Re: DIY: Fixing & painting a deep scratch

For rough scrapes like that start with 320 then move up to 400. After that use Com Fill to smooth out any imperfections. After it dries sand with 600 then 800 grit until the surface is uniform. Ideally it's better to use a primer but since it's a small section you could skip it.
Then you can do 2 coats of colour on the target area and then a 3rd coat that feathers into the surrounding area to blend the paint. Let it dry for a day then sand lightly with 1200 grit. Cover with 2-3 layers of clearcoat over a larger area with the final coat being a "wet" coat ideally but that is tricky to achieve without getting drips.
Let it dry for a day then wet sand with 1500 and 2000 grit then polish it. I would not wax it for a month until the paint fully cured.

PS : Guys I'm thinking of getting an airbrush kit for small touchups. Com paint is a hit or miss when it comes to matching paint but it's easily available from a paint shop in 50-100ml quantities for reasonable prices. Any tips or advice ?

Re: DIY: Fixing & painting a deep scratch

Recently contacted Com-paint for just the pain spray instead of entire kit. It seems we can get it over phone call only and not through the website. Better to get the colour from Com-paint as they manage to match the colour as per car colour.

And exactly the doubt I had about Solvent spray. In the end it worked out just fine. I pretty much used it like clear coat and in fact I ran out of the spray. Need to see how it'll hold up in long term. Worst case will order a good quality clear coat and spray over it. Only issue with Clear Coat would be that we might have to cover the entire panel with the spray. Merging the paint on partially painted panel might be difficult. Or at least I've not come across any such video.

This is clear coat. What you are looking for is Primer - step before the base coat of paint. I would suggest you stick to automotive primers/paints and clear coats. Also I would suggest watching loads of videos on Youtube. If you need examples from In India there is this channel called Brotomotive. though they are a professional detailer/painter - their explanation lays out clear workflow.
I am looking at Rust Oleum for primer and clear coat. Even though it costs more it’s quality is supposed to be very good.

Is the clear coat Acrylic Paint? And does it have to be automotive paint or any weather and scratch resistant coat is fine? Then I would go for Rust-Oleum 249117 Spray Paint, Clear Glossy Finish available on Amazon

Oh! Just ordered the Com Paint kit 2 days back. Otherwise would have taken only paint and used 3M Bondo for filling. I already have 3M sandpaper and applicators. Also planing to use Rust Oleum rust protective primer and some 2K clear coat ( haven’t decided yet) and TurtlenWax polish.

Automotive 2K Clear Coat is preferred. Unlike other painted surfaces, car's exterior is exposed to lot of abuse and harsh weather/sun. Usually it is mentioned in the description if it is suitable for automotive application.

Re: DIY: Fixing & painting a deep scratch

Hello bhpians, I unfortunately scratched my new Virtus GT today. The scratch is on front right bumper. It appears to be deep. I spoke to VW service and they promptly told me to replace the bumper.

I feel this can be a paint job. I’m thinking of doing a DIY. What do you people suggest?

Absolutely no need to replace the bumper. If you get a Com Paint kit with the matching colour then a DIY is definitely possible.
You will need to first clean up the gouge, then use a filler to sand it before painting. Also pick up a can of clearcoat which isn't included in the kit to seal in your hard work.

Thank you! Have ordered the com-paint. Should I use the com-merge which seems to be the clear coat? Or should I order a different clear coat?

A different clear coat is needed. Com Merge is just a thinner based blending spray which you use after applying the colour.

Clean then Fill then Sand then Colour then Merge then Clear then Merge at the edges then Polish after a couple of days when it has hardened fully.

Re: DIY: Fixing & painting a deep scratch

Hello fellas,
I want to repair some deep battle scars on my Deep forest coloured ScorpioN from my trip to Ladakh. These battle scars are deep scratches on the rear fender on the metal sheet and some on the plastic parts like ORVM and front bumper. I don't want to repaint the panels as suggested by the SA at MM SC.
I have sourced about 100ml factory paint from the MM service center. Now I wonder how to go about the DIY, as I don't have a spray gun and I am not very confident about the Com-paint product outcomes because it is a metallic paint shade and the location of the deep scratches.
Any suggestions or leads for a good paint touch-up shop in Faridabad or Delhi NCR.
Thanks in advance.
