping aside the cost advantage of LNG over diesel.

What is technically interesting in the Pro 8055 truck is the use of bi-fuel technology in the form of CNG + LNG, hence the term Hybrid (as opposed to what is commonly understood to be ICE + electric drives when we use that term). The LNG tank here is a specialized cryogenic tank, with the temperature maintained at approximately -160°C.

That’s quite interesting. It has been a long journey for Volvo from the launch of the B7R which changes the face of intercity bus travel. Good to see a shift towards cleaner energy.
