Regarding positioning, just think about it - some jugaad might crop up.

Had plans for using my regular phone as a GPS. Can't stick things to it unfortunately. Also, there's no horizontal slot. So back to those suction cups I guess.

Thanks, I know the metal piece looks a bit raw, as the paint I had applied started peeling off. I thought it best to sand it down to a bare metal finish which looks much better now.

That us a very neat & effective DIY there. Better that the exorbitantly priced smart phone holders that we get at the stores. Exactly the kind of work that keeps me excited in the DIY section.

Alternatively, you could also try a plus(+) shaped metal piece right at the center of the plastic case. It would allow you to use the phone both horizontally and vertically, as needed. Also having the metal at the center would give it better weight balance over poor roads.
