Get hold of an edge of the sunfilm and remove it slowly, parallel to the glass. If you pull it away from the glass in a perpendicular direction, the defogger lines may come out along with the film. But when you pull it in such a way that you are sliding over the glass, there wont be any damage. Dont try to scrape any residue but use a solvent or cleaning agent to finish the job.

I had been pushing removnig the sun films till now.

I was probably not stopped by the cops until now as my sunfilm has 65% visibility; it is not dark.

But, after the Delhi incident, cops in Bangalore have become very strict about sun-films, I was stopped twice. The first cop let me go, when I said my film's visibility was in permitted limit. The second time I was stopped, I was told there is no limit, all sun-films have to be removed, and I was fined Rs.100.

So, for couple of days I drove around with all 4 windows rolled down (as I did not find time to remove the sun-films). Last weekend, I found some time; re-read the posts in this thread and decided to remove it myself.

It was easier than I expected it to be. The steps I followed:
1. Parked the car in direct sunlight for about 1 hr.
2. When the car was warm enough, parked it in shade.
3. Took a sharp object and picked the edge of the sunfilm (being careful not to scartch the glass)
4. Very slowly pulled the sun-film from the edge while another person was rubbing the (now clear) glass area with wet newspaper to remove any glue residue.
5. Repeated the procedure on all 4 windows.

Notes:
1. Ripping off the sun-film works, but leaves a lot of glue on the window.
2. I was not sure how easy/tough removing the glue would be as my sun-film was installed approx. 4 years ago. I guess it depends on the quality of sun-film too, this was 3M sun-film.
3. Did not use any glass cleaner, just water and news paper. I guess news paper works better than cloth/cotton waste.
4. Requires some patience
5. I did not remove the sun-film from the rear quarter glass and the hatch.
6. I could feel siginificant difference in temperature while driving without sun-films this morning :(

Query: I am thinking of buying the stick-on sun-blockers to stick on the windows. Is this allowed or not?

I will also remove sunfilms from my cars tomorrow.


Any sunfilms/curtains are not allowed but we can use these sun-blockers. Even if they are not allowed then still one can remove them easily and use back again. They are very useful in preventing clear view of interiors/ICE when your car is parked.

Are you sure about the curtains. I don't remember reading anywhere about any restrictions on curtains.

Removed sun films from my i10 today. Took around 2 hours for the complete work. Removing the sunfilm was easy but getting rid off the residue glue was a tough task. I haven't removed rear hatch sun film as I was running out of time and don't think it will be of any trouble, will remove whenever I find time along with WagonR's sun films.

It was mentioned in the notice by Delhi police in newspapers few days back.

I need that due to the scorching heat in Kerala during summer seasons.AC doesn’t seems to be effective for back seat passenger. I can wow it is not traceable on naked eye by any policeman.

If anybody wants to install the film please PM me .I can share the contact details. Unfortunately this guy is placed at Trivandrum, Kerala and you can check with any local Garware guys available in your place for this film if you are looking for only heat rejection/cooling.

Again- it is completely “transparent”.

I wonder how the Audi's, BMW's and Mercs pass the ARAI testing if shade pads are also prohibited!

Fortunately, in Mumbai, no one has challaned me for using shade pads, or with the Rear and Rear windows curtained on my Audi.

A face steamer for 3-5 mins and the whole thing will comes off without any effort. Was done with all glasses on my manza within 30 mins :)

I tried to remove the sunfilm on sunday. I started with the left rear seat window. I tried using stationary blade and Mr muscle, but i was not able to peel it of. I was only able to do it in bits. After trying for one hour I quit thinking it is not my cup of tea.

Then i took it to the professionals. They were able to peel of all windows easily except the left rear window. They too had problems with this one.

Thats when I realised I chose my the wrong window the start with :)

They charged me Rs 250/-

I used two cans of a deodorant which was gifted to me(complementary, hated the scent) to get the glue off the glass. I used this as I did not want to scrape the glue using a blade or sharp object. It caused cobwebs on a neighbours car when he got it done by a guy from outside. Just spray onto the glass, leave it for some time and scrub it off using cotton waste. The glue came off easily and after that, a final cleanup with colin did the job perfectly. No smell also :D At least that complementary deo helped me avoid scratches on the glass.

Finally removed sun films from my Honda City and now all my rides are sun films free - No worry of cops bothering me now.

As I had experience of removing sun films before from my wagonr/i10, today I just took 10 minutes in removing all sun films and the best part was that no residue was left on the glass.

I didn’t expect removing sunfilms will be that easy in Chennai. Got the filming done by 3M on Nov’11, that costed me around 6000rs for all 4sides and rear for my Liva. Paid 100 towards the first warning last Sunday in GNChetty road. Then decided to remove the films, as I have seen many cars are being checked on the same day. I have gone through this thread for checking possible ways of removing the sunfilms.
This morning I kept the car for 1hr. With already scorching Chennai weather, the car got enough temperature. Carried a new razor blade, Kerosene, waste soft cloth. Did a small cut along the top of the glass. Slowly with my wife’s help, pulled the film downwards. Before reaching the bottom of the glass, I lifted the glass fully and then pulled the film from the bottom. I was successfully able to pull film as a single piece. Repeated the procedure for all sides. Total time taken 30mins. To my surprise I can hardly see any glue residues after removing. But still I have used the soft cloth slightly dipped in Kerosene to clean from inside. Finally felt that it’s a simple DIY job and tough to forget the 6000 bucks.

Ritesh, unfortunately I dont have that excerpt but the ban is on Films. More to say, if we go by the legal definition, nothing to be pasted on the glass. So, in a way, the law is permitting the use of Curtains as few of people do, can use the Shade pads, as long as it is not pasted.

And am sure, someday, someone will find a way out of this legality too. In the interim, I will try to find the information from the source and will post it here. Keep watching

Was driving my Alto last week and was stopped at Bhandup-LBS road in Mumbai. Licence was taken and got a challan.

Went to the RTO Chowki yesterday in my other car for paying the fine. The Policeman at chowki informed me that I need to get the car and show that all films have been removed. Went back.

Today morning, just ripped out all the sunfilm. (The glue remains, that's a weekend project. ) Went back to the RTO Chowki, showed the car, paid 100Rs fine and got the license back.
